Do you believe Charles Spencer that Charles Windsor said to him during a phone call "we'll forget her soon enough."

OP posts:

Yes, the comment about “blood family” makes me wonder if he knew that there was a possibility that one of those boys was not royal blood.

Didn't think much of Diana then did he?

Cla7 · Today 13:11

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. I can imagine that KC said something along the lines of ‘the mass hysteria about her death will end soon and people will move on quickly’, and I can also imagine that this could have sounded somewhat insensitive to Earl Spencer at that time. He will have known how it was meant back then, but decided now that it is still useable for his book.

I took that a different way. I think it was Hilary Fordwich (one of many commentators) who said the Spencer family had a belief that they are true blood English aristocracy, not like those Windsors who are relatively recent derivatives of German people. Ouch.

They were getting on fine when she was killed. She was the mother of his kids, he would not have been elated

God, look at all the lurid crap about Spencer all over the papers today his cheating and booze problems etc. He really is in no position to judge anyone.

I think he'll regret this, he's getting pulled to pieces. I haven't seen anyone <except the op and a few supporters> say oh yes what a nice man I absolutely believe him Grin

I've read several accounts that said that "they were not getting on fine' when she was killed.

Not this rubbish again. Harry was about two when Diana met James Hewitt. They look nothing alike. Harry actually looks a lot like the young Prince Philip. There's red hair in the Spencer family and this isn't surprising given they are descended from Mary Boleyn, who was mistress to the famous redhead Henry VIII while married to William Carey so there is a good chance he fathered one or both of her children.

The real story is honestly salacious enough.

And if you believe that, you believe anything!

Since when does a royal prince deny themselves anything?

Camilla was at the wedding fhs!

She took Diana out to lunch while Charles was in Australia to determine whether Diana intended to hunt.

And according to quite a few royal biographers and historical accounts, Prince Charles went hunting/shooting or meeting with Camilla immediately after returning from his 1981 honeymoon with Princess Diana

And for a couple of years after that, staff have testified to the fact that as Diana drove out of Highgrove with the dc, ten minutes later, Camilla drove in!

All of which shows that Charles was at the very least having an emotional affair with Camilla as I said. It does not prove he was having a physical affair with her. Diana never claimed he was. She only claimed he was having an emotional affair. Maybe she was wrong and it was a physical affair. We don't know.

Didn't Diana say Charles said 'I refuse to be the only Prince of Wales that never had a mistress! '

He saw it as his right.

Nooo Prince Philip was a good looking bloke in his younger years!

Pipedreams607 · Today 13:36

That is a good point, I remember reading that and wondering exactly what he meant.

That would be horrendous if he meant to imply that and throw it in Charles face, knowing the rumours at the time about Harry’s parentage. (Totally debunked now that middle aged Harry is the image of his father and grandfather)

No I think the blood family phrase was directly linked to the controversial conversation with Prince Charles which arose out of Prince Charles questioning the Spencer sense of duty, when they had served as equerries and the Crown for years and years, and Spencer had just had enough.

And as Gove pointed out the other day, the blood family is what this all about as the Spencers were, or are, a major Whig English family stretching back to the 15th century and the Saxe-Coburg and Gotham are, in comparison, relative “arrivistes” so in the Spencer minds, Diana was “marrying down”.

Hence in the wierd way that the English class system works, Spencer is the only person probably who can stand up to the King and say what’s what. And frankly if a thirty-two year old man had married my nineteen year old sister when already deeply involved with another woman, which started off a series of events which ended in her death aged thirty-six, I would be upset about it twenty-nine years later too.

This.

Pure spin. Utterly venomous. Charles Spencer is an awful man who treated his wives appallingly. He might help sell a few extra copies of the Daily Mail but I can't see anyone shelling out for his book.

Just watched the second episode of Palace Confidential relating to Spencer’s book with the “lovely” Rebecca English and Richard Eden and they couldn’t wait to gloss over Charles Spencer’s comments and get straight back to attacking Harry! Absolutely hilarious! Not to mention predictable.

