Buckingham Palace have said they won't be commenting further on the book. But I expect plenty of others will be and it's not even published yet so I started this second thread. I really liked Diana and thought she got treated shabbily by Charles. But really writing a book of gripes 30 years later is not on imho. I noticed on the news Harry declined to comment on it. Sensible decision for once.

Makes one want to know what they were laughing about. I see the front seat driver and passenger have their seat belts on.

I wish Diana and Dodi had both put on their seat belts. Not positive it would have helped but maybe it would have. I would have enjoyed seeing Diana be a grandmother, with her love of all children.

I would love to know too ! It’s such a great set of photos.

Apparently they were stuck in a traffic jam in London after leaving the Opera, there is another photo of a car beside them, with 3 men staring at them, don’t know if that was bodyguards or random people surprised at seeing them stuck in traffic next to them.

Because the witness said that he thought the two men were 'hitmen'.

A motorist who was driving in the Paris tunnel seconds before the crash that killed Diana testified on Monday that he saw a blinding "flash of light" just before the collision, then noticed two men on a motorcycle gesture to each other as if to indicate "job done" after surveying the wreckage.
'The light was not directed towards me. It was directed towards the car which was behind.' —François Levistre, inquest witness
François Levistre told the British inquest into the 1997 death of the late Princess of Wales that he was driving through the tunnel the night of Aug. 31 when he spotted two men riding on one motorcycle, just ahead of the black Mercedes-Benz carrying the princess and her boyfriend, Dodi Al Fayed. Levistre said there were no other vehiclesaroundas he watched the motorcycle overtake the Mercedes in the Alma tunnel.
Suddenly, "there was this major white flash of the motorbike," Levistre said, adding the light was so bright that it poured into his vehicle. "The light was not directed towards me. It was directed towards the car which was behind," he said.

Al Fayed and the chauffeur, Henri Paul, were also both killed in the crash.
'Thought they were hit men'
Levistre said he pulled over afterward and watched the scene from his rearview mirror. He said he saw one of the men descend from the motorbike, walk over to the crumpled car to look inside, and then make a two-handed gesture to the motorcyclist as if to say, "Job done."
When asked if there was a reason why he did not exit the car himself to check on the crash, Levistre replied: "Fear."
He added, "Like I said, I thought they were hit men," referring to the men on the motorcycle.

But this was debunked in the inquiry and even Levestre’s own wife contradicted what he said, as a pp pointed out to you with the text from the inquest

I wouldn't say it was debunked in that they could prove it definitely didn't happen.

The inquest just decided that it was an accident

Boring service job? And you are commenting on someone being rude.

No, I'm commenting during a break on a boring day at my public service job.

So why did Dimbleby say that 'there was huge relief in the palace after Diana died'

He's a reporter and he may not like the RF. Richard Kay will always be pro- Diana. Richard Eden appears to dislike everyone except W Catherine& and the Edinburgh's and Anne. They are people and have preferences.

But I’m wondering how he knows what the queen’s response was 🤷‍♀️

Didn't his dad work for the family at one point

bluegreygreen · 19/09/2026 21:12

His father was the Queen's equerry until 1954.

i haven't seen an explanation for how he knew what the Queen's response was.

I should imagine she was a bit of a disgrace as far as things went she refused protection constantly put herself in danger flaunted relationship after relationship called the press for photos look what she did to tiggy and to people's marriages she was a definite case for being shut away in the tower for her own good (im only half joking) she was a slow moving car crash that everyone was watching (poor choice of words im aware cant think of another way to describe it) in some areas she was hated some areas she was loved she went from being a sweet and loved lady to a very marmite character almost overnight, I remember seeing her opening a local facility there was helicopters press cheering etc we went from that to breaking of multiple marriages willing swimsuit shots calls to press for photos and the headlines were not always good ones

Well if it was an accident, it wasn’t a hit

Yes, in the 50s. He had been dead for a few years by the time Diana died.

No, I find that hard to believe. The late Queen - if she said anything so disparaging - would certainly not have done so in the earshot of anyone who would repeat it.
More fiction, I think!

bluegreygreen · 19/09/2026 21:53

Yes in hindsight I did think, how could Diana be so naive as to believe Martin Bashir. But we know what he is like now. At the time he was portraying himself as a respected journalist

He was also introduced to her by her brother, which probably swayed her to some extent.
I have seen documented that following an initial meeting with both of them Charles then tried to persuade Diana that Bashir was talking rubbish, but by that stage she was believing him.

That was what the inquest decided. It doesn't mean that it was right.

I'm astounded that anyone would think that because an authority figure gives a decision on something, that it must be right.

Many people have been convicted for crimes that they didn't commit, for example

Bashir was definitely crafty and manipulative.

In one way, thats his job, to get a way in some how so he gets his exclusivs story.

Never trust a journalist

Most of the public supported Diana.

The flaunting herself stuff was negative pr from the palace. How dare this widowed woman date and wear a bikini. It was incredibly misogynistic pr.

Yes she had affairs with married men and should not have. But you are wrong to think this made people turn against Diana.

OneLilacHedgehog · 19/09/2026 22:21

I think the royal family are finding charles spencer harder to deal with than other critical anecdotes. Charles Spencer is aristocracy, very well connected, and very rich. It's harder for the palace to tell lies about him.

It's clear Charles is being honest. And that Charles Windsor has not even denied the accusations directly, instead calling Charles Spencer crazy. That was a terrible decision to issue that statement. It makes it clear Charles Windsor did say those things.

I never wrote that I fully trust what he says.

We were just discussing it. Like everything we can only look at documentaries, books, and articles about the Royal Family and then discuss it.

We can never know the actual full truth

Why would you introduce the opinion of David Dimbleby if journalists are never to be trusted? And then challenge people to explain his (according to you) untrustworthy claim?

It has nothing to do with authority figures and everything to do with common sense. There is no conspiracy. It was an accident. Because that is what the evidence says after it has been examined. You see what you want to see when in fact the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. You do know that conspiracies would involve a lot of people keeping the same secret and this is really difficult to maintain? Which is why a convoluted explanation for something is vanishingly unlikely to be the correct one

Im laughing at you thinking you have a 'got you' moment about me

As I already wrote (read the thread) , I didn't write anywhere that what Dimbleby said is absolutely true.

I simply reported on this thread what he said. It's relevant as we are discussing the new book about Diana.

His recent statement, "the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory." I.e. Charles Spencer is saying I said those things because he was crazy with grief.
It's part of the palace playbook to call detractors crazy.
