But that makes no sense - her death particularly in such a dramatic and violent way was the worst thing that could have happened to Charles.

He was just getting to a point where Diana was clearly moving on with new men - Camilla was quietly rehabilitating her image, the public had stopped mostly taking sides.

Diana living, remarrying, maybe having another child, aging, co-parenting the future King etc etc

All of that would have made Charles’ life much easier.

Her death turned him into the villain in the eyes of many, and it meant the chance of marrying Camilla and having her accepted had to be delayed by another decade.

He knew that Diana’s early death was not a good thing for the royal family - there’s no way he would be elated.

Her death turned him into a villain.

He was already unpopular though

Yes but stop butting into a conversation that was nothing to do with you, and after the other poster has already apologised to me for reading it wrong. You're dragging on something that was already over. Move on

It’s a public forum. I don’t know if you think you can have private conversations on a public forum, but it’s usually how they work. It has ‘something to do with me’ because it was posted on a public forum, which by nature invites commentary from whoever would like to join in.
But I shall move on, as this is really boring.

Princess Margaret could have married Peter Townsend but I believe she would have had to give up being a princess. She made a choice. I was a small girl at the time and I remember people talking about it and a picture of her on the front of the paper, looking very sad.

Yes, she would have had to give up her royal status.

If she had posted on MN 'I am 23 years old. I want to marry a divorced man 16 years older than me who has two children' what advice would she have been given?

The previous divorcee before Margaret and Peter Townsend was considered unsuitable for very good reasons additional to her divorced status.

Poor 'oul Margaret. Religion had too much control at the time

Spencer is doing this now to create a stink and cash in on the 30th anniversary of Diana's death. He saw how Harry got away with atrocious made up stuff in his book, so probably thought 'why not?'. It's all a bit rich coming from someone who treats his own wives with contempt.

InternationallyRecognisableIndividual · 18/09/2026 22:07

Well, since he clearly wasn't giddy and elated and was visibly grief-stricken and devastated, I think it's an exceptionally cruel thing to say. He was probably in a very heightened state, running on adrenaline and unable to process what had happened.

Don’t forget this is guy who created bound copies of his Diana eulogy and sold them for £30 a pop in the Althorp gift shop - he would even set up a little booth so you could get a signed copy!

That's different though.

Prince Charles did not like Diana at that stage of their lives. That was obvious. A man said that he met Diana and told Prince Charles that he met her. Charles said to him in reply 'and you survived meeting her, did you'.

By many other accounts, Charles was also jealous of Diana. He was the Royal, yet Diana always got more attention from the public. She was affecting his life negatively.

Princess Diana dying also let him be free to marry Camilla.

He benefitted from Diana's death. It's not far fetched to think that he was happy.
It makes him look bad though

He could have married camilla earlier had she lived she was close to picking a high profile man to marry the second she did that Charles would be free to marry camilla her dying meant he had to wait

Right, what are my thoughts? I think that if CS says that anyone sounds anything that is not a fact. I think that CW was shocked and saddened and under great stress. I can imagine he might have lost his temper or at least been impatient and testy. Whether he said that Diana would soon be forgotten I've no idea. If he did I think he wouldn't seriously have meant it but said it because he was exasperated. I definitely don't think he would have been giddily elated, even if CS says that he sounded like that. I don't think it's the most awful thing in the world for someone to lose his/her temper.

Diana's death didn't mean that C and C could suddenly get married. In fact I think it put it back. I don't think he was ever elated that Diana had died but I do think that she was exhausting in some ways and I think that after a while, when the first furore was over, his life became calmer.

I am willing to believe that HMQE2 said, at first, something like, "Now what's she up to?" and I don't think that's awful. Diana had been in the papers, spending time with Dodi on a yacht, looking fabulous, diving beautifully for the cameras, and being criticised by some newspapers. I think the boys had been with her on the yacht for a while, before they went for the next part of their summer break with Papa at Balmoral. I think they'd met Dodi and weren't keen but correct me anyone, if I have that wrong. I'm not surprised the Queen thought, "Oh, what now?" and then I suppose she was very shocked to hear that Diana had died. I don't think she'd have been elated, either.

