Breaking news in the Daily Mail. Duke and Duchess of Sussex's children 'removed from school after two days' mol.im/a/16130877 via https://dailym.ai/android

I do wonder if there is actually any school that will be able to meet their expectations in regard to security. I'm interested to see how it all plays out.

I don't have any opinion on the Sussexes, but I have lived in and around Oxford for decades and, if the rumours are correct about their chosen school, I have a lot of sympathy with their issues with the commute and safe access. That part of town is notoriously awful for traffic and has a very high concentration of schools, making the school run beyond painful.

It is also in a rather tricky location with regard to exit routes - I would not want to have to remove a high-profile target from that area at speed in an emergency - there are very limited access routes and these are often heavily congested. If the decision to move was recent, it is possible that their security detail did not have the opportunity to assess the route/contingency plans during the school rush. The area is very much quieter when schools are closed - resembles the Hunger Games during term time. I can see how the reality of the situation may have dawned on everyone on day one.

They also have the option of lots of lovely, rural Prep schools nearer their home and which are likely to have much simpler access arrangements - some of the more remote ones will have multiple points of access to the grounds which could be used discreetly for anyone with a security concern - and could be used to evacuate at speed. I know it sounds ridiculous to most of us, but Harry has been subject to threats from hostile actors - they do have to consider, and plan for, the worst-case-scenario, no matter how indulgent it looks (I work in the security industry - access routes are a key vulnerability for any target and when you are committed to regular routine arrival/departure times and one point of exit, you increase the risk significantly).

I feel for them - it must feel awful to make such a big decision for your family and then have to change it so quickly.

How useless a security detail do you have to be not to wonder if term time traffic would make a difference to the journey though? Wouldn’t you think they would ask that very basic question of the school? Private schools everywhere in the country tend to suffer from congestion because there are not generally school bus services that can be used. Although any school, private or otherwise, gets busy during the school run. It’s a pretty major oversight not to have taken this in to account

Didnt realise it was that unusual. Just class name and the kids in that class. It was in a diary given to all pupils and parents

Good grief. If it was a state school it would trigger serious repercussions. I really question what goes on in some of these private schools. Crazy.

Reports are that Lilibet and H were seen at a Reception classroom, so it would appear she has been deferred a year as she is already five but summer born. Wonder if similar has applied to Archie, making a transition from US system.

@IcedPurpleI never suggested his fears of the press were rational but ime it is not unknown for photographers to stand outside the entrance of a school if they know higher profile/celebrity families are attending. Probably more true of minor celebs whose agents tip them off! The ig reel seemed odd timing with all this going on (and who books a media person to come along on a casual family country walk, any more than on a ski slope)

I admire the royal family, including Harry/megan even though they are outcasts somewhat

Why do you admire Harry and Meghan?

Really? Can you think of any recent examples where the children of celebrities have been photographed coming and going from school? Certainly no British publication would look at them, so it would seem a pretty poor use of a photographer's time.

In any case, photographers may be unpleasant and intrusive but are not in themselves a security threat requiring taxpayer funded protection.

This is exactly what I think this has been all about. A factory reset, if you will, to the time immediately before “Megxit”. They have come over and deliberately caused chaos in order to go back and have something new to moan about: the hostile UK press and the royal family treating them badly, and the kids being shunned by their nasty aunt and uncle. Victimhood is their currency, and they had more or less run out of anything to complain about. Probably we will have an Oprah style reboot interview and Spare Vol 2. Pair of arseholes.

edit to add: this bad behaviour was predictable and I wish Charles had never given them
a foot in the door with the Highgrove tea. But now there is no doubt their intentions are malevolent, he needs to do a bit more to distance the working royal family from this pair. Starting with taking them off the website.

Edited

Totally agree with their intentions, but is there really any appetite for their whiny grousing any more? Oprah got badly burnt last time, I doubt she’d want a rehash.

I still think that means security didn't do due diligence.

The first day or days back at secondary here can be bad for traffic on main road - it's not unpredicatable it happens every year - same with last location with primary school bin day was horric for thsoe who drove or where I went to seocndary school one road with three secondaries down it - it should only take a few questions to school or locals to work out.

I can understand they have secuity concerns and there may well be real issues with this route and school - I just can't see why this has come as a surprise to point young kids after a huge move have to do another first day at new school - it must be hugely unsettling for the kids.

No, they’ve been pretty much universally derided (laughed at, tbh) with this latest stunt.

If your theory is right about H throwing hand grenades at The Firm; it could be that he has resorted to that because his father and brother won’t actually pick up the phone when he calls like normal people.

Nothing will ever resolve unless they actually thrash it out together. Or are they planning on this saga continuing throughout William’s reign too? Even if they hate Harry’s guts, the best move pragmatically speaking, would be to reconcile.

It’s not that difficult to stop the soap opera. It’s interesting that they don’t.

The Firm I reckon don’t want it to end because it is drawing press attention away from other members of the family, especially from AMW, and his impending charges. If charges are ever made of course.

