Buckingham Palace have said they won't be commenting further on the book. But I expect plenty of others will be and it's not even published yet so I started this second thread. I really liked Diana and thought she got treated shabbily by Charles. But really writing a book of gripes 30 years later is not on imho. I noticed on the news Harry declined to comment on it. Sensible decision for once.

We really don't know what happened behind closed doors but I always thought that the photoshoot/press call they did at Balmoral after the honeymoon did come across as two people very definitely attracted to each other and rather 'loved up'. I hope that she at least had some happy years in her marriage.

There are plenty of photos from the first few years of their marriage showing a definite affection and chemistry there. I’ve also seen film footage of them giving an interview shortly after their marriage (a recent Netflix documentary that was just real footage from her life with no narrative voiceover) - they were flirting with each other as they answered the questions. It was quite eye opening, given everything we think we know about them.

Yes, Serenster and Buttered Toast. I am on record on some thread or another, as saying that I think they were all right at the start.

Being on a predominantly pro royal forum means it’s expected that someone would think the royal family had Diana assassinated?
im confused!

This was my reply.

Again, not what i wrote.

That poster said I'm the only person on this thread to believe this - that the Royal Family may have killed diana.

I then wrote, well as we are on a pro- Royal forum, that is to be expected.

Then you posted this

It was not in the best interests of the RF for Diana to die young. Her constant stream of romances were getting old, and eventually she would become an aging grandmother. Having her die young and beautiful was much more destructive to them. Also, the RF are not monsters.

I know anti-Trumpers who are convinced their phone is tapped, etc. Paranoia is not restricted to the UK.

So why did Dimbleby say that 'there was huge relief in the palace after Diana died'

No I find your posts completely nonsensical to be honest 🤷‍♀️

Likewise

Maybe because they weren't on edge all the time, wondering what she was going to do next, partly because it would reflect on the whole RF, although she wasn't a part of it any more, and possibly because of how her behaviour would affect her sons.

Still not nice though. The woman had died.

Here's a photo of Diana sitting in the back of a car with both her sisters and none of them are wearing seat belts.

What great photos, you just want to laugh with them ! Their mother is sitting in the front with her seatbelt on.

It's perfectly possible to feel a sense of relief when someone dies, for a variety of reasons and in some cases, for very loving reasons.

Again, we only have David Dimbleby’s opinion on this. I’m not sure about his knowledge of the RF or the Palace - I know his brother Jonathan was close to Charles.

My reaction to all these comments - Spencer’s, Dimbleby’s - is that they are mainly opinion. Interesting, but not sufficient to condemn someone on their own, especially if you admit that some of these people might have ulterior motives.

Earl Spencer has a close tie with Harry. Harry is back in the UK, Spencer has a book on the royals come out. Bet they are in this together.

Diana was never particularly bright and was brought up just to marry into the royal family. She was high maintenance but liked to play up to the media. If she had been hanging around with Egyptian criminals (the Al-Fayed's) and had worn a seat belt she would still be alive together. Some accountability for her poor decision making needs to be acknowledged.

There is a really old interview with Charles Spencer, where he is asked about his relationship with Harry and William, the article points out that neither William or Harry attend Spencer family events , he answered he doesn’t see William much but regularly sees Harry, they were probably 19 and 21 at that time.

I guess it’s no coincidence that both Harry and Charles are the two who have exploited and profited from Diana’s death.

There is somewhat of an irony that Charles Spencer wanted the Diana memorial fund wound down and closed relatively early on as said he didn’t want her memory to be commercialised.

He had many arguments with his sister, who was chair of the fund, about the direction of the fundraising and not wanting anything to sully Diana’s memory…

upinaballoon · 19/09/2026 19:42

Diana was busy doing things. She was constantly in the newspapers. She had chased several men. Is it possible that some unpleasant pupils at Eton had said unflattering things about her to her sons? Is it possible that her sons loved her but could see that she might be a bit embarrassing for them? Were the servants at the palaces always having to turn the papers over so that the boys didn't see what criticisms some of the tabloids were throwing at her that last summer? It could be that the secretaries had to use some of their time discussing her with the Queen because they had to be in touch with D over seeing the boys. Has
D. Dimbleby said that members of the RF and the whole household were jubilant that she'd died, or has he said that there was a sense of relief?

CoffeeCantata · 19/09/2026 19:49

Leaving aside any other issues with the book, I think it’s absolutely awful as a memoir and memorial of Diana, which is what Spencer said he was writing.

