King Charles orders Harry and Meghan to be treated like ordinary citizens

Apparently an order has gone out from King Charles saying that Harry and Meghan are to be treated like ordinary citizens as they are not working members of the royal family. That's according to the DM so it must be right. The thought of those two being pleased at being ordinary is too much.

I wonder just how low they will keep their profile and if it's to do with them wishing to be involved in charities. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to set up their own mock royal court.

I believe King Charles has been advised by the 'great and the good' in the government to put out this statement. They will have been watching the faux 'royal tours' of Meghan and Harry from afar, as well as listening to some of the 'loose cannon' political statements, with their heads in their hands. They will have told KC3 that everything has to be made completely unambiguous concerning the status of Harry and Meghan in case the royal seal of approval seems to be landing on an entity, be it a regime or jam, that the government/the monarchy would not like to endorse.

Your Zara example is interesting because had Harry followed this route I think everyone would be more than happy with it. Working at something you love - making money from it - yes, networking based on those royal connections but not being seen as representing the UK government or being a spokesperson for UK government policy.

She’s a rich, well connected posh person who’s living her best life and enjoying the perks of her extended family.

What she’s not doing is controversial ‘tours’ in foreign countries that force the government to issue guidance that she doesn’t represent them or the Crown. (Columbia, Nigeria, Jamaica)

Make controversial politically loaded statements that cause tension on an already fraught international situation (Ukraine, Gaza, Canadian First Nations)

When Harry was doing all of this at arms length from the UK it was bad enough. But imagine him being pictured at Sandringham having a family weekend with the head of state and then the following week wading into some complicated geopolitical situation - it looks like he’s representing the King’s views and thereby the UK government under the radar.

Now he’s back in the UK and to a point ‘back in the fold’ family wise it needs to be really really clear - especially to foreign interests - that he has absolutely nothing to do with official policy and no influence over the head of state.

Otherwise we will end up with another Andrew/Chinese spy situation.

Well said @wordler

So what's wrong with that? Nothing. Sums it up perfectly.

No-one has any reason to think that H and M will be put out by this - why would they? - except in the minds of those who think they are able to read their minds.

No-one has any sane reason to be reading the DM which will put their own spin on everything, even something as clear and neutral as this statement.

Have you not ever read the daily mail?

It comes across as very spiteful. I often wonder whether the older royal family members actually truly understand love. They're surrounded by "yes" men and compete with one another. I can't imagine essentially cutting my child off, particularly after they've recompensed in such a large way. Strange family.

Spiteful?

You don’t think H’s treachery, spite and cruelty in his book etc might have something to do with the RF keeping him at a distance?

You have a very strange outlook on life!

Indeed, and what does @twilightermummy mean by “they have recompensed in such a large way”? If that means Harry has made up for his poor behaviour I see no evidence of that whatsoever. On the contrary, he has demanded apologies from his family and never suggested he has anything to apologise for, despite breaching their privacy (something he appears to hold so dear) so egregiously and telling a load of lies about them to the world.

Harry has always failed to understand that his popularity wasn’t because of his winning personality and brilliance, it was because of the RF.
The RF also managed to hide his shortcomings and sold him as the lovable, relatable cheeky chappie. He then left and has shown himself not to be that at all. Opening his mouth to show himself as not very bright, spoiled, man child.

Ain’t that the truth!

I honestly wonder if there’s ever bee a time in his life when someone has been brave enough to tell H this home truth?

Losing his mother at 12 had many sad implications, one of which would have been a tendency to indulge him just at the point in his life when a strong guiding hand was needed. It hasn’t done him any favours in the long term and it’s the root of his current situation.

Finally, it’s a bit silly to be so rigid because Zara Tindall, for example, is not an official working memberr of the royal family, she makes her own money through eventing and sponsorship deals aligned with that, but she can be seen helping out at BP garden parties and she is patron of quite a few charities, so to take an even harder line with your own son seems inappropriate and mean.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'so rigid?' The HAMS, as private citizens, are free to have their own commercial activities and charities. However, the statement is a reminder that they do not represent the crown in any capacity, are not HRH and do not qualify for public funding.

With regard to Zara and Mike Tindall, they are in a different league to the HAMS. They don't court publicity, have close relationships with the senior royals, are loyal to the RF and are discrete. They are also very popular with the public.

