King Charles orders Harry and Meghan to be treated like ordinary citizens

Apparently an order has gone out from King Charles saying that Harry and Meghan are to be treated like ordinary citizens as they are not working members of the royal family. That's according to the DM so it must be right. The thought of those two being pleased at being ordinary is too much.

I wonder just how low they will keep their profile and if it's to do with them wishing to be involved in charities. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to set up their own mock royal court.

I think you've misread the letter BP sent to Lords Lieutenant and others clarifying that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be carrying out charity engagements in the capacity of private citizens, not HRHs, and not representing the Crown, and that any questions regarding security are the remit of local police in whatever county they have an engagement.

You're presenting this as some sort of Palace smackdown, @Viviennemary and I don't think that was the spirit in which this letter was intended.

I agree. It's pretty much unprecedented.

And I know some posters are desperately trying to claim that this won't bother the Sussexes in the slightest. I disagree. It puts a spanner in any 'faux royal' shenanigans and also made clear that HRH is not to be used. I also liked the clarification re security, emphasising that it's nothing to do with the Palace.

I've always thought the idea that Charles is indulgent of these two to be way off the mark, and this confirms it.

Yes it’s unprecedented and well done KC 👏👏👏 that’s put them firmly in their place, all this half in half out nonsense has now been clarified that they are private citizens and should be treated as such. As for it not bothering the Sussexes, they have skin as thin as tissue paper, to them this will be a massive humiliation in front of the world, no doubt someone will be on the floor sobbing yet again.

Typical dramatic Daily Fail reader.
There is no ‘ordered’. The letter is a reiteration of what was decided when they became non-working Royals and left the country. No change.

Daily Fail . Ah , haven’t seen that for a while . What next ? Frothing ?

Well, we've had 'spewing bile' and 'vitriol' so why not?

You are absolutely right. There is no change.

Two people had varying recollections/misremembered the agreement.

Everyone else remembered.

Tis but a gentle reminder for those who were struggling with it.

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · 07/09/2026 18:09

I am so happy! Well done KC.
This plus the news that the local government reorganisations have been paused makes this the best news day for ages to me.
Might have to have a cup of tea and a biscuit to celebrate.

A smack down is exactly what it is . Obviously I don’t know however I suspect KC has been made aware of HaM’s plans and is concerned .

The contents of the letter is available for all to read , it can’t be spun one way or another it says what it says.

I am amazed and in awe of the Royal Family in this respect - they happily welcomed a different race into the fold, bestowed titles on the newcomer and her children and received a tonne of ungrateful shite in return. To be accused of racism when you allow your royal son to marry a different race and celebrate it for the world to see? And not demand a public apology after a public accusation? Seriously?

An accusation of racism is entirely appropriate if that was the way the RF felt about the inclusion of MM into the family.

You seem to think this inbred German clan were bestowing a huge honour on someone vastly inferior to them when they 'allowed' her to marry in.

Thegirlwhowent · 07/09/2026 18:10

According to the DM so it 'must be right'? Hmmm...

damnatiomemoriae · 07/09/2026 18:11

And nearly every other news outlet.

Hmmm.

It has definitely been spun here on MN.

No surprises, just questions about the amount of free time some people seem to have.

According to the Lord Lieutenant, writing on behalf of King Charles lll.

Seriously, how do you get to page 4 of a discussion without informing yourself of the basics?

Whatever bile is being spewed it will never be on par with the varying recollections spewed bile.

KC has pretty much given them a beautifully classy version of ‘fuck around and find out’.

Here for it.

It reminds me of long-ago teaching jobs. Some teachers think the way to popularity is to be nice and lenient, But what most kids prefer (even the reprobates!) is strong, consistent and firm authority.

KC…well done for taking a strong line - it will have saved a lot of trouble later.

'Working member' of the Royal Family.
None of them do any work in any meaningful sense anyway. Turning up to charities, reading a speech a flunky wrote for you, and driving off in a motorcade we paid for ain't work.

”Working” in this case is meant to mean those who represent the monarch ie our head of state. It’s not meant to imply that they do a job as in manual labour or something. They do not claim that that is what they do

Can't be long before 'Why do you care so much about people you don't even know?' makes an appearance. Surprised it hasn't already.

Forgive me, but even my council estate brickie relatives would not allow their son to marry a twice-divorced fake American actress from the Hollywood casting couch. As for inbred Germans, we have what we have for our aristocrats. Others not available.

3peassuit · 07/09/2026 18:14

I think it’s KC3 saying a firm “ there we are then” to Harry.

How has it been spun? , posters are quoting parts of the official statement, I’m aware that this might not be happy news to some people but unfortunately facts are facts and the statement is very clear.

Of course it’s a smack down, KC and the Palace could have released this letter just to the relevant agencies involved, but they chose to release it to the public as well, this statement has been released so everyone is clear that they are private citizens no matter what spin the Sussexes like to say in their little favoured journalists WhatsApp group, or People Magazine, or Closer magazine…..

damnatiomemoriae · 07/09/2026 18:16

Spun?

I should imagine the only things spun will be H&M’s heads.

It’ll be like the Exorcist in their house.

caringcarer · 07/09/2026 18:18

It seems to me it's a response to Harry writing letters to Shabana Mahmood demanding security for him and his family when he's doing charity work. Now it's clear, the charity work H&M do is as private citizens so should not get tax payer paid for security.