Grim. Really really grim. Floggjng signed copies of a eulogy.....that is utterly disgusting. Shows that he has been exploiting his sister for years....nothing he says is truthful.

And her death turned her into a saint.

Diana was no angel, she knew how to manipulate the press, she knew how to charm men, she could very easily have caused untold scandal had she lived.

I liked her, but I don’t believe she merits the halo everyone has her wearing.

I don't think her death made her more popular. She was already really popular whe she was alive. I remember. I miss when she was alive. There has been no one quite like her since.

Poor 'oul Margaret. Religion had too much control at the time

It was nothing todo with religion.
It was the government of the day’s decision.
Would you like to post some links for the claims you keep making rather than saying ‘I’ve read blah blah blah’. ‘Prince Charles did not like Diana at that t8me of her life’

Of course it had something to do with religion.

Marrying a divorced person was forbidden by the Church of England at the time, and Queen Elizabeth was the head of the church of England

No it didn’t.
The church might have had something to say about WHERE she married but they had no power over whether she married.
What, in your mind, do you think they had to do with it since you hve said it twice now but as with all of your claims -nothing to back it up .

Bollocks.

I should think it waa a living hell - 2 sons to protect from.the media, knowing the media would be nit picking over everything.. World news... doubt he phoned up someone he hardly ever spoke to and sounded excited.

He sounds a right knobber this Spencer bloke. Is he needing money so writing sensational books.

This. Even if Charles did feel an element of relief, I don't believe this stuff from Spencer. His exes and estranged children don't inspire me with trust...

The church of England would not allow anyone at that time - to marry a divorced person.

They may both be correct in some sense - I was completely devastated when my mum died. Loved her so much.

But there were times in the immediate aftermath when I was absolutely manic with grief and shock and said and did many things that I completely regret: I lost my mind.

(I am not talking awful stuff just a level of hyperactivity and inappropriate levity that grated on others.)

MrsTrellisOgleddCymru · 18/09/2026 22:57

Has Spencer received an unexpected tax bill or needs a wing of his stately pile fixing? One can only assume that's why this sensationalist drivel is being touted. His sister died nearly 30 years ago, he should stop dragging up her memory. I really can't see KC doing what was alleged.

augustuss · 18/09/2026 22:59

Op, my comments and thoughts are -
I don’t care what’s happened such a long time ago. May be he did, may be he didn't.
KC is a hard working royal, passionate about many important causes. He doesnt owe us a perfect private life. Yes, he is a product of a very privileged upbringing but so are Spencer and Diana. They were all very much like each other.

I think the book shouldn’t have been written as it is damaging the image not of a person but a whole kingdom, because of how much Diana is put on a pedestal all around the world.

Is ES publishing this now because he’s trying to cause the death of an already ill king?
Will he be giddy and elated if that happens.

The
Church of England wouldn’t allow anyone to marry a divorced person in a church.
They had NO SAY WHATSOEVER on wether or not Margaret COULD marry,
Margaret did not need permission from the Church to marry a divorced man - they could not stop her marrying anyone who was legally free to marry.
That was down to the government to decide. And decide they did -without any help or intervention from the Church.
I think you need to brush up on your English comprehension and history dearie.
Just to help you -the Church of England has jurisdiction over the Church
The Government has jurisdiction over the Laws of the Land.

Do you understand now?

AlexandraCarrington · 18/09/2026 23:04

It was the government of the day’s decision.

It was Margaret's own decision. The government - including the Queen and I believe the Archbishop - set out the conditions under which they could marry. Margaret herself decided ultimately not to go ahead.

The PM by that time was Anthony Eden, a divorced man, so he was inclined to be sympathetic.

But Margaret and PT had spent some time apart, Margaret was a bit older, and I think it's suggested her first infatuation had faded a bit.

I already understood. It's you who needs to read up on your history dear.

The Government at the time were heavily influenced by the Church of England.

The Government at the time made their decision not to approve Margaret's marriage BECAUSE the Church of England would not recognise the marriage.

From online: Winston Churchill informed the Queen that both his Cabinet and the Dominion prime ministers opposed the marriage, and that Parliament would not approve a union unrecognised by the Church of England unless Margaret renounced her rights to the throne.
