Buckingham Palace have said they won't be commenting further on the book. But I expect plenty of others will be and it's not even published yet so I started this second thread. I really liked Diana and thought she got treated shabbily by Charles. But really writing a book of gripes 30 years later is not on imho. I noticed on the news Harry declined to comment on it. Sensible decision for once.

I agree younger generations not interested..

I don’t think that makes it more likely the royals will be booted out though.

That would involve the uninterested people getting interested enough in a change to campaign for it and then mostly likely vote for it. I think whilst people are considerably less interested in the royals, I don’t think people are interested enough in a change yet.

Harry’s return just before its publication after visiting his uncle recently? I don’t know?
just doesn’t feel coincidental.

But for what reason though? He stays with his uncle. Uncle says ' my books coming out in September ' Harry said ' I'm coming home' I'm just not sure why one thing would lead to the other or what one thing works have to do with the other. Books taken years to write and publish. What do you think Harry is going to do? go on tour with CS?

'Admire Earl Spencer taking on the establishment'. Is that an order from you? Please don't tell me who I should admire.

No it should read I admire.

MurphysColeslaw · 18/09/2026 20:03

@JenRummy Why now? CS was really angry after Diana died, he’s a nasty piece of work it would appear.
He hasn’t sat on this for 30 years.

Looks like he has imho. Why not now? What evidence have you that CS is a nasty piece of work? Bit of an unsubstantiated leap.

I just feel something is off.

When you watch him in the video with Kuensberg I believe him.

When I watch him in that video I find what he's saying even more implausible. Who remembers things so exactly 29 years on, with all the added intonations and specific phrases? And his insistence that "I'm telling the truth", as though during such a highly charged and emotional situation as a tragic death and the immediate days after everyone involved wasn't highly flustered, confused, not sure what the best thing to do, not even sure what they're saying. People are saying all sorts of things in those situations, they may not even know what they're saying or what they really think or even be aware exactly what's going on. People are in a stupour. And we all saw the then Prince Charles devestated as he went to get Diana's body along with her sisters - this after he had to break the news to his and Diana's sons that their mother had died. And we're meant to believe that Charles was elated?!

That clip from Charles Spencer's speech during Diana's funeral. I always found it weird that the target of his ire was the royal family and not the press. Like, why not be critical of the press, as Diana was. His speech also contradicts what he's saying today because then he was implying that the royal family assumed that they were be the guardians of Diana's legacy, but he was saying that her blood family were the ones who were going to honour her legacy. And what exactly have Diana's blood family done in all these years to honour her legacy? Nothing.

Flufffluff11 · 18/09/2026 20:42

More snippets from the book coming out.

Earl Spencer said that when the Queen heard about Diana's car crash, her first response was "what is she up to now"

Andrew has been thrown out and the soap opera is not coming from the royal family.

The royal family can continue forever really. One day Charles will no longer be King and William will be King. Then it will be George. Somehow, I doubt anyone will try this drama with William.

The Royal Family is all soap opera. If there was no soap opera there would be no interest in them at all.

On a par with suggesting that the 9th Earl Spencer is taking on the establishment.

Hardly, any criticism of the King is an individual challenging the establishment by definition. Making daft unrelated statements about signing Althorpe over to the public is left of field.

I actually think our memores are heightened at important moments.

I don't remember what my colleague said to me last year for example.

But i remember word for word some hurtful things that my uncle said to me after my dad died ten years ago

CoffeeCantata · 18/09/2026 20:44

Flufffluff11 · 18/09/2026 19:29

Because he loves his sister more than he cares about Prince Charles obviously.

If Diana was my sister, I'd probably write a book about her.

Misses my point rather.

He hasn’t just written a book, has he? He’s twisted the knife sadistically with no care for his nephews.

Are you saying that if your enemy of 30 years ago was dying of cancer you’d still put the boot in?

Nice!

CathyorClaire · 18/09/2026 20:44

I think even non Royalists respected her

Can you explain why you think this is the case?

