My understanding is that the police traced the van from the reg and the identity of the occupants. Assume then that police told H&M these details to de-escalate their concern that it might be more sinister / terror related.

Why did H&M issue a statement to media - to tell off / scare off paparazzi? Could they not have done this directly with news agencies - why does it have to go via the general public? What did they want to achieve?
