From a man who has treated a succession of wives abominably I don’t really have much time for what he says on the subject. And I’m no fan of the king either. But really - pots and kettles come to mind

Pots and kettles don't really come to mind as none of Earl Spencers wives have died, and no one said that Earl spencer was giddy, elated and excited after his ex wife died

What does everyone think about this specific scenario?

What are your thoughts, OP?

sittingonabeach · 18/09/2026 19:56

I’m assuming there’s a reason some of his children are estranged from Spencer

DuckDuckG00se · 18/09/2026 19:58

Honestly, I can get "giddy" when I'm under a lot of stress and running around like a blue-arsed fly trying to bring order to a tragedy or crisis.

So to me, it sounds like he was running on adrenaline and when you consider everything he was doing at that point, that makes sense.

Also...it was 25 years ago. It just feels pointless and distasteful to air all this publicly now.

ShanghaiDiva · 18/09/2026 20:00

My thoughts are that for someone who declared at his sister’s funeral that the blood family would look after W and H, he really isn’t living up to the statement. Assuming the comment is true, he really doesn’t need to share it with the whole world. What does he hope to achieve other than upset people and increase sales of his tawdry little book.

Telecone · 18/09/2026 20:05

Precisely shang. Dragging this all up now isn't the action of someone who claims to care about PW and PH.

He needs to zip it and stop stirring for money.

Flufffluff11 · 18/09/2026 20:06

More information is coming out.

Earl Spencer has said that Prince Charles sounded "like a lottery winner" after Diana died.

Bollocks.

I should think it waa a living hell - 2 sons to protect from.the media, knowing the media would be nit picking over everything.. World news... doubt he phoned up someone he hardly ever spoke to and sounded excited.

He sounds a right knobber this Spencer bloke. Is he needing money so writing sensational books.

Quote of the day 😆

Cucurella · 18/09/2026 20:10

He’s writing absolute rubbish. I’ve just read that he said Diana’s body was kept in the Chapel Royal, across the road from St James’s Palace. The chapel is inside the palace. I guess he didn’t bother to visit or he would know where it was.

Can’t argue with that.

KC was trained from birth to not show emotion. Act in a very measured way. Never show what he really thinks

The chances that he was so out of control elated he phoned her family to let them know how happy he was seems really remote to me, whatever his actual feelings may have been.

Theunamedcat · 18/09/2026 20:14

I think its bullshit i dislike the shit out of my ex he has caused real harm and distress to his own children I would still be upset for my children if he died Im sure i would be able to maintain my dignity with his family and im not media trained nor a celebrity im just a normal person but I have children and that brings responsibility for their mental and physical well being

Brideofclover · 18/09/2026 20:14

I would say the only person who treated her death as akin to winning the lottery is Earl Spencer himself! He’s been making money off the back of his sisters death almost since the day she died!
i suspect he needs more money now so the claims are getting wilder and wilder and I don’t believe any of it!
Whatever happened between Charles and Diana, he wouldn’t have acted like the claims because of his boys and his loyalty to his mother Queen Elizabeth and monarchy as a whole! He may be many things but he’s not stupid!

goudacheese · 18/09/2026 20:15

Perhaps his first wife she write a book about his affairs and how he treated her.

That's different though.

Prince Charles did not like Diana at that stage of their lives. That was obvious. A man said that he met Diana and told Prince Charles that he met her. Charles said to him in reply 'and you survived meeting her, did you'.

By many other accounts, Charles was also jealous of Diana. He was the Royal, yet Diana always got more attention from the public. She was affecting his life negatively.

Princess Diana dying also let him be free to marry Camilla.

He benefitted from Diana's death. It's not far fetched to think that he was happy.
It makes him look bad though

Despite the fact I'm engaging on this thread, I'm not a royal-watcher and only just old enough to remember Diana's funeral. But even I'm aware of the numerous contemporary reports about how pole-axed and devastated Charles was at the time - and that he and Diana were also friendly at the time her death.

Reports from who? Can you give an example

Absolutely.
The man is a pig.

momtoboys · 18/09/2026 20:20

It seems that many people have forgotten what a shit Charles was at that time in his life. He and that horse faced wife of his seem to have had all forgiven but their selfishness caused a lot of heartache in those days. I don't doubt for one minute he was giddy at the thought that he didn't have to be bothered with Diana anymore. She had so far eclipsed him in popularity that I'm sure it made him bonkers.

FetchezLaVache · 18/09/2026 20:20

How does Spencer know this? Because I can't believe that the King would have bounced up and down saying How Jolly Marvellous in front of a man who'd just lost his sister, or anyone in a position to report back to the Spencer family, quite honestly.

100% this. I’m no fan of any of them, but this just sounds so insanely implausible.
And why would release this now? He’s had 29 years.

Oh yeah he was definitely jealous. I remember Diana said in an interview herself, that if the two of them walked down a street, the people on Charles side of the street all complained that they had to talk to him instead of Diana. And then he would get angry.

Instead of being jealous of Diana, he should have improved his own personality. I would have preferred to have talked to Diana too. She was interesting. He seemed alright. But she was definitely more appealing and inretesting

Well then you're naive.

Diana said that Prince Charles was cruel to her just after one of her friends died.
