So continuing on from our boycott/flowers we need to continue to defend our profession. This is teacher/school staff chat - if you do not fall into that category please start you own thread elsewhere.

Pfrench - I hear you, my school is the same. I have an inveterate spitter in my class who also bites and bolts off regularly even though he is in year 6. He also likes chewing up wads of paper and making spit sculptures out of them. I will absolutely refuse to have him in the class. Plus we have several ebd boys who found it hilarious to cough at people before the lockdown. If children can't be trusted to just do as they are told then they should not be allowed in but we all know that won't happen. It's precisely the ebd ones who will be chucked back in first. There's a reason the school also knows them as "every bloody day". They are NEVER off because home can't cope with them.

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/03/uk-lockdown-must-not-be-lifted-until-covid-19-transmission-is-understood-say-scientists

Interesting article to counteract the June 1st stories, especially if the government are really "following the science".

Asuitablecat · 03/05/2020 13:56

phlebas (and are you referencing Banks or Eliot or both btw?) Yes, the naughtiest kids and their full attendance. Immune systems worthy of scientific marvel!

phlebasconsidered · 03/05/2020 14:02

Banks - I miss him!
They should seriously look at how those kids are SO healthy!

NeurotrashWarrior · 03/05/2020 14:07

Lovely phleb!Envy< not envy.

Sen schools will find it very challenging.

No SD is possible and would be upsetting for them anyway.

Also, many of our pupils rely on familiar faces and routines. Their behaviour can become very unsettled with staff they don't know. Sometimes we prefer no supply to an unfamiliar supply TA or teacher. Some classes take till after Xmas to settle (Xmas tends to whip everyone up again.)

If y6 returned plus key workers I suppose at least most staff would know them well, but I feel it would be better for the children with more challenging needs to be invited back first. They're the children who often do need the structure of school. I actually think that's starting to happen in our own setting.

At the same time, as a pp said, many children do better mh wise without being at school.

Settings like SEN are v unique though, even between sen schools. Many pupils have underlying health issues too.

I'd been reading Banks since I was 18. Had a little cry when he died and I'm not one for crying over people i don't know. But my alternative universe died with him and no one else has managed to create one quite like it.

phlebasconsidered · 03/05/2020 14:14

I agree- nobody has ever managed to pull off such a complete sci-fi universe since. I used to anticipate his books with such joy. I do re-read them regularly though. I'm on Feersum Enjinn at the moment. I read tons of sci-fi, always have 3 or 4 books on the go but he's not been topped yet.

Asuitablecat · 03/05/2020 14:25

I 're read too! My geekiest Friday night ever took place last year, when an.old.friend phoned me to discuss the timeline of the Minds in ExcessionGrin He had it all charted.

phlebasconsidered · 03/05/2020 14:31

Wow! I wish they'd bring out a complete guide and atlas, like they have for Pratchett. I'd love to see the races and cultures artistically realised. And a complete timeline.

Piggywaspushed · 03/05/2020 15:55

Ah Iain Banks. I hate sci fi but love The Wasp Factory and went to school on The Crow Road!

It's like a fake holiday here today. Just had an interminable game of War with DS2 which we usually play on the plane, and now he is playing petanque with DH !

RigaBalsam · 03/05/2020 16:16

MP saying OFsted inspectors and graduates should volunteer for disadvantaged catch up on the summer.,

Go on then Amanda! Grin

RigaBalsam · 03/05/2020 16:16

In the summer.

SallyLovesCheese · 03/05/2020 16:39

My DH loves Iain M Banks! He, too, was gutted when he died - he thinks the whole idea of the Culture is just so imaginative.

I've just made the connection between his book and you're username, Phlebas! Blush

RaraRachael · 03/05/2020 16:40

RigaBalsam I saw him on the lunchtime news with his nonsense - retired teachers are supposed to come flocking out of the woodwork for this mad scheme too. {grin]

cheesecurdsandgravy · 03/05/2020 16:41

Gove thanking teachers. Bloody hell. Wonder he didn’t choke on his words Grin

Piggywaspushed · 03/05/2020 16:42

Maybe that's why it started late : they had to inject him with some sort of serum first.

pfrench · 03/05/2020 16:50

Gove can kiss my arse.

Appuskidu · 03/05/2020 16:52

What’s he saying-I can’t bear to watch Blush.

bettybattenburg · 03/05/2020 16:54

Gove thanking teachers. Bloody hell. Wonder he didn’t choke on his words

@cheesecurdsandgravy You really think we're going to believe THAT ? Grin

Asuitablecat · 03/05/2020 16:56

It'll be a shit sandwich:
Thank you
Back to school for the economy, sorry, children's futures
You're all excellent adequate.

Piggywaspushed · 03/05/2020 16:58

They seriously need to drop this word safe. People are going to feel so let down when it proves only to be 'just about safe enough'.

bettybattenburg · 03/05/2020 16:58

Back to school for the economy, sorry, children's futures

So he's said we're going back then? When? I know I should listen to the briefings but I can't bear to listen.

Asuitablecat · 03/05/2020 17:02

betty I'm guessing too. Based on the media frenzy. I'm watching Dd play fortnite, keeping an.eye on.the weather, and listening to r6. No.idea what's going on in.the real world.

bettybattenburg · 03/05/2020 17:04

YY to Fortnite and the weather here. I'm doing a jigsaw and ignoring the news - I catch up on the news by reading it online. We are isolating as much as possible, apart from work I am not going anywhere except contactless click and collect from the farm shop down the road.

Piggywaspushed · 03/05/2020 17:04

I am very interested in how this tracing app works in schools (and indeed anywhere with lots of people under one roof). Surely, everyone's phones would constantly alert them!
