I thought I was being tinfoil hat before ... seems not:

I understand the new British Covid-19 strain is more transmissible between children than the older strain. So there is a big question around whether schools should re-open in January?

Peston on Twitter.

People rightly asking why he didn't ask this at briefing.

Piggyinblankets · 19/12/2020 20:09

Kent Online reporting children's' wards are full of covid patients . Many teenagers in hospital.

This , of course, matches the terrible attendance in Kent recently.

KnowingMeKnowingYule · 19/12/2020 20:10

Do you have a link piggy please?

DecemberStar · 19/12/2020 20:11

So do we think the testing thing was all because they knew this was coming? Because actually there is no way schools are going to be able to be anything like open next term, without loads of testing?

Well OK, but then why get teachers to do the bally testing???

bornatXmastobequiet · 19/12/2020 20:15

Weren’t children protected because they have fewer ACE receptors, and that’s a way in for the virus? Maybe the new variant has a new way in.

Piggyinblankets · 19/12/2020 20:15

It's in this Twitter thread

DollyMixtureLulus · 19/12/2020 20:17

do you think staff will be working from home from 6th then? They don't need everyone in for key workers dc. We certainly need the time to set up online stuff!

I don't know @ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas . We don't need everyone for key workers, but 90% of our vulnerable children need 1-1 support and are working very far below the main class. It'd be impossible to teach them and teach the class online at the same time.

KnowingMeKnowingYule · 19/12/2020 20:18

Thanks Piggy

bornatXmastobequiet · 19/12/2020 20:18

The testing thing was because they knew what was happening already, not because they knew what was to come.

They were going to get teachers to do the testing because children would be in school, teachers would be in school and it seemed the obvious thing to do - that is, to anyone unaccustomed to thinking something through before getting someone else to do it.

DreamingofBrie · 19/12/2020 20:18

Solidarity to everyone Flowers I'm sorry to those of you who have to change plans now.

We went for covid tests at a pop up centre today, all v well organised and results within 20 min. I know lateral flow is not that reliable but was relieved they were all negative. Went to say hi to my parents on the way home, first time I've seen them since the beginning of September, I felt really emotional afterwards, but they are in good health and good spirits.

Probably won't see them for a while as they have decided they would feel safer not coming over on Christmas Day, but I hope I can do another doorstep visit during the holidays.

PumpkinPie2016 · 19/12/2020 20:19

Good grief, tier 4 (not where I am) and changes to Christmas mixing all in one dayXmas Confused

Many will stick to the rules, however difficult, but I suspect many won't.

All along, we were only having MiL on Christmas day (she has alzheimer's and is bubbled with us anyway due to needing significant support) so not much has changed for us. I was hoping to have my parents on the 27th but that can't happen now Xmas Sad

Started a big house tidy/clean today - need to finish off tomorrow. Also need to go to the garden centre for one last present.

Trying to think of nice things to do with DS(7) over the holidays to make it as nice as possible.

He wants to watch home alone 1&2 so will make a home cinema at some point.

We have some minecraft lego to build from his birthday plus we have bought him some more for Christmas so we will do that.

Board games - we have some and have bought monopoly for Christmas.

Local walks if it's nice enough. We are lucky to have walks literally out of the front door.

Not sure what else. To be honest, I think he will just be happy to have time with us at home.

GleamingBaubles · 19/12/2020 20:19

Can I copy/paste this from the Republic?

This variant being more transmissable in children would make absolute sense.
It is like we create antibiotic resistance.
If you reduce infection routes in every place other than schools - then mutations that cause the virus to spread more in children will quickly become the dominant mutation.

Does anyone concur?

SaltyAF · 19/12/2020 20:19

The logical extension to that being this new strain could have been avoided with mitigations in schools this term.
GleamingBaubles · 19/12/2020 20:23

Exactly....

TheHoneyBadger · 19/12/2020 20:25

Glad it's not just me who thought it strange Smile announced she was going to have a bath and a shit on Christmas day like she only does it once a year Grin

I let it pass though because I assumed only I was that childish.

Maybe the shoving in some faux plans for doing something about infections in school is there way of preventing us all from saying, 'and you've done nothing whilst we told you this was happening', when the news actually breaks properly. They can bleat on about this mass testing they had planned already but things move rapidly ya da ya da.

A SHIT DETECTIVE NOVEL YOU GUYS!!! 😂😂😂

Also. I need a graph that proves secondary kids are highest infection rate - and ideally that this is leading to rise in over 60s. There was one in my area but I can’t find it. I’m having a pointless argument on Twitter....

DecemberStar · 19/12/2020 20:29

@bornatXmastobequiet have you NCed, or are you a new poster here? Very confused!

Yes Salty, I concur.

Does Peston name his source?

KnowingMeKnowingYule · 19/12/2020 20:29

You guys are making me smile 😊 thanks all x

I think the mass testing went:

We need to do something about London schools (oh and maybe Hastings)
Let's mass test them
It's the end of term, we don't have enough time
Ok we'll mass test them in January instead
Shouldn't we mass test all the kids after Christmas?
Ok
Er, we haven't got enough mobile testing units
Schools can do the tests themselves
Ok, they'll need a lab and non-porous flooring and some test tubes
Fine, they probably already have that
And some people to do the tests
We'll get the parents in
That's great. Let's announce it.

.....well that went well.

SmileEachDay · 19/12/2020 20:32

noel I NEED A GRAPH

noelgiraffe · 19/12/2020 20:33

Shits aren't just for Christmas, Smile. You don't have to save everything for special occasions.