Ferriswheel101 · 18/09/2026 20:46

I think even if you have unresolved anger at someone, there is a line when someone is unwell or going through treatments that you let sleeping dogs lie or look for a private resolution of the issues. Harry and Spencer don't seem to know this.

BunnyBunbunbun · 18/09/2026 20:46

Since Charles Spencer likes to judge King Charles as a husband, it's only fair that we consider what Charles Spencer is like as a husband too. And this is just from ex-wife number one (of three ex-wives). He sounds appalling.

"Spencer’s marriage to the former model Victoria Lockwood fell apart three years ago. But only last week did the two parties engage in bitter court battle to decide whether their divorce should proceed in Britain or in South Africa, where both now reside. Lockwood, who wants the case moved back to Britain, claimed that the couple did not expect to live permanently in South Africa and that Spencer had lied about his reasons for moving the family there in the first place. He said, she said, that the move was to allow their children to escape the glare of celebrity and to grow up with a sense of normality. She contends it was really designed to cover his pursuit of Chantal Collopy, a South African whose husband eventually sued Spencer for “enticement and alienation” of his wife’s affection. Lockwood’s brief describes Spencer as a serial adulterer whose unfaithfulness began less than six months into their 1989 marriage (the British journalist with whom he had that initial liaison sold the story of their affair to the tabloid News of the World in 1991). Lockwood’s lawyer said Spencer had strung together as many as 12 love affairs. He was most recently linked to the fashion editor and former Calvin Klein model Josie Borain."

"Spencer denies the allegations of rampant adultery, with one of his lawyers sneering that Lockwood’s team could dig up the names of just three of the earl’s alleged dozen mistresses. Meanwhile, the earl, who has always been public about his wife’s anorexia and neuroses, has briefed the court on Lockwood’s alcohol and drug dependency, stating bluntly, in response to her demands for a sizable settlement, that “I am most fearful that should Victoria receive significantly more money from me than she does at present, she will be unable to resist the lure of the substances to which she is/was addicted and/or unprincipled individuals who may seek to take advantage of her.” He cited his fears for their four children in such a scenario, even though Lockwood says she has recovered from substance abuse."

I remember exactly what my mother said when she told me about my father's sudden and traumatic death. I remember the car journey to view his body, the music playing in the radio and exactly what the hospital room looked like. I remember so many details from that day.

We don't need to be interested in the royal family beyond the things they do as part of their duties. The media obsession with the royals is ridiculous.

Because of her work around hiv and landmines. She made a real difference and took on controversial causes.
It would be like Catherine visiting asylum seeker charities today and sympathetically highlighting their stories.

If you're in shock you don't sound excited and giddy and happy.

Edited

Both of them were in shock and grief.

I have been in the position where an ex-business partner wildly misinterpreted what we said in a closure meeting. He interpreted it as us announcing that we weren't going to pay on the closure terms agreed, and concocted a ransomware attack on us on the grounds that he thought we were out to get him.

There was no evidence we could present to him - minuted meetings, timestamped emails, date stamped letters, follow up emails etc, that could convince him that we had not said what he imagined.

And that was over a matter of five or six months, not thirty years, and nobody was suffering shock or grief.

We did a whole module in my history degree about the fallibility of first hand witness accounts of stressful events.

Well if that's the case then Charles’s seeming rebuttal (though he never denied the veracity of the statement directly) is equally suspect and we are down to whose side are you on.

The latest excerpts (haven't yet read them) apparently have Harold headlining as 'out of control'.

It's hard to keep up with the ever switching targets.

Didn't king Charles also contribute to a book, and also go on a TV documentary and say that he had an affair?

Yes he certainly has.

I can remember exactly where I was, who I was with, and even what I ate for breakfast that Sunday morning. So if you are Earl Spencer speaking directly to Prince Charles about the death of your own sister, in the immediate aftermath of her death, and you are a historian who makes a habit of keeping notes, then surely you would remember that conversation in considerable detail.

I think the quote related to the grasping 'firm first' E2?
