Do you believe Charles Spencer that Charles Windsor said to him during a phone call "we'll forget her soon enough."

OP posts:

Yes I do because I believe people can think many things at once. I don't doubt for a moment Charles was feeling relieved that his problem was gone : Diana dead. I also believe he was heartbroken for his son's .
He is not used to being crossed or challenged so yes I imagine he did say something so silly in a time of personal stress.
We all know he was jealous of Diana when married to her !
This thorn in his side was gone, plucked out.

Charles Spencer is not credible. And this book is tacky and a cash in. He should let his sister rest

The same well bred man that told the woman he was having an affair with he wanted to be her tampax. Sure he never says anything vile.

Charles never said this - you’re lazily repeating a misquote/mistruth

This.

Pure spin. Utterly venomous. Charles Spencer is an awful man who treated his wives appallingly. He might help sell a few extra copies of the Daily Mail but I can't see anyone shelling out for his book.

Agreed.

He's a string of failed relationships, marriages all ending no doubt due to his behaviour- he's the common denominator it all - his own daughters refused to attend one of his weddings.

He's in the same camp as Harry IMO (narcissism and in need of therapy) but unlike poor Harry he's a nasty piece of work.

I really don't believe Earl Spencer. I think in his grief, he has seen what he wanted. Over the phone, for instance, a trembling, shocked, voice could very much sound like a trembling, excited voice. I know when a close friend of mine died suddenly, in the aftermath, my voice (and, I noticed her mum's voice) sounded very odd. Very wild and high-pitched. It could easily be construed as excitement.

It's likely that he deliberately misconstrued it to suit his own narrative.

He did say it. Something along the lines of coming back as a tampax.

No. I don’t believe for one second that if he had said it, that Charles Spencer would have kept quiet about it all these years. He’d have taken every opportunity to shout it from the rooftops every chance he got. He’s said it to sell his book.

This.

CurlewKate · Today 07:51

So what do you think prompted Spencer to make that powerful and much applauded eulogy? Did it come completely out of nowhere?

I agree. I'm no fan of KC but I suspect the visitor numbers have dropped off massively and the rain is coming in the west wing so he has to generate coin somehow.

Not a chance CS would have kept this gem to himself for 30 years. He would have deployed it as soon as Camilla was 'rehabilitated' to set all that back.

At the time Charles never appeared anything either than very shocked and grieving. He's not that good an actor so no, I don't believe Spencer's version. It's fairly obvious that he has his own agenda, and the fact that he's still trying to make money out of his deceased sister is deeply distasteful.

Prince Charles may have been devastated by guilt too.

And the fact that he knew his popularity would sink quite low in the aftermath of Diana’s death.

And his plans to marry Camilla would have to be postponed.

I believe Charles Spencer.

I think it was ‘God I hope I don’t come back as a tampax’ or words to that effect.

EmpressSisi · Today 07:59

I believe he believes it happened but I don’t believe it’s the truth.

It was neither of those Not going to add to the speculation but I do remember exactly what was said. And 35 years on it's irrelevant.

Focus ought to be on the disgusting behaviour of CS.

I think this is the point. Remember Diana wasn’t his first choice of wife and had broken all royal traditions by going on TV and giving an emotional, public interview laying the royal family bare. Washing dirty linen in public is distasteful for anyone but I can imagine it was devastating for the royal family. Especially given that she had small children at the time.

so much as I (as a non royalist) can see she did great things with her life, and was dealt a tough hand in marriage, I don’t think she behaved particularly maturely and I think any partner and family would be resentful, let alone the royals whose motto is never complain never explain. None of us should be judged by things we say in the heat of the moment.

I think Charles has found his feet with Camilla and they seem happy and contribute to society in all sorts of ways. If he did say that 30 years ago, genuinely - who cares?

You do remember why Diana chose to go on television and give a tell all interview?

~ the RF initially wanted her to maintain the fiction in public that Charles and she were happy together, no one knew at the time about the long-standing affair with Camilla, and they wanted her to keep quiet about it, despite such a profound betrayal. and when that was no longer possible, they wanted her to “go quietly”

Sorry I pressed post too soon in error so am editing to add…

~ she had been badly deceived and confronted with forged documents by the scurrilous journalist Martin Bashir who convinced her that her own staff and security personnel were spying on her.

No, he said

Prince Charles: Or, God forbid a Tampax. Just my luck!
Camilla: You are a complete idiot. Oh, what a wonderful idea.
Prince Charles: My luck to be chucked down the lavatory and go on and on forever swirling round on the top, never going down.

Exactly. Zero credibility, a man inadequate in all areas of his life projecting massively.

I hope in the BBC interview Kuenssberg challenges and asks him how much this is making him and what does he hope to achieve other than money? Does he not care how upsetting this is for William to hear Spencer's unsubstantiated attacks and cheap shots?

As an aside he has a very effeminate speaking voice and looks a bit psycho in the clips we've seen what with that weird stare.

so why has it taken 30 years to come out with it?

and what kind of man kicks another man when he's down? Ill with cancer, terrible issues with one son.

I think it's utter nonsense.

Attictroll · Today 08:04

Tbh I don’t really care . I just don’t like the whole I’m banking in on my sister by releasing a book either.

Whaleandsnail6 · Today 08:04

I don't believe he said this comment how CS has quoted it in the book

I do believe an argument took place and KC implied that the public would forget about D soon enough... something like referencing the ridiculous outpouring of grief for a woman they had never met, the outrage the royal family (rightly) remainded at Balmoral initially etc

I feel that CS is deliberately misquoting to push his own narrative in the book. People do this when retelling an argument to paint themselves in a good light, and he knows that sensational comments like that will make people want to read the book.

Daygloboo · Today 08:08

Sereine · Today 01:09

Why can't he? Why did it take 30 years for him to come up with this one? Is it because he's only just made it up in order to make money?

No.

ANNotherWriter · Today 08:09

According to stuff in the media CS and Diana had huge rows as siblings and often didn't speak for months.

There is also the accusation against him that Diana asked to live at his house at one time when she needed somewhere to 'escape ' and he refused.

Maybe he's the 'spare' like Harry- his sister got the limelight and what did he get? Nothing. A few history books published, mainly about his family properties, which probably hardly sell, and a string of divorces.

PussyGaylore · Today 08:10

I don’t think either of them are great men but on the balance of probabilities I believe CS as KC is known to get very angry and petulant.
Also it was obvious he was insanely jealous of the attention and love that PD got - there’s a few vids on YouTube where you can see him glaring angrily as PD soaks up the adoration.

I think he’s made quite a bit of money on the back of his sister. Wasn’t there an exhibition about her at his home that then went international?
