Buckingham Palace have said they won't be commenting further on the book. But I expect plenty of others will be and it's not even published yet so I started this second thread. I really liked Diana and thought she got treated shabbily by Charles. But really writing a book of gripes 30 years later is not on imho. I noticed on the news Harry declined to comment on it. Sensible decision for once.

The evidence doesn’t stack up to support your theory, that’s what people are challenging you on.

You are welcome to believe whatever you like but you should be able to back it up. Someone putting something in a letter isn’t enough.

Poor Tiggy was blameless, but was targeted by Diana who believed that she and Charles were having an affair, and that Tiggy had aborted the resulting baby, because Martin Bashir told her so.

The BBC ended up having to pay damages to Tiggy for the damage they caused to her.

No, but given the two claims were made together (the car crash would be so Charles could marry Tiggy) and the latter claim was completely fantastical, it rather undermines the idea that this was a belief she could reasonably have held.

And that's your prerogative. But the facts are that the Met police inquiry and the coroners inquest both ruled out a "laser." And crash reconstruction experts concluded that the Mercedes was out of control before it entered the Alma Tunnel and that camera flashes, either before it entered the tunnel or whilst it was inside the tunnel, would not have altered the outcome.

Perhaps explain to your elderly mother that the Spencers aren't particularly reliable on certain things, e.g. Diana's sister claim that Diana always wore her seatbelt when there are photos of Diana sitting next to both her sisters in the back of the car and none of them are wearing seatbelts even though it's been mandatory to wear seatbelts in the back of cars for decades.

You can also point out to your mother that if the Spencers genuinely believed that the royal family killed Diana, Earl Spencer would have put that in his book.

The royal murder theory was invented by slimebag Mohamed Al-Fayed, who didn't want to accept that it was his own drunk employee who caused the deaths of his son and Diana.

I guess things like the actual investigation and 6000-page report by a foreign police force that found nothing to back up a murder theory won't convince the people who hold these tin-hat theories.

Might be - the stats should tell us. It’s hard for younger people to understand what Elizabeth II meant to her generation. They’d been through a terrible war and austerity went on for years even afterwards. Then a pretty young queen came to the throne and this chimed with the post-war optimism. My mum was younger than her but I’m sure she felt tat Elizabeth had been a reassuring constant in the background of her life.

i used to sneer when I was younger but now I completely get that wish for continuity. It’s not the same now, obvs, but I hope that a slimmer monarchy, like those of Scandinavia, will remain for my lifetime.

This is literally from an episode of Spooks, where a barmy ex agent is convinced that the security services killed Diana and says she will blow up London (or something) if they don’t provide her with proof. So they hurriedly come up with a nonsensical way it could have been done. Great to see Spooks used as a source, I’m a big fan of Peter Firth 👏👏