I take the juicy excerpts I’ve read on here with a bit more salt than some but even if they are true - and actually ESPECIALLY if they’re true, they make a rotten memorial to her.

I think Spencer is acting in bad faith and is exploiting her memory for money and to take revenge. Is that what D would have wanted. Considering the fallout for her 2 sons? I don’t think so.

Ok so given that we know that there were photographers there on motorbikes, what makes you think a white light from a motorbike would be part of an assassination?

Because the witness said that he thought the two men were 'hitmen'.

A motorist who was driving in the Paris tunnel seconds before the crash that killed Diana testified on Monday that he saw a blinding "flash of light" just before the collision, then noticed two men on a motorcycle gesture to each other as if to indicate "job done" after surveying the wreckage.
'The light was not directed towards me. It was directed towards the car which was behind.' —François Levistre, inquest witness
François Levistre told the British inquest into the 1997 death of the late Princess of Wales that he was driving through the tunnel the night of Aug. 31 when he spotted two men riding on one motorcycle, just ahead of the black Mercedes-Benz carrying the princess and her boyfriend, Dodi Al Fayed. Levistre said there were no other vehiclesaroundas he watched the motorcycle overtake the Mercedes in the Alma tunnel.
Suddenly, "there was this major white flash of the motorbike," Levistre said, adding the light was so bright that it poured into his vehicle. "The light was not directed towards me. It was directed towards the car which was behind," he said.

Al Fayed and the chauffeur, Henri Paul, were also both killed in the crash.
'Thought they were hit men'
Levistre said he pulled over afterward and watched the scene from his rearview mirror. He said he saw one of the men descend from the motorbike, walk over to the crumpled car to look inside, and then make a two-handed gesture to the motorcyclist as if to say, "Job done."
When asked if there was a reason why he did not exit the car himself to check on the crash, Levistre replied: "Fear."
He added, "Like I said, I thought they were hit men," referring to the men on the motorcycle.

This is from the BBC today

''Veteran broadcaster David Dimbleby, who led the BBC's coverage of Diana's funeral, said it seemed "odd" Earl Spencer would release the book now.

"Why 30 years later for God's sake you should do it... you have to ask him," he said on Radio 4's Today programme, adding he wished the appetite for the "cycle of gossip" would decline and instead that focus would shift to what kind of monarchy the country needed''.

Charles was her ex so I don’t know what he was doing trying to take over .He even refused to let Diana’s mother see her body . He had no right to do that .

The state funeral was only as a result of public outcry and criticism. They were busy isolating her and smearing her ( the usual Windsor go to )

The queen even tried to return Diana’s HRH after her death no doubt to curry favour when they realised the public mood .

So what if Spencer wanted a private funeral ? He has no time for the Windsors .
No many do any more .

Too bad old Charlie Spencer had no time for his sister when she was alive. To try to take over as he did after her death and to bury her where no one can visit except for whom he deems allowed makes me thing he had a weird, strange attachment to her. It's like he wants to hoard her for himself.

I wonder if old Charlie Spencer has found his way out of a bottle yet? Oh wait, he now says he has been sober 6 months. LOL! Why do I think he is lying?
I wonder if he was drunk at Diana's funeral? My eight-ball says, "Yes, indeed".

Are you in your twenties and working a boring service job? Asking someone's age in a rude manner and the constant posting on MN leads me to think that of you.

Boring service job? And you are commenting on someone being rude.

MurphysColeslaw · 19/09/2026 20:32

On a bit of a tangent.
I was no particular Diana fan, but I do hope there’s a special place in Hell for Martin Bashir.

Yes in hindsight I did think, how could Diana be so naive as to believe Martin Bashir. But we know what he is like now. At the time he was portraying himself as a respected journalist

Then Michael Jackson fell for it as well. Apparently Martin Bashir pitched MJ a documentary that would be about the whole Jackson family. MJ said no. Martin Bashir said 'but princess Diana trusted me, you can trust me' and showed mj notes that diaa had written to him saying he was great

He was very manipulative

Makes one want to know what they were laughing about. I see the front seat driver and passenger have their seat belts on.

I wish Diana and Dodi had both put on their seat belts. Not positive it would have helped but maybe it would have. I would have enjoyed seeing Diana be a grandmother, with her love of all children.

If they didnt wear one, I can't understand why they didn't wear one.

Would any of us not wear a seat belt on a high speed road going into a tunnel?