That may well be the case but that doesn’t mean that the principle on which H and M were originally denied a little flexibility pre-Megxit, ie no HIHO, has very little basis, because Zara does earn her own money with extremely lucrative sponsorship contracts which take her to the Gold Coast every new year for example, yet she and MT still work for the royal family on occasion eg at the summer BP garden parties. She also attends official events like Ascot and rides in the carriages with guests such as foreign dignitaries ec. That is definitely blending royal work with earning private income.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-01-17/sa-government-silent-on-how-much-zara-and-mike-tindall-were-paid/101863196

https://www.tatler.com/article/zara-tindall-is-radiant-in-blue-at-the-buckingham-palace-garden-party

So there is a degree of flexibility in the system, they just awarded it to everyone else but Harry.

If you reversed it, and applied the same principles, then presumably Harry could earn money in rl then help out at BP garden parties and Ascot and perhaps at remembrance events and be present at Trooping the Colour? What’s the difference?

He wouldn’t have received an official stipend for doing so but he would still have been living in a heavily subsidised house, have his uniform laundered for him, and would be provided with transport and join the rest of the family for state subsidised scones with Dubonnet after each event?

So the whole concept of HIHO is a bit flawed anyway if you ask me. It’s just another smoke and mirror strategy employed by the royals to make us think they have clear boundaries around finances when in fact they do not.

Charles and William for example as monarch and heir are allowed unique exemptions that bypass the obligation to pay standard costs that every ordinary citizen must pay, eg they have inheritance tax immunity and don’t have to pay the 40 % tax on inherited wealth passed down through families.

And KC and W pay income tax voluntarily unlike the rest of us.

And KC and W benefit from vast income from the Duchies while carrying out their roles, which are huge corporate entities which do not pay corporation tax.

Why do those important exemptions not qualify as benefiting financially from carrying out royal duties?

And so many of the working royals wear clothing brands such as Turnbull and Asser and Barbour , drive around in Land Rovers, eat food produced by Fortnums, shoot guns manufactured by Purdey etc; companies which all hold Royal warrants. Do you think that they all pay full price for those?

Do you think they pay full price for anything?

They are ALL mixing personal financial reward with charitable duties!

Prince Andrew famouslly did it for years!

The other so-called official working royals like Sophie and Edward enjoy ridiculously lavish living accommodation for a peppercorn rent totally out of proportion to the job they do, with the benefit of clothing allowances and travel.

So the RF’s so-called principles around HIHO are a bit of a fiction! Harry had every right to be upset that he wasn’t given the same flexilbility as his cousin Zara, given that she is twenty-third in line to the succession, whereas Harry is fifth. The monarchy presumably believe in hierarchy or do they just bypass it when it suits them?

IMHO it’s ludicrous that they are a “royal family” instead of an elected head of state but to have that and then try to give the appearance of putting professional rules in place surrounding HIHO is laughable.

Either have a dysfunctional flawed family fulfilling a professional role where the boundaries separating professional and private are blurred, or don’t!

A bit more careful handling of H&M’s propositions and consideration for the fact that M wasn’t the usual royal bride, she was older, from another country, with an established career, could have averted this entire schism at the heart of the crown and all of the surrounding noise which has made the RF in to more of a soap opera than it was before!

If BP naievely think that issuing this statement will cause the press, and Harry for that matter, to go quiet, then they are deluded frankly! Press organisations and a thousand commentators with podcasts are finding the conflict between father and brothers far too lucrative to stop, and pushing Harry further in to another corner will probably result in him doing something even more rash.

BP are just doubling down on a strategy that didn’t work before, and it won’t work now either. Sticking your head in the sand and not speaking face to face and not confronting the emotional aspects of the rift will make Harry, if anything, even more of a loose cannon bc he won’t be able to earn enough money and he may feel he has nothing to lose.

The only way to resolve this is proper mediation and negotiation with compromise on both sides.

I wish they would negotiate frankly as the good citizens of the UK deserve more weighty press stories filling the airwaves than this one.

SA government quiet on how much Zara and Mike Tindall were paid for visit

The South Australian government is keeping tight-lipped on the amount paid to England's former rugby captain and the daughter of Princess Anne for a recent taxpayer-funded stay in the state.

I can't imagine essentially cutting my child off, particularly after they've recompensed in such a large way. Strange family.

But The King is not cutting them off. He is just reminding folk they do not work for the family firm anymore.

