Do you believe Charles Spencer that Charles Windsor said to him during a phone call "we'll forget her soon enough."

Diana willingly gave up her Police protection. If anyone is to blame re her not being protected, how about Martin Bashir who lied to her, telling her the Police were spying on her and reporting back to the then Prince Charles. Or Mohammed al-Fayed, with his sub-standard staff, who was using her as part of his war against the British establishment as he couldn’t get a passport.

No. I don’t believe Charles said that, or was giddy with elation. Not for a second. You could see his grief in his face when he brought her home from France. He was bereft.

I agree with this. Charles is far too careful what he says and to whom.

At that point, if anything, Diana's death made life more difficult for Charles. He was gradually rehabilitating Camilla into British life and they were co-parenting well and life had settled down for all concerned. The press were still chasing Diana all over the place because it sold copy and still does but she had been far more circumspect in her behaviour for a long time because she was in a relationship with Hasnat Khan and he hated all the rigmarole.

I'm beginning to wonder if Earl Spencer is quite well.

And if you believe that, you believe anything!

Since when does a royal prince deny themselves anything?

Camilla was at the wedding fhs!

She took Diana out to lunch while Charles was in Australia to determine whether Diana intended to hunt.

And according to quite a few royal biographers and historical accounts, Prince Charles went hunting/shooting or meeting with Camilla immediately after returning from his 1981 honeymoon with Princess Diana

And for a couple of years after that, staff have testified to the fact that as Diana drove out of Highgrove with the dc, ten minutes later, Camilla drove in!

Diana twigged before they even got married. But “It’s too late Duch your face is on the tea towels.

Yep.
And notice how those defending the king keep mentioning harry. Because that's who they want us to fight about.
Not the king. He is supposed to be treated like a living saint, while anyone who says anything negative about him is just crazy.
People are noticing this modus operandi. Call everyone crazy, and then promote mental health charities.
It stinks.
Charles Windsor clearly said this, and his reaction is not to say I didn't say this. Instead it's to say you're crazy.

Yes

Back to Earl Spencer (is that his actual title? Or is it Lord Spencer?)

His book "A Very Private School" was actually well written but holy fuck it was a hard read. If he's recounting his childhood memories even close to accurate- that little boy was abused. Badly.

Moving forward, I've read that CS has done "Hoffman Therapy". If that is true, it demonstrates how desperate he must be to improve his mental health. The Hoffman Institute has largely been debunked as snake-oil for the rich.

I think he's quite damaged emotionally. Yes, he can write books and do TV interviews sounding like an intelligent, rational person - which he is. He can be an Earl, custodian of a massive estate, brother of Diana, uncle of the future King and still be well fucked up.

He's done wrong by selling off his sister's story like this, but part of me feels sorry for him. Money doesn't buy happiness and all that.

I think that a lot of children who went to boarding school at that time were abused. My dad, same age as Charles Spencer, won a scholarship to boarding school when he was a child. He told me that he was badly abused and would never send a child of his own to boarding school

It was how it was. They were horrible places full of abuse. There was no student welfare in those days

Poor man. It's true to say that Charles Spencer's experience was similarly horrific, and his book about it is a harrowing read. He's clearly a very damaged man. That takes a lot of healing.

I do believe Diana was topped. I don't believe he said this. It makes no sense. Nobody with any brain cells would imagine that anybody would forget Diana in any way. She was iconic and had taken the hearts of the world. It's a daft thing to even imagine saying. Also, it makes no sense in the context of her death. He had two young sons who would remember her forever. Her death was a hugely public affair, especially given the circumstances. Only a fool would think she could be forgotten, and he's no fool no matter what you think of his personality.

What about if he meant it as a threat though Lougle in the heat of the moment?

To me it sounds like that, said after a pause according to CS, that KC made up his mind then and there that Diana would be forgotten if he had anything to do with it.

