Is there any more to be said. I expect there probably is. So I started a new thread. Be interesting to see what their next move is. It's like a game of chess A we getting clarification. I want to know if they'll be doing walkabouts, hospital visits, and so on. Being greeted by dignitaries at home and overseas like they were on their visit to NY and Australia.

Reasons I have read, mostly from American sources. H asked to bring M & they said no and H flounced. W was asked if M could join H and W said no so H flounced. H had a freak-out about 'securidy' and refused to go so they cancelled.

Cancelling a black tie dinner at the OWO at such short notice is unusual so there must be a good reason. Whatever the precise reason, H is the common denominator. Another charity that's benefitting from H's Midas (or ginger) touch, but this one affects W too.

Is nothing these two do without drama? No wonder they lose so many staff.

I tried to find out but as you say different reasons given. Apparently Lady Colin Campbell said it was because not enough tickets sold. (That's a bit of a boring reason.) Someone else said it's because Meghan wanted to take centre stage and give a speech or Harry would pull out if she couldn't so whole thing was cancelled. That's more like it imho. Anyway who knows.

I think the charity work is curious as is Harry;s phrasing. The royal family are public servants. And they make a thing about being in service to the British population. Harry is no longer a working royal and he’s chosen the term he prefers as public figures, so he’s simply removed the word servant and switched it for figure.

which speaks volumes. They are not in service and have no desire to be, so everything they do is about reputation, brand and ultimately boosting their commercial attractiveness. And they fully intended to use charities to enable that, I assume thinking the charity also benefits from the publicity,

however genuinely I’m not sure being associated with them is a positive any more. Yes it brings publicity, but never about the charity, always about them.

where As the royals work very hard to make sure it’s about rhe charity,

its a nuance, but an important one. None of the royals do charity work for publicity for themselves, ever, but for Harry and Megan that’s what it’s about. They don’t go to publicise the charities, they go to publicise themselves. As in Harry’s own words, they want to be public figures. Not public servants.

@Notsosweetcaroline I know rich people who see their purpose as helping charities. For example a local businessman who does a lot of work to help young people through youth groups.

I know royalists maintain the fiction that only the royals do this, but it is not and has never been true. And there are easier ways to get publicity as any celebrity will tell you.

It was said by a family member before his mother died that “Harry was born angry”, how true that is.

It was William and Harry’s nanny who said it, and Lady Glenconnor (Queen Elizabeth II’s close friend and maid of honour) who relayed it during a recent-ish book tour. She’s a fascinating woman.

Do "royalists" maintain that fiction? I've never seen it claimed on here, but I could have missed it, of course.

I agree, she's a really interesting character. Amazing stories.

I have seen posters argue no one but royals have the time to give to charities.
Harry and Meghan are doing exactly what some rich people in the UK already do. It's no different.

How bizarre. We all know that charities rely on ordinary individuals. These people haven't seen charity shops, heard of food banks, seen a soup kitchen?
Also, when the royals do charity work, they actively engage with the non royal people. Like yesterday at the Suicide Prevention initiative, W&K met with Gabby Logan et al. When William visited a homeless project in our town he spoke to all involved, the support staff and the clients. Same with Camilla and the DV projects.
Makes no sense.

Yes, her life story would make a fantastic subject for a series or film.

I've never heard of this claim by the RF ever 🤷‍♀️ How odd! They know from personal experience when they visit these charities. What an odd thing to say.

I do know that many rich and not so rich people support charities without a fanfare but quietly dedicating their time to the cause or showcasing.

@IdaGlossop are you really saying the Sussex should not be able to do any charity work unless Charles agrees?

Is that your understanding of the letter that was issued? Really ?

damnatiomemoriae · 11/09/2026 10:01

I know royalists maintain the fiction that only the royals do this, but it is not and has never been true.

Do royalists maintain that? That doesn’t s quite the statement to make.

I’ve never seen or heard that - here or anywhere else.

I would absolutely love to see an example of it.

Given that you have seen it @OneLilacHedgehog, perhaps you would be kind enough to point me in the right direction to the particular thread.

As for this “ @IdaGlossop are you really saying the Sussex should not be able to do any charity work unless Charles agrees?”

I didn’t see Ida or indeed any other poster suggesting that at all.

I’m starting to think my eyes are broken.

I know! Every single time! The RF understand that that's the basis of so much good work in the UK, which is why they support it.

Well posters “claim” all sorts of misinformed things. Not sure why you would give any credence to these posts or why you would automatically think those posters are “royalists” 🤷‍♀️

PleasantGreenPorcupine · 11/09/2026 10:03

OneLilacHedgehog · 11/09/2026 09:45

I agree it was an odd thing to claim.

Especially as KC had seats reserved at his Coronation for ordinary people who work for different charities in the UK, who he praised in his Christmas speech.
Also, KC, William and Anne regularly do investitures (including of charity workers) and speak to people who work with and lead charities of various types.

I wonder if those people are the H&M fans? Kind of ultra royalists who admire the Sussexes because they are royal, so are above criticism?
I don't know. It seems extraordinarily ignorant.

Mylovelygreendress · 11/09/2026 08:44

I can’t answer for @IdaGlossop but I certainly don’t think that’s what is meant at all . Many of us do charity work( I am off shortly to do another shift at our local Foodbank and tomorrow I am helping in a charity shop) but rather that they can’t expect Royal treatment so no red carpet , bowing and - most importantly- no expenses .
In other words , turn up and do some good !

Here's a rewrite: Harry and Meghan tend to step out of line and behave as if they are representing the monarchy, which, having stepped down as working royals, they never are. In his communication, the king has included an open invitation to charities and other organisations to contact Buckingham Palace if they want to check anything procedurally in connection with Harry and Meghan. He has cleverly made it much more difficult for them to step out of line.

This does tickle me!

I can never quite understand why they are so desperate for H&M to be part of the institution both they and H&M seem to despise.

It just doesn’t make sense.
