I’m not saying they can’t have hated each other. I’m saying that regardless of how you feel about them, if you’ve just had presumably sobbing children distraught at the loss of their mother, you’d have to be a monster to be capable of elation at that point.

It's not alleged that he showed elation in front of the children?

And the PP didn’t say that he did. She said he would have to be a monster to be capable of feeling elation in that situation.

HRHCurmudgeon · 18/09/2026 21:17

I remember having to call relatives to let them know of a close family members unexpected death. The adrenaline was running so high, I might well have seemed ‘giddy’. It’s a fucking hard call to make, especially repeatedly, and there was no National News Story, let alone Stop The Global Press, story in my circs.

I’ve clearly no skin in this royal game and am a Republican but Charles Spencer is out to make a buck from his sisters death. Extremely disgraceful at best…

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 18/09/2026 21:18

My feeling is that Earl Spencer genuinely thought Prince Charles sounded elated and giddy but that a febrile, hyper state caused simply by shock could be misinterpreted.

BrieHugger · 18/09/2026 21:19

Flufffluff11 · 18/09/2026 20:27

Prince Charles didn't express it in saying "Im happy".

Earl Spencer said that Prince Charles just SOUNDED happy.

All that Earl Spencer has said that Prince Charles actually said in words is that Prince Charles said 'we will forget Diana soon enough'

Have you heard King Charles talk? He’s so softly spoken and very measured even when in a jovial situation. It seems highly unlikely he was sounding giddy / happy / excited, especially with his background of being stoic and calm.

Charles Spencer may have been a nice brother but he’s been a dreadful husband and not a great father. I suspect he has some debts to settle or another wife to pay off.

BugJuice · 18/09/2026 21:19

The sad thing is, whether it’s true or not the only people he’s really hurting by releasing this is his nephews. Charles doesn’t give a shit, it won’t affect the rest of his reign.

Monster, no.

Cruel yes. And he is capable of being cruel

Diana said that Prince Charles was cruel to her about her friends death, remember. She said that they were in the car on the way to a red carpet. Just before she got out, prince Charles said "oh by the way your friend died"

She said that he chose a moment to tell her that would cause her the most distress.

Isn't this the same loving brother who denied her refuge at Althorp in her last years? Stating the Press interest would be intrusive.

How ironic that he uses the Press at every opportunity, thirty years on to make money from her name.

They weren't speaking at the time she died either.

Both men are vile.

Very fair assessment.

Although Spencer did give an amazing eulogy at Diana's funeral.

Reports from who? Can you give an example

Just look it up, I don't keep notes of these things.

BunfightBetty · 18/09/2026 21:22

Althorp must cost an absolute packet to maintain. I expect Earl Spencer has an eye to the revenue here, and is embellishing outright lying.

I don’t find it remotely credible that Charles would have sounded as giddy as somebody who’d won the lotto. Whatever he thought of Diana, he had to tell his two young sons their mother had tragically and unexpectedly been killed. Full of adrenaline, yes - it’s common for people to laugh as a nervous reaction when overwhelmed by shocking news. He wouldn’t have been ‘elated’ though.

I’m really disgusted with the Earl for alleging this in public, as it shows zero care or regard for his nephews. Bastard.

Prince Charles was extremely jealous of Diana. She was also causing him a lot of stress by writing books about how awful Charles was, she gave tv interviews about his affair. She was publicly embrassing him. I'm sure he did feel relief rather than sadness at her death.

He should have tried to stop himself from sounding giddily happy to others though as it just looks bad.

Edited

How many books did Diana write? How many TV interviews did she give about his affair? Interviews? I remember the one with Martin Bashir. She said, if I remember correctly, that she didn't think that Charles would ever be King. Did you see the interview at the time, Flufffluff? Perhaps you are too young to have done.

Yes diana was looking for a country house and earl Spencer initially agreed, then changed his mind. he said that if she moved in, he was worried about the effect of media intrusion on his children's lives.

A fair point in one way. No one wants the media hounding them. Why didn't Diana just buy her own country retreat. She had millions

I was reading something today, can't remember where, that dismantles that story. He offered her somewhere to live.

Yes I saw it at the time.

People who are writing "I'm old enough to remember diana dying"

We don't have to be that old to remember her dying. She died 29 years ago. An 8 year old would remember watching her funeral. My cousin was 8 at the time and she remembers watching the funeral. So people aged 37 and up really would remember it. I remember watching her funeral. I was about 15 at the time of the funeral - I remember watching it all morning

It's a long, old, soap opera.

Meghan will do something new and controversial. That will be the next act of this play.

Sorry, that was rude and I didn't mean it to be, i was replying quickly while the kettle was boiling. I don't have references for this, but if you look it up it won't be hard to find I'm sure.

She hasn't done anything controversial in years, people just don't like her no matter what she does.

Having seen him on the news tonight he looks like someone full of anger, malice and hate. He’s had long enough to air his claims and if it really happened he wouldn’t be trying to make money off the back of it because he would have said something sooner.

Who by? Are you mentally unwell? Who does that?

KC was trained from birth to not show emotion. Act in a very measured way. Never show what he really thinks

The chances that he was so out of control elated he phoned her family to let them know how happy he was seems really remote to me, whatever his actual feelings may have been.

This^
and to be honest there were a lot of practicalities around funeral itself. and publicity so I doubt that Charles was happy and excited. He probably ( just probably ) was relieved in a way inside but no way he would show it to Spencer.

Are you mentally unwell yourself? Because you're not making any sense at all.

Read what I wrote again.

I wrote that he DIDN'T do that.

Oh no I didn’t mean that. I just meant that I find it hard to believe he’d be elated by something that caused such devastation to his children. I just don’t believe he’d be around their grief and then go and be giddy on the phone.

And that’s not some strong defence of him, I think it’s a pretty low bar for a parent - don’t be elated by your children losing their other parent.

and he's got another divorce to pay for of course

The last Royal before Charles who had tried to marry a divorced person - was not allowed to.

Princess Margaret could have married Peter Townsend but I believe she would have had to give up being a princess. She made a choice. I was a small girl at the time and I remember people talking about it and a picture of her on the front of the paper, looking very sad.
For good or ill, the RF is linked to the Church of England, unless one day they are split up.
The C of E's rules might have changed a bit over the years. Certainly their practices had. By the time Charles married Camilla the C of E was not marrying divorced people, I think, but was blessing marriages. So C and C were legally married and then they went to a church to have the marriage blessed and HMQE2 went to the second ceremony, the blessing.