Prince Charles hired Mark Bolland one year before Princess Diana's death remember

And sorry to repeat it but that PR campaign is what Patrick Jephson said was linked;

“to a pretty vile campaign to publicise a bogus psychiatric diagnosis that Princess Diana had a personality disorder.”

“This may have cost the Prince a lot of money, paying for PR spin doctors”

“I think it also raises ethical question marks over the methods they (Prince Charles’ PR representatives) have used.”

To me all of these details add up.

No, and of course children weren't believed. At least he didn't replicate it by sending his own children to boarding school, as many people do.

MabelAnderson · Today 11:14

Sereine · Today 01:14

At the time it was plain that actually he was centred on his grieving children and on protecting them, apart from his own grief. By all contemporaneous accounts, he and Diana had actually been getting on pretty well at that point. It just isn't credible that he would have said what Spencer claims he said. On the other hand, it's easy to imagine Spencer saying precisely this about his exes if they died, given his attitude towards them, so maybe it's just wishful thinking on his part.

Spencer made a comment in his speech at his wedding to Victoria, something about staying together through thick and thin, and that she was thick and certainly thin. She has anorexia. It was probably supposed to be funny, but so unpleasant. No surprises that they divorced.
I am sorry that he was abused at boarding school and no doubt this has had a lifelong effect, but he hardly seems like the font of human kindness.

True. Those who are abused often become abusers, unless they work very hard to get help and support.

MarchionessVonSausage · Today 11:16

The school I went to in Australia was about 80/20 day students to boarding. Never heard anything bad from the boarding students, they liked it. This was 1990's and an all girl school.

Before anyone gets upset, I'm told boarding school in the UK and everywhere else is much better now!

Pingsung · Today 11:17

Diana said of her brother that he was an abusive husband and a terrible brother. Not a huge recommendation.

Yes we are really talking about the time when Earl Spencer went to boarding school, which was long before the 1990s. They were full of abuse at that stage. Earl spencer wrote that he was sexually absused at the school at age 11.
My dad went to a boarding school at the same time. He told me he was also sexually and physically abused. My dad never got over it and would talk about the abuse until late in his life.

Diana twigged before they even got married. But “It’s too late Duch your face is on the tea towels.

NONE of that gives any credibility to what Spencer has said.

Yes, the marriage was doomed.
And for reasons it's clear to understand with hindsight.
It was a very unfortunate marriage - in essence an arranged marriage.
Charles was under huge pressure to marry.

If you weren't a mature adult then you won't have lived through his romances and the enormous pressure from his parents to find the right bride.
It was a mistake.

You could argue that Diana's behaviour where she slept with numerous men, many married, was not good behaviour and for her sons to be subjected to that very public behaviour was damaging.
At least Charles has been faithful in effect to one woman.

That doesn't mean the King said those things.

I was well into my 30s when Diana died.

I saw the way Charles behaved when she died. Anyone who saw him arrive on the tarmac, leaving the plane, after going to identify her body would know he looked a broken man.

diddl · Today 11:19

Wasn't it CS who either introduced Diana to Bashir or encouraged her to do the interview?

He probably carries some guilt about that if so.

He couldn't publish the book until now as certain people are no longer alive.

But did he really have to do it at all?

It seems to me that like Harry he is unburdening himself.

I genuinely can't understand anyone who thinks that - what Charles looks like in front of cameras, is what he is actually like.

People act their best in front of other people. My friend told me that her grandfather was very well respected in her community. That out in public, he was a nice kind man.

Behind closed doors she said that he was an extremely abusive man

Emmm to be really honest. No.

My Dad became very abusive, sexually abusive, cold and mean himself.

So I was more dealing with this, then feeling angry about his childhood

Bloody hell. You really think someone can turn on looking devastated for the press?

You presumably weren't around or old enough to watch it live.

I can assure you it wasn't acting and for someone distraught it was a massive intrusion of privacy.

This wasn't a Bashir interview where someone had a script.
