News articles today have released a new snippet from Earl Spencer's book.

Earl Spencer says Prince Charles was 'excited, elated and giddy' after Diana died.

What are your thoughts on this comment?

I honestly do not believe this for an instant. Leaving aside the relationship between Charles and Diana, he had just been told that the mother of his two sons had died. Surely nobody with even an ounce of compassion would ‘sound elated’ about that?

SpottyAlpaca · 18/09/2026 20:53

He’s got a book to flog. What do you expect? 🙄

But remember when Diana's friend died. she said that Prince Charles was was cruel to her right after her friend died.

100% this. I’m no fan of any of them, but this just sounds so insanely implausible.
And why would release this now? He’s had 29 years.

Edited

Because Charles is on his way out and Spencer wants a reaction whilst he's still alive. No point going after a dead man. I believe Spencer, Charles III is an absolute twat.

LivelyGreyShark · 18/09/2026 20:57

I remember how angry Charles Spencer seemed at the Royal Family when Diana died.

StormGazing · 18/09/2026 20:57

Spencer hasn’t coated himself in glory in his life - I think he’s a shark personally. I’m old enough to remember those tragic days and I remember Charles doing what he could to ensure BP did their thing to do what’s best for Diana’s death and funeral. He was distraught, and he and Diana had a good relationship by that time (same time next week and all that) … personally I think Spencer is just lining his pockets with his dead sisters life story… let’s face it he didn’t help her when she needed it!

No it's not relevant because I'm pointing out that it doesn't make sense.

You wrote to me 'as you think it's true, I'm not quite sure why you started this thread'

I pointed out that the premise of this thread is not to determine whether it's true or not. Also if I have an opinion one way or the other - it doesn't stop me or anyone else from starting a thread. This is a discussion forum

You don't stop anyone from starting threads. So that was a completely irrelevant point.

Your opinion on what this thread is actually about - is welcome

Absolutely it's a discussion forum - and discussions and opinions on what you write is what you'll get.

Now, back to the topic in hand.

TeenLifeMum · 18/09/2026 20:59

He had to tell his sons their beloved mother had died! Honestly, there’s a high chance he was medicated following such a loss so who knows what happened behind closed doors but I’m confident Spencer isn’t a reliable source.

dreamingofgoodhair · 18/09/2026 20:59

Flufffluff11 · 18/09/2026 20:16

That's different though.

Prince Charles did not like Diana at that stage of their lives. That was obvious. A man said that he met Diana and told Prince Charles that he met her. Charles said to him in reply 'and you survived meeting her, did you'.

By many other accounts, Charles was also jealous of Diana. He was the Royal, yet Diana always got more attention from the public. She was affecting his life negatively.

Princess Diana dying also let him be free to marry Camilla.

He benefitted from Diana's death. It's not far fetched to think that he was happy.
It makes him look bad though

He was free to marry Camilla , they were divorced.

Very neatly summed up. If ever recollections varied in order to make a fast buck or 2, this was the time.

MellowSubmarine · 18/09/2026 21:01

I think you’d have to be a sociopath to go through the absolute hell of telling your young children their mother died, and then be elated about it to the point of telling her brother about it.

I’m no fan of the royal family, but I think this is a massive stretch to believe.

Leopardheart01 · 18/09/2026 21:01

KC had no problem whatsoever ditching his Royal training to bare his teeth and treat those serving him in a horribly derogatory manner when he was signing the accession documents after Mama's death. He was rabid IMV that day and the mask slipped big time.

So I can absolutely believe that he made some sort of derisory comment about Diana. I don't believe he rated her much as a member of the inner circle, and he was also jealous of her popularity whereas he was just a grey man in a grey suit with no charisma whatsoever. I believe CS that KC made a comment because he could. Or thought he could.

Are you talking about the pen incident? If so then you are massively exaggerating!

The last Royal before Charles who had tried to marry a divorced person - was not allowed to.

They didnt have facetime back then so if his voice sounded giddy, its because he was shocked and adrenaline would have been coursing through his veins

spencer is undignified! Pouring oil on the fire that is the relationship of his nephew and parent

SpidersAreShitheads · 18/09/2026 21:02

I think it's absolute bollocks.

