King Charles orders Harry and Meghan to be treated like ordinary citizens

Viviennemary · 07/09/2026 15:50

Apparently an order has gone out from King Charles saying that Harry and Meghan are to be treated like ordinary citizens as they are not working members of the royal family. That's according to the DM so it must be right. The thought of those two being pleased at being ordinary is too much.

I wonder just how low they will keep their profile and if it's to do with them wishing to be involved in charities. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to set up their own mock royal court.

But in his own book Harry talks about his father reading to him and stroking his hair to help him go to sleep. It doesn’t sound as if he had no access to his father to discuss concerns (although given his main concerns appeared to be not enough sausages and a smaller bedroom they hardly merit being aired in public).

Good points. There are some tender moments, even when Harry was trying to trash his father.

“Harry is already saying he will be marking armistice with his own military charity” where did you see that @Viviennemary?

It doesn’t surprise me though. He obviously doesn’t realise how much he is held in contempt by the military community!!

Does he mean Invictus?

notnorman · 08/09/2026 07:49

Mischance · 07/09/2026 16:47

So what's wrong with that? Nothing. Sums it up perfectly.

No-one has any reason to think that H and M will be put out by this - why would they? - except in the minds of those who think they are able to read their minds.

No-one has any sane reason to be reading the DM which will put their own spin on everything, even something as clear and neutral as this statement.

I read that they had been suggesting that their ‘royal tours’ absolutely exemplified that the ‘half in half out’ thing would work (that QE2 said they weren’t allowed to do). I see this as a reminder that they would not be allowed to be half in half out.

Viviennemary · 08/09/2026 07:51

It was very important to release this statement and very wise. Somebody mentioned Zara Tindall. But the Tindalls don't do royal tours, make political statements and try and hob nob with heads of state abroad. Harry and Meghan were set to act like working royals. It's been described as a shot across the bow. I agree. Don't even try to overstep the line because it won't be tolerated.

I don't know, had to go to bed early and when I clock in this morning.....the thread is already half-way finished! I've read them all, some real corkers (and one deleted that appears to have been for me....praps a good thing I missed it). A good read with my first cuppa 👏

Strawberrycups764 · 08/09/2026 07:34

I suspect he wouldn’t have felt the need to air his grievances in public if he had had proper access to KC to air them privately. So wierd having to make an appointment to meet your own father!

My dh works even more hours than KC, sometimes throughout the night too, and doesn’t have any staff to help him, but he still remains accessible to his children.

What you on about? Harry was the one who started the distancing thing - he literally left the country! He was the one who came up with the demands for special treatment and got annoyed when he was told no! Then he went and gave the horrible Oprah interview and had the daft Spare book written for him - including intimate personal details about William - and his family are meant to forget all about that and trust him?

Whenever I visited my parents I'd have to let them know when I was going and check if that was ok for them. For the past few years Harry has been making 4-day visits to the UK for years and expects his very busy father to drop everything just for him?

How old are your children? Are they in their 40s?

Now Harry is back in the UK he may see his father more often, but those will be private visits. Harry also has a penchant for revealing the details of private family visits to the world, so I guess his father wants to be careful around him.

In any case, if Harry was a member of my family and he'd said the same things about me as he's said about his family, I'd never want to see him again.

OlympicWomen · 08/09/2026 08:02

Good points, @BunnyBunbunbun. This has been Harry's choice.
Always available to your adult children? I'm a teacher, it wouldn't be appropriate if my adult DC wanted to talk to me when I was teaching yr9. He's never even come to my school.
It just shows that Harry has no idea, and thinks KC should drop everything and be "available", no matter that Harry left to live in the USA.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 08/09/2026 08:03

When people move to the USA they don’t see parents so much do they? He had also aired his grievances publicly and the Queen came out of this rather badly. Harry was hardly flavour of the month with anyone. He's also lost several very expensive court cases and is a liability.

It was his decision to go - and now come back. It’s inevitable that’s there’s a lot of speculation as to why.

KC’s hand was forced because he’s arrived here and his security was raised yet again. The “need” for H&M to visit charities and appear like working Royals for their own ends was clearly annoying and the Royals have all got together at Balmoral! Clearly opinions could have been garnered there. I don’t think Burnham had much to do with it. This is more about William and Kate.

I do agree with commentators that William and Kate might be very alone in terms of Royal duties in 10 years time. The RF will have to scale back what they do because everyone will be in their mid or late, 80s. No dc are likely to be doing anything and Williams cousins clearly won’t be, nor his brother. There’s no Princess Anne doing a shed load of work in the next generation. So there will be change.

Excellent points, well said.
The next time someone calls KC "undignified" they ought to look at the level of dignity displayed by Harry.
That's some low bar.

So dignified KC wanted to identify as a tampon?

So dignified KC authorised a biography which described his mother as “physically and emotionally distant”, and “detached” and his father as “harsh” and “hectoring” , “and deeply irked by his son's solemn and over-sensitive nature” and then went on telly to discuss it in front of 13.5 million viewers?

So dignified that his former valet and assistant had to take the fall three times owing to shenanigans over bags of cash, an alleged cash for citizenship and passport scandal and an alleged “fencing” rumour, for which this member of staff was rewarded with a family home in Highgate?

So dignified that in 1995, he arranged for the Duchy of Cornwall to buy a property to rent to the former Bishop of Gloucester, who had resigned in disgrace after accepting a police caution for gross indecency in 1993?

So dignified that he vowed, as future head of the CofE, in front of the nation and the Archbishop of Canterbury, to love and honour his wife while his mistress was looking on in the congregation?

Look, Charles isn’t a bad man, he has some very good qualities just like Harry does, but let’s not pretend he hasn’t done just as many things to potentially damage the monarchy as Harry has done!

Some things were arguably a lot more serious!