There seems to be a current tendency to diminish Harry's egregious behaviour over the past few years, and to suggest that this has all been a public family disagreement that could be resolved if people would only sit down and talk about it.
The truth is considerably different.

Harry has repeatedly, publicly, attacked the Head of State and accused him of overstepping his constitutional boundaries.
He has repeatedly attempted to pressurise HM Government and independent professional committees.
He has repeatedly maligned HM Courts and recently personally vilified one of HM independent judges.

This is all entirely separate to his horrendous behaviour to his family.

Both the Family and the family are unlikely to have very much to do with him for some considerable time.

I ask again: How did they manage the school run in California? Nobody has been able to tell me why it's so incredibly dangerous for them in the Cotswolds, but California was fine?

I agree with this.
I don't like to think this, but it does seem that the couple are using the children's current and supposed vulnerability in going out to school as a leverage to gain paid for security in the UK.
They had security in California, but it was paid by them.
Of course schools are not safer there than in the UK, but in the UK, they feel they have a chance of having security paid for.
They are not behaving privately, they are right on the edge of being very public about their children.

They prefer to keep the children's faces away from the camera, but are not as careful about keeping their location private.
Foolish? I think so, when we know other members of the RF are living quietly and discreetly and are not actively seeking outside attention, as that is the hallmark of the RF, but definitely not H&M's way, and this is a large part of the problem.

I think there is the likelihood that the access routes to and from that specific school would present a risk. The job of their security team is to imagine the worst case scenario and map out their response. If one of the children was to be targeted - entering or exiting the car, or while stationary in traffic - or if the children needed to be extracted at speed as the result of a confirmed threat, could it be done safely and with a limited risk to the public? Could they get those cars out fast - and could the emergency services arrive at speed. Knowing that part of town - narrow roads - many one-way, densely populated, tree cover, at least three large schools in close proximity and severe congestion - emergency extraction by vehicle at certain times of the day would be slow. I don't know their California setup, but I'm guessing that the winding backstreets of Oxford present a different logistical challenge!

Such a lot of weird shit going on this with this pair. None of it makes any sense and it seems most people want them to shut the fuck up and live quietly. Which was what they claimed to want. I used to really like them and celebrated their wedding. Now I cannot stand the constant lies and whinging. Anyone who gets involved with them in any way is mad.

Me too - like most of the country I thought M would be a wonderful asset to the RF - how wrong I was!
Somehow she has managed single handedly to bring out the very worst in H and I just expect more drama, tantrums lies, upset etc etc from both of them.
Part of me does not believe they should have security but I think RAVEC will cave in.
It was lead news on GMTV this morning but not the other ‘news’ channels - I checked.
Very disappointed in GMTV especially when you think of all the more important stuff going on in the UK and the world.

Yes, I don't disagree - they've been let down somewhere on that decision-making journey. I work 'in' the security industry - I am not a specialist - and those access routes would make me do a double-take. However, I expect the extent of the problem requires local knowledge - and it doesn't seem like they either had time or opportunity to seek that.

Why Should KC and PW bury the hatchet with HAM? They have zero obligation to thrash it out with someone who did a tour of the worldwide media and said horrid, unproven things about them for tabloid consumption. There was no proof to any of HAM's claims and The Royals were not about to get in a he said she said war, as HAM very well knew.

I think PW has a big pair of brass balls for refusing to engage with his brother and his awful wife. Don't be pressured into forgiving people who treat you like shit just because they are faaaaamily.

Exactly. Everyone has a right to protect their peace, and if that means grey rocking the batshit side of the family even when they try to provoke a reaction endlessly…..so be it.

Why not? As I said above, unless there is something we don't know about, they had all the time, money and resources in the world to plan the trip. What on earth prevented them from engaging the services of local security experts? They are responsible for their children's well being and security, and they have failed them. They don't deserve any sympathy.

They want what they can't have! Did we ever see Princess Margaret's children waving from the balcony or in carriages, except for their weddings? No - they weren't high enough up the pecking order - and this is precisely the position which will be occupied by those kids when William becomes King. They need to come to terms with it.

But I think it’s more clear cut than that. There are 2 reasons why the Sussex children won’t be able to do those “royalling” things - the carriage rides and balcony appearances:

  • HAM have rejected royal life and poured contempt on it, and the work done by KC, W&C. They left (something they seem to have forgotten), saying they wanted freedom for themselves and their children. There’s no going back and they need to accept that.
  • children have to be brought up to “royal”. They need to sit through formal events and long church services and know how to greet and converse with all kinds of people. If their parents have opted out, this can’t happen. Meghan wasn’t brought up to do these things and it showed - eg in her impatience when H talks to members of the public, or her own lack of interest in ordinary people - as well as her always looking for the camera. I doubt all this could be learned later, and anyway, W will cut back on the working royals even more so Archie and Lili will be surplus to requirements.

A look on Google Earth/Street View would show the road layout. I look at Street View if I'm going somewhere I haven't been before, why wouldn't a professional security person?
