You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

At my school we wear masks ALL the time. As an English teacher trying to read texts through a mask is awful. I find I’m really breathless. In one of my classes I have a deaf student so I wear a mask with a clear mouthpiece and they are the worst - really heavy and I often feel faint.

MrsHamlet · 07/05/2021 07:12

Ah mother the solution is easy. My colleagues are simply showing films so they don't have to talk

motherrunner · 07/05/2021 07:15

Films???

I am sick of this half term. Yr 11 and 13 are bored with the constant assessing. I’m bored with the starting the lessons the same way. They ask me why school down the road has study leave, I say I don’t know, let’s work. Ground hog day x a million.

MrsHamlet · 07/05/2021 07:21

Yep. Every book has a film you can show instead of doing the work.
My classes hate me because I never let them watch the film. It does mean they don't write about the shootout in the petrol station though, so I'm fine with that.

noblegiraffe · 07/05/2021 07:23

But the shootout in the petrol station is the best bet! Shakespeare was a genius.

To be fair when I have my whack a mole class for 3 hours a bit of a documentary does slide in there. 3 hours in a small room with no windows makes me a Bob.

Have never thought to do a Kahoot full class imagine not that effective for most if the class.

MrsHamlet · 07/05/2021 07:23

Before his time, in fact!

MsAwesomeDragon · 07/05/2021 07:28

I can't even imagine how I would cope with my whack a mole class for 3 hours!!!! I'm tearing my hair out after about 40 minutes! I've never done kahoot, but I do play a fair bit of bingo with them, and sometimes promise them fizzbuzz if they can get lots of work done. They love a bit of fizzbuzz Hmm

MrsHamlet · 07/05/2021 07:34

Please MrsAD - what is fizzbuzz?

MsAwesomeDragon · 07/05/2021 07:42

It's a very easy maths game. We stand in a circle and take turns counting round. If the number you are supposed to say at your turn is in the 3 times table you say fizz. If it's in the 5 times table you say buzz. If it's in both you say fizzbuzz. Once they've got the hang of it, we start getting people out if they go wrong, or I offer a small reward if we can get to 30 without any mistakes. It's very, very basic maths but for some reason they love it and will work hard (er) in order to play it Confused

noblegiraffe · 07/05/2021 07:46

Tbf to Baz, I never really appreciated the whole bite your thumb scene till the shootout in the petrol station.

When I was at school we watched the version where a 15 year old shows her boobs just because the film director was a perv. Hmm

MrsHerculePoirot · 07/05/2021 09:12

@WhenSheWasBad I find making sure the start of the work is super easy so they can all get started without needing help helps settle and then I can start to move and help individuals.

TheHoneyBadger · 07/05/2021 10:06

In a care home that has to be pretty promising That's how I read that article too Noble - maybe I have just run out of energy for panicking but I took that as very positive given how vulnerable that population are.

Piggywaspushed · 07/05/2021 15:21

Oh fuckity fuck. Letter form DS's school. Indian variant found. All close contacts of any cases have to go and get PCR tests.

High transmission in schools in area...

Piggywaspushed · 07/05/2021 15:28

I like Baz too (alhtough also like the pervy Zeffirelli mainly because Tybalt is brilliant and he doesn't mess with the end- and actually the kids like it). I like Baz even more now the male member of the dept said on twitter that it was crap.

Fuckadoodledo. Jeez. Hope all is contained as much as it can be.
LolaSmiles · 07/05/2021 16:49

Yikes Piggy. That's not what you want to hear. I hope DS is OK.

MrsHamlet · 07/05/2021 17:00

Bugger, Piggy
I'm doing Hamlet interpretations at the moment. All the begging in the world does not mean they can watch the lion king until after their exams

MsAwesomeDragon · 07/05/2021 17:03

Oh no piggy. I hope your DS manages to avoid it. It must be really stressful for you all. Flowers

Piggywaspushed · 07/05/2021 17:20

DS has avoided it thus far...sword of Damocles...

Saucery · 07/05/2021 17:28

Local college closed completely due to outbreak of Indian variant. Won’t be long before schools follow, I wouldn’t have thought
Neverbloodyending, innit?

I was tempted to stop off and buy some gin on the way home but was wearing my school logoed hoodie (and only a tatty vest top underneath so couldn’t take it off). Classic FM then taunted me with adverts for Whitley Neill Sad

MrsHamlet · 07/05/2021 17:45

You need to acquire the Whitley Neil mango and lime. For medicinal purposes...

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 07/05/2021 17:55

Malfy grapefruit gin is the best non just gin I've had in a while.

piggy That's rubbish for you and ds. Cases here are so low, 9 per 100k and falling.

JanFebAnyMonth · 07/05/2021 18:00

Where do you start with a (non teaching) colleague who tells you that her phone counts her steps around school whilst in her locker (no smart watch)??
Oh no piggy!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 07/05/2021 18:02

Oh no, Piggy. Hope you manage to avoid it.