Yes, she did tell Andrew Morton he had said that. She still stopped short of saying his relationship with Camilla went beyond an emotional affair. I am not saying it didn't - it may well have. But it isn't clear when his affair with Camilla became physical. Similarly, it isn't clear whether Diana's affair with her bodyguard was physical. We therefore cannot say with certainty which of them was the first to be physically unfaithful. However, we can say with certainty that Charles was the first to be emotionally unfaithful.

And the comment by Charles (assuming it is accurate) shows up the difference between aristocratic morality and the moral standards held by the rest of us. In aristocratic circles, marriage was generally regarded as a strategic financial and political transaction through most of history, not something driven by love. The man was therefore free to have mistresses, visit courtesans or have liaisons with women of lower social class provided he was discreet. The woman had to remain faithful until she had produced the heir and spare so that there was no question about their parentage. After that, she was also free to do as she wished provided she was discreet.

@Longtimelurker1980 "Remember Diana wasn’t his first choice of wife"
He ended up with Diana because no-one else would have him. He proposed to -

  • Lady Amanda Knatchbull: Charles proposed to his second cousin and the granddaughter of Lord Mountbatten in 1979. She turned him down, partly due to the intense public scrutiny and the tragic assassination of her grandfather.
  • Anna Wallace: Charles proposed to socialite Anna Wallace twice in 1980. She rejected both proposals, reportedly tired of intense press attention and realizing Charles was still emotionally involved with Camilla Parker Bowles.
  • Lady Diana Spencer: Charles proposed on February 6, 1981, and she accepted. They married later that year.

I watched it too. Rebecca English makes my skin crawl and Richard Eden and his stupid socks can go fuck himself. I don't mind Richard Kay though.

I do like the presenter, Luke Blackall I think his name is? My 10 y/o thinks he's Ed Sheeran's grandpa.

On the subject of aristocratic morality or immorality depending on how you look at it,
I remember learning at university that conferred Dukedom’s were often rejected in the 17th and 18th centuries because “Duke” was virtual shorthand for “illegitimate offspring of the monarch”.

Oh come off it. They were all a bunch of Royal Family bum lickers. All excited at being actual ils to the RF. Who cares what they dated back to. They all seemed a bunch of damaged emotional wrecks thanks to their df. Now Spencer seemingly happy to drag everyone down to his petty, spiteful level. I bet thr RF rue the day the Spencers were ever on their radar.

What point are you making ? Do you extend this to Prince Harry who had several serious girlfriends who left and therefore Meghan was only the one who would take him?

GoodGirlFaith · Today 14:00

I don’t l, although having watched Spencer speak, I find him convincing and I’ve always felt his eulogy was one of the most moving and brilliantly versed speeches I’ve seen in my lifetime. He really did honour his sister perfectly. This makes me slightly biased, however, I digress…

The yes or no options make a tough choice. I think it’s possible that something was said in the heat of the phone call that the Earl is possibly misremembering. We don’t have the exact context or transcript, although I believe the row was about W&H walking with the funeral procession (on this, the Earl was right, H was too young. Although this is for Harry to decide as it affects him and no-one else).

Spencer says that he told ‘close family’ what was said, so it’ll be interesting to see if either of his sisters backs him up; I doubt they will as they both seem very private.

If it was said, I understand that he wants to tell the truth about Diana and the family she married into, but I don’t think any mother would want this for her children and grandchildren who love their father/grandfather. It is said that Diana and K.Charles were on good terms before she died.

I think King Charles is a good father (I thought he came over as one in Spare).

I find it hard to believe Charles was ‘giddy and elated’ after the Diana’s death and that discredits the Earls claims for me, really.

And so based on that, I voted no. But, boyfriend has ordered the book for me this morning.

I was watching a murder programme last night 😂 and they brought up the same thing about someone who had waited as many years to bring something up - not natural and needing help was the comment.

He should blame his own family who actively encouraged and facilitated the whole circus. Why didn't someone protect her, one of these oh so very noble Spencers going back to <insert some irrelevant king's name> times.

Why did the Spencers all let her down so badly?
