That's different though.

Prince Charles did not like Diana at that stage of their lives. That was obvious. A man said that he met Diana and told Prince Charles that he met her. Charles said to him in reply 'and you survived meeting her, did you'.

By many other accounts, Charles was also jealous of Diana. He was the Royal, yet Diana always got more attention from the public. She was affecting his life negatively.

Princess Diana dying also let him be free to marry Camilla.

He benefitted from Diana's death. It's not far fetched to think that he was happy.
It makes him look bad though

No, it’s not far fetched to think he was happy. It’s very far fetched to think he would have openly expressed that happiness to his ex wife’s brother though.

KC was trained from birth to not show emotion. Act in a very measured way. Never show what he really thinks

The chances that he was so out of control elated he phoned her family to let them know how happy he was seems really remote to me, whatever his actual feelings may have been.

KC had no problem whatsoever ditching his Royal training to bare his teeth and treat those serving him in a horribly derogatory manner when he was signing the accession documents after Mama's death. He was rabid IMV that day and the mask slipped big time.

So I can absolutely believe that he made some sort of derisory comment about Diana. I don't believe he rated her much as a member of the inner circle, and he was also jealous of her popularity whereas he was just a grey man in a grey suit with no charisma whatsoever. I believe CS that KC made a comment because he could. Or thought he could.

winter8090 · 18/09/2026 20:27

I don’t think he’s a credible individual.

I also don’t think that many people would be excited, elated and giddy after the mother of their child died.
But he’s got a book to sell right.

I hope he spends some of the proceeds for therapy.

Prince Charles didn't express it in saying "Im happy".

Earl Spencer said that Prince Charles just SOUNDED happy.

All that Earl Spencer has said that Prince Charles actually said in words is that Prince Charles said 'we will forget Diana soon enough'

I like the Palace statement. Basically a new version of ‘recollections may vary’ with an added hint of delusion.
No I think Spencer is a manipulative, whiny, graceless spoilt pig of a man. He should be embarrassed to be such a grifter.

SidekickSylvia · 18/09/2026 20:27

Charles had a very good relationship with Diana in the year leading up to her death. He looked devastated after she died, so I don't believe Charles Spencer. He also claimed that KC said he'd quickly forget her, but how could he when his eldest son was her image? It's all sensationalist rubbish, to make money.

Prince Charles was extremely jealous of Diana. She was also causing him a lot of stress by writing books about how awful Charles was, she gave tv interviews about his affair. She was publicly embrassing him. I'm sure he did feel relief rather than sadness at her death.

He should have tried to stop himself from sounding giddily happy to others though as it just looks bad.

You don’t think that Prince Charles has been well trained over the years in disguising his emotions?
Also ‘he sounded elated’ is entirely subjective. That may have been panic, or stress, or just pure adrenaline.

Both men are vile.

MissBattleaxe · 18/09/2026 20:31

I imagine Charles sounded like he was on the brink of hysteria but I also think he's been well trained in not giving that vibe to the bereaved. Nobody comes out of this smelling of roses. Whatever people say about Diana cheating it's well documented that he had deep feelings for Camilla before she walked down to aisle.
Also I'm sick of reading about how furious William is all the time. It's like a permanent state for him!

Well Prince Charles is old enough that I don't hate him, and I feel he's had his stresses like everyone else.

I think he was giddily elated when Diana died though. I definitely believe that and it's interesting to hear it from the Earls perspective

We don’t actually know that Prince William is actually furious about anything though, we only have the word of ‘sources’!

I think he's a money grabbing lowlife who knows that this sort of claim is going to raise the profile of his book and make him more ££££ out of his sister's death, while ignoring the effect it's likely to have on his nephews and their families.

You appear to be certain that what he's claiming is true though OP, so I'm not quite sure why started this thread.

Didn't King Charles also participate in writing a book?

Yes I think it's true. I didn't ask if it was true or not did I. I asked for people's thoughts. This thread is not setting out to find out whether it's true or not.

So you writing ' You appear to be certain that what he's claiming is true though OP, so I'm not quite sure why started this thread' is not relevant.

I like to hear all opinions. Think it's true, think it's not true. All opinions are welcome.

.... so what if he was? It's not as if they were besties, they hated each other from what I can gather.

Picoloangel · 18/09/2026 20:42

Fairly neutral on KC but none of this rings true to me. I just don’t understand why this is all being brought up now. Is this somehow related to Harry’s return?
Is it some sort of cynical attempt to set
up a Diana based alternative monarchy or is it money? I just don’t get why now.
I find it all quite sad - it’s only going to result in a worse relationship between H and the RF.

MrMarkhamsFanClub · 18/09/2026 20:42

@Flufffluff11 "Earl Spencer says Prince Charles was 'excited, elated and giddy' after Diana died."

Id say Charles was devastated, if you saw him at the airport as Diana's coffin was put on the plane he looked distraught.
I'd also say Charles Spencer is creating a narrative to suit his own ends - clickbait moneymaking fantasy.

Thecows · 18/09/2026 20:43

Completely ridiculous that he would have reacted like that. Stressed to bits probably. Spencer bloke is just awful bringing this up now I mean wtaf?

Dazedandconfused28 · 18/09/2026 20:43

I think he's making wild accusations that can never be proven or disproven. To describe someone as 'giddy' is completely open to interpretation - and I can't imagine Charles thought Diana's death was a good thing. He must have anticipated that she would be deified in death, and his actions would come under even closer scrutiny.

I really question his motives in doing this now.

SemperIdem · 18/09/2026 20:44

Earl Spencer has not been backward in coming forward these past 30 years. If Charles had truly behaved in such a manner, it would have been made public knowledge long before now.

He may well have felt some personal relief however I do believe the pain be felt for his children would out rank any personal relief.

i believe he would have been smart enough to not show any personal relief he did feel - especially to her brother.

KC may have snapped under annger and said it. He’s got previous on that. We’ll never know. But why is the earl dragging all this up 30 years later? I don’t think he’s in the proper frame of mind.

No it's not relevant because I'm pointing out that it doesn't make sense.

You wrote to me 'as you think it's true, I'm not quite sure why you started this thread'

I pointed out that the premise of this thread is not to determine whether it's true or not. Also if I have an opinion one way or the other - it doesn't stop me or anyone else from starting a thread. This is a discussion forum

You don't stop anyone from starting threads. So that was a completely irrelevant point.

Your opinion on what this thread is actually about - is welcome

"Why is the earl dragging it up"

Well a lot of them have written books haven't they. It seems to be the 'done thing' these days.