He was just luckier that there weren’t as many podcasts around then to resurrect and discuss them all endlessly!

And of course, being in the top job, KC has had had much more access to top PR firms and expensive lawyers, to keep his image from being tarnished, whereas Harry has been much more exposed.

The hypocrisy though of KC taking a great moral stand against his son with this statement doesn’t sit well at all imho, when he has done just the same, if not worse!

Ah. The tampon. Would you like it if your private, intimate conversations were literally broadcast? He didn't write it all down in a book and share such things with interviewers. That's the difference.
A divorce isn't being "undignified". Millions get divorced.
I don't think it's comparable
Is KC above criticism and reproach? No. Of course not.
I'm responding to someone's wild claims about this letter being "undignified".
That is my point.

mumumental · 07/09/2026 22:31

I think it’s rather undignified and a bit spiteful to publish such a letter regarding your own children, regardless of what you’ve been through with them. Most ordinary people would never do it. No love lost in that ‘family ‘.

If my son had been paid for a televised interview trashing the rest of the family, there would be no coming back from that. He’s lucky they’re speaking to him. Can you imagine what it must be like to have to mentally second check every conversation you have because it might be publicised somewhere on TV or in a book? A published letter outlining something already agreed doesn’t even come close to that.

The press won’t let it go either. Far better to keep your enemies within rather than have them rattling about taking pot shots from afar during Williams’s entire reign!

Yes, I said this in my subsequent post at 23:19

"KC3 isn't just a father of two adult men, he's the monarch. In his capacity as the King, he's simply reiterating the terms of the Sandringham agreement ie the HAMS are not working royals, are not able to use HRH, don't qualify for state funded security (unless agreed by RAVEC) etc. And given that statements from the monarch are as rare as rocking horse poo, it seems to me that KC3 has received information which has triggered this statement to be released. It's a
smart move but not 'spiteful' or 'undignified.'

Definitely, completely agree! KC needs to literally send them a letter just in case they have comprehension issues & don't understand what being a normal pleb entails!

The cognitive dissonance of many on this thread is reminiscent of the uncomfortable position of Trump supporters.

How to defend the indefensible?

It’s always (to me) a fascinating undercurrent to these threads to read the limp attempts of the Sussex fans to counter any criticism of them.

I honestly don’t think they can find anything to counter with, so we get the usual bingo-card jibes dropped in with no relevance or reference to the way the discussion is going.

Their mentality is bizarre. I suppose their idols have disappointed them and they’re struggling to process it.

Me too!

And I am not sure that this is the great PR win that everyone is saying it is.

First of all, as you say Booboobagins,
Harry will always be son of the monarch and then brother of the monarch. He will always be Diana’s son. It’s not factually true that they are ordinary citizens bc Harry can’t escape the circumstances of his birth however much he would like to sometimes.

Second, asking people to treat them as ordinary citizens kind of confirms that they are not, because why would you need to issue a statement in the first place if that was the case? It doesn’t make sense!

Also, it makes Charles look rather snarky towards his own son and the parents of his grandchildren, which is never a good look. Kings should appear to be above such things; especially when they are head of the C of E.

Especially when, imho, if Charles had been really looking out for his son, this situation would never have arisen in the first place. By all accounts there are a lot of tensions between William and Charles too and I can’t help feeling that KC3, being quite insecure, has always been more interested in his own happiness and that of his mistress-now-wife, rather than that of his offspring.

Also, by laying out a statement which is as rigid as this one, it sets out battle lines that simple weren’t there before. If they weren’t worried about a rival court then they wouldn’t have had to issue a statement about it, so it makes BP look rather threatened and weak. Nor does it leave much room for reconciliation.

Finally, it’s a bit silly to be so rigid because Zara Tindall, for example, is not an official working memberr of the royal family, she makes her own money through eventing and sponsorship deals aligned with that, but she can be seen helping out at BP garden parties and she is patron of quite a few charities, so to take an even harder line with your own son seems inappropriate and mean.

Just my opinions!

Harry will always be son of the monarch and then brother of the monarch. He will always be Diana’s son. It’s not factually true that they are ordinary citizens bc Harry can’t escape the circumstances of his birth however much he would like to sometimes.

Harry and his wife are 'ordinary' in the sense that they do not hold any official role or represent the Monarchy. So in that sense, they should indeed be treated as 'ordinary citizens' by governments around the world. In the same way that Ronaldo or Taylor Swift, though far richer and more famous than the Sussexes, are 'ordinary citizens'.

Especially when, imho, if Charles had been really looking out for his son, this situation would never have arisen in the first place.

This again? Harry is 41. He has two children of his own. When is he going to be responsible for his own life?

What do you mean? Who is stopping Harry from getting involved with whatever charity wants to work with him? It's just that if he does so, it will be as a private citizen, not a royal. Just like Zara. As for 'helping out' at garden parties, that is not any sort of official role, and Harry might have been welcome to that that were he and his wife not such loose canons.

You can’t be serious. Firstly the tampon thing was a private conversation that was tapped, not something he notified the public of. I’m assuming you’ve never had a silly sexual conversation then, so you’d be fine with a bit of eavesdropping and notifying everyone you know, and then it being used against you?

and it’s beyond ludicrous to suggest multi millionaire Harry doesn’t have access to the best firms,

He isn’t pushing Harry further out in to the cold. He is stating the Sussexes constitutional position which is that they do not represent the monarch as long as they want to pursue commercial ventures. As has been said ad nauseum, this is Charles as King, not as Harry’s father. If ever Harry wanted to be a representative of the monarch again, he would have to go away and keep quiet, not attempt to monetise his royal birth, keep his nose out of politics and do all this for quite a long time to prove he has understood what representing the monarch means. It doesn’t mean just being the King’s son
