Do you believe Charles Spencer that Charles Windsor said to him during a phone call "we'll forget her soon enough."

You can't just say it was from diana herself. In what book or news article was that written. You need to provide a source.

I have provided the source. In a thread where there are a lot of wild claims with no evidence at all, at least I have provided a link.
Believe or disbelieve as you wish.

I think it's very easy to misunderstand a telephone conversation particularly when you are in shock and grief. And remember they were not on friendly terms at the time and I'm sure Charles Spencer blamed Charles for his sister's death so I imagine the conversation was acrimonious and regrettable things may have been said on both sides. I can imagine Charles saying something like it will get better with time, interpreted as we will forget her. I don't suppose we will ever know what was actually said.

Flufffluff11 · Today 12:12

King Charles is odious. I don't like jealous men who hate their wife's successes. He was so clearly jealous of Diana

Wolverine23 · Today 12:13

Yes I wouldn't rule it. It's the way he is. He's very cold and plays to the camera.

LizzieSiddal · Today 12:14

I was open minded about the “we will soon forget her” remark but now we’ve heard Spencer has written that KC “sounded like a lottery winner” and I thought, no you are lying and deranged.

KC had just told his sons their mother was dead, I really don’t believe he would be sounding like a lottery winner.

Also Spencer has been married 4 times and was not at the wedding of one of his daughters. Diana was not talking to him when she died. I think he probably feels huge guilt about the way he treated her (and his ex wives and children) and has decided he needs to put the spotlight on others.

Wadsworthy · Today 12:17

If their partner is more popular, more successful than them, they get jealous of her.

David Dimbleby commented in an interview on the BBC R4 Today programme that "the Palace" resented Diana's popularity both while she was alive and at her death. And he's just made a very well-connected & evidenced documentary about the Windsors for the BBC. It's on iPLayer

foriamtheratofthehighway · Today 12:17

I kind of believe both tbh - I think it's credible KC said something along those lines but probably in the context of the public hysteria and/or the manner in which she died. Not that she'd be forgotten. I also think the 'giddiness' wasn't joy but more the adrenaline coursing through his system after having to tell his two young sons about their mother/ deal with the public just not letting him think straight, sound different iyswim.

Do I believe he was devastated at Diana's death? Probably not. Devastated for his sons maybe. Was their private relief in the palace? I can believe that. It was a shocking death so I can see many emotions running through people. Not always rational.

I think he's capable of being that cruel. I've also seen people be cruel in real life right after someone died. Cruel people usually pick on people at their weakest moment as it is fun for them

All of this is obviously just my opinion....

I suspect something was said in anger.

Earl Spencer (ES) openly admits he was having a go at the now King Charles (KC). KC had already had discussions regarding the funeral and if the boys wanted to walk behind the coffin, ultimately they agreed to do it, they weren't forced. It was none of ES business and definitely not for him to dictate what his nephews should do especially as he wasn't particularly close to Diana or the boys. If my children were going through a horrendous bereavement I would be very quick to tell my BIL to butt out if he stuck his nose in.

My suspicion is KC, who was going through the most stressful time of his life, exhausted and devastated for his children etc ended up having a heated argument with ES and both of them said things they shouldn't in the heat of the moment.

If he did say Diana would soon be forgotten about, I would imagine he meant the media frenzy and all the crazy people going bonkers with grief over someone they've never met. I don't think he would think her family would forget her.

Yeah, this is my take on it too. I think anger and grief in the moment meant a comment was fired at ES by KC - not necessarily about his feelings about Diana (which were complicated), more about the situation. I was 14 when she died and I remember being really astonished at the craziness of the grief displayed by people who didn't know her. It was completely over the top. I'm from Scotland though - I didn't see as much of it up here tbh; I read some schools shut in England?! Our school didn't shut and there were no street marches or anything like in England. People just lost their minds. I imagine that factored into whatever was said between the two Charles's - I'd have found a bunch of people claiming Diana as THEIR person to grieve for who'd never met her over her actual ex husband and sons as quite upsetting tbh if I'd been her family. They'd feel that it's not your grief? That's probably what the feeling was behind whatever was said.

@CherryKerry

No the quote was

‘rest assured we will forget her soon enough ‘

WE

He included himself .
Shocking

I would like to know what was behind Spencer’s eulogy at the funeral. Surely that didn’t come out of a trusting relationship? Out of a relationship in which Spencer believed his sister’s memory and his nephew’s were in good hands?

Yes, the comment about “blood family” makes me wonder if he knew that there was a possibility that one of those boys was not royal blood.

Oooooh, two thirds of almost 1700 people so far (in the poll) don't believe Charles Spencer! Go figure!

I have similar thoughts to yours. I think his comments on "lottery winner and giddy with excitement" is not believable. These were 2 men who didn't get on, they only ever spoke twice to discuss the funeral so KC3 would be highly unlikely to portray this to Spencer.

KC3 was very aware of public sadness so it just not credible that he would give this impression to a Diana's family. KC3 may be many things but I doubt he's that's stupid.

The book has been published and I’d imagine was carefully checked beforehand.

Charles has not denied it. He just tried to smear Spencer - very damning and that act alone has persuaded people that Spencer is telling the truth .

I imagine there is a lot more to come out

They all do

They all walk around with their mouths open - god knows why - they must think it makes them look ‘engaged’ or lively.

Camilla doesn’t and looks better in photos as a result .

I think we all know that the RF board on Mumsnet is not the most unbiased of places from which to glean opinions about the King!

That is a good point, I remember reading that and wondering exactly what he meant.

That would be horrendous if he meant to imply that and throw it in Charles face, knowing the rumours at the time about Harry’s parentage. (Totally debunked now that middle aged Harry is the image of his father and grandfather)

Owl55 · Today 12:46

I think there probably is some element of truth to what Spencer says , the Royal family will do anything to protect themselves at all times including harming their own family members to protect senior royals .

No. I don’t believe for one second that if he had said it, that Charles Spencer would have kept quiet about it all these years. He’d have taken every opportunity to shout it from the rooftops every chance he got. He’s said it to sell his book.

This

Flufffluff11 · Today 12:50

Of course KC said it. He's a cold cruel man, who by many accounts was extremely jealous of Diana. He couldn't bare to be outshined by her

They were getting on fine when she was killed. She was the mother of his kids, he would not have been elated

God, look at all the lurid crap about Spencer all over the papers today his cheating and booze problems etc. He really is in no position to judge anyone.

I think he'll regret this, he's getting pulled to pieces. I haven't seen anyone <except the op and a few supporters> say oh yes what a nice man I absolutely believe him Grin

Before Diana’s death the whole Royal family wanted to get her out of the picture. So yes, they were relieved when she was gone in that sense.

i fully believe Earl Spencer.