If he'd said that King Charles had been impatient, curt, or frustrated, it would have been believable. I don't think King Charles is a man who suffers fools gladly, and at a time of such enormous stress it wouldn't be hard to believe that he might have been a bit abrupt.

But giddy and elated like a lottery winner?! Give over.

As PP have said, Charles Spencer hasn't been shy about speaking out over the years, there's no way he hung onto this for 30 years.

When Diana died, she had a very distant relationship with her brother. In contrast, she was on good terms with King Charles - apparently they used to pop in for tea with each other regularly.

I'm old enough to remember Diana's death. Charles looked genuinely distraught. He went over to accompany her body home, a courtesy that she wasn't automatically entitled to as she was no longer royal. And if the rumours are true, Charles was the one who argued with the Queen to ensure that Diana was given a full royal send-off rather than being treated like the private citizen she then was.

There's nothing at all to suggest what Charles Spencer has claimed is remotely true. And even if it were true, what disgusting things to make public, knowing the added scrutiny it will pile onto his nephews who he swore to protect.

He's a shitebag.

Oh - and you asked for links earlier OP - here's a couple but feel free to google as there are plenty more out there. Should you want to find them, of course...

Yeah but he could have got a reaction at any point in the past 29 years 🤷🏻‍♀️. I agree King Charles is a twat. So is Earl Spencer. Neither cover themselves in glory, but I think this is all about £££

villadicance · 18/09/2026 21:04

I think it's always been a bit odd the extent to which people have expected Charles to have been the devastated grieving widower. I have never seen another ex husband expected to be chief mourner at their ex wife's funeral.

If Charles had died, no one would have expected Diana to be devastated.

Of course normal people feel something at the death of an ex/parent of their children but at the end of the day, they got divorced because they didn't like or love each other, it's ok if he wasn't in bits when she died.

I don't find it a massive stretch at all. People can be cruel. I've seen lots of bitter cruel divorces too. Divorced couples often end up absolutely hating each other.

My own parents are divorced. A Bitter divorce. My mother said to me that when you get divorced - divorce lawyers build up the aggression and nastiness and make the couple hate each other even more.

When my dad died, my mother, while not sounding giddily happily, definitely didn't express any empathetic words over his death. All She said to me after his death was 'it's like that part of my life never existed and I never knew him'

Yes I wouldn't expect him to really care or be empathetic about her death.

He could have tried not to sound as happy as a lottery winner to her brother though (if that did happen)

I cannot imagine that a man who’s just had to tell his beloved boys that their mother is dead would be ‘as giddy as a lotto winner’. I can imagine that a man that emotionally and physically abused his first wife and dumped his second wife by text is making up bollocks for money. Diana wasn’t even speaking to him when she died, as evidenced at Paul Burrell’s trial.

I’m not saying they can’t have hated each other. I’m saying that regardless of how you feel about them, if you’ve just had presumably sobbing children distraught at the loss of their mother, you’d have to be a monster to be capable of elation at that point.

What is your point op? You clearly dislike KC and this thread hasn’t gone the way you intended, for us all to hop on the let’s diss the king train. All your but this but that responses it’s obvious.

it’s highly, highly unlikely that Spencer’s account is true but we will never know will we? No point trying to persuade everyone. Yes it’s a discussion forum etc etc but for this precise topic there isn’t much to discuss. Angry man makes claims to sell books. Majority of population know it’s highly unlikely given all the facts we actually have to hand. That’s it really, no?

CoventryCity · 18/09/2026 21:12

Well, he's got a divorce to pay for and I suppose he needs a bit of cash. Repulsive. Like his dimwit nephew Harry.

@Flufffluff11 "The last Royal before Charles who had tried to marry a divorced person - was not allowed to."
You're talking about Princess Margaret and Peter Townsend when the world was a very different place in 1955?
By 1992 the world had changed when a divorced Princess Anne married Tim Laurence.
Both marriages were in the reign of HMTLQE.

I don't dislike KC.

"and this thread hasn’t gone the way you intended, for us all to hop on the let’s diss the king train. "

That's pure rubbish.

When has anyone on mum's net started a thread expecting every single person to agree with them.

It wouldn't be possible and it would also be a boring discussion.

I like hearing all viewpoints.