And I think that message can be expanded a bit to say there is only one official firm. It was H&M that left the firm. Possibly to set up another rival one. And that seems fine. But the rival one is in no way connected to the "original and only".

And that matters, because the original one can, and do, get certain privileges that are taxpayer funded. But they have to work to strict rules. An official visit to a commonwealth country for example comes with lots of rules for working Royals. For non working Royals, it is a holiday. So no staying for free in tax funded facilities, no freebies because they are representing King and Country. Because they are not. They resigned from that job.

They resigned, and they can't use the company credit card any more.

You have a very strange outlook on life!

It's pretty clear from how Harry has behaved over these past few years that the problem is with him (just look at how nasty and dismissive he was to John Travolta, who was naively just trying to be nice about him, his angry commandments to the media, his security demands to the government, which, even if you believe he has a legitimate claim to enhanced security, just reek of entitlement).

But, even if you agree with him and think his family have treated him unfairly (although I'm not sure how - because William got an extra sausage?) and so he's right to feel bitter, no one who trashes their own family in such a public and vindictive way and makes the nastiest kinds of unsubstantiated allegations that they know will turn many naive people around the world against their family deserves to be respected or trusted in my opinion. It's no wonder his family are keeping a distance.

Why would he say nothing and allow the Sussexes to self identify as working royals, but in an alternative court?
They left. They "found freedom". Fine.
Now... they're back! Seemingly planning events and engagements.
No doubt if KC hadn't responded he would have been labelled "weak and vacillating".

I disagree they have been making “tours” for years now they are not representing the UK or crown. It’s a bit dismal but they look more like Dave and Wallie every day. If they wanted nothing to do with the Royal family they should have ditched the titles and lead their lives. Dave set up a little court in France it was pitiful then ..

Quite. Joking apart ( and we love a laugh on these threads) the unrestrained HAMs have the potential to cause huge embarrassment to the RF and more importantly, the UK, if there’s any danger of them being thought of as royals on official duties. True! It's kind of bizarre. Harry has been the very opposite of "dignified". The awful things he's said - and monetised. He just thinks he's going to slip back in. The pair of them return to 2019 and it's all okey dokey because they miss the status and privilege of being official royals.
I never had much time for KC, but good on him for reminding everyone what the situation is - of the Sussexes choosing.
Harry and Meghan are so undignified in their desperation.

Exactly. That John Travolta jibe was utterly cringe. Ugh. OK, it wasn’t a foreign policy risk in that case but it’s a perfect example of H’s entitlement and ignorance, once deprived of the Men in Grey Suits who use to make him palatable.

God knows what he might do and say. At least KC has made it clear it’s just stupid Harry and not the opinion of anyone in the RF or UK government.

I’m not sure that’s the case, as if it was Charles wouldn’t have needed to put out a statement. It wasn’t a case he was bored so thought he’d do that, clearly something forced his hand, and the statement said they’d had requests for guidance,

Harry himself stated he was a royal and he worked, thus he is a working royal

but a working royal represents the monarch at state of official events. Harry and Megan do not represent the monarch, this was their decision. It is Harry who is attempting to redefine the term, to position himself as a working royal,

which sadly shows how bad things are for them. Considering their freedom flight, their exit, all the brutal words they said and wrote about the royals, about the uk,, and now here they are back in the uk,trying to pretend they are working royals.

But in his own book Harry talks about his father reading to him and stroking his hair to help him go to sleep. It doesn’t sound as if he had no access to his father to discuss concerns (although given his main concerns appeared to be not enough sausages and a smaller bedroom they hardly merit being aired in public).

He has a packed diary. Best to book in a slot rather than hang about waiting because KC has got back to back appointments and the PM at 3pm.

On the contrary, I think it was an important statement to make in order to clarify things that there could have been some confusion over. In what way do you think it was a jibe?

Especially with the Invictus Games coming up, which were created for Harry was he was still a working royal and before he ever met Meghan. The Invictus Games were created with the help of the government and are associated with the Ministry of Defence. Governments themselves have to apply to organise them and they are held with the support of the government. As patron of the Invictus Games, Harry was able to do his faux royal visits to other countries - meeting with their politicians, getting state-provided security -.because he was doing something related to their ministry of defence and had associations with the UK ministry of defence. Some naive foreign politicians may have therefore seen Harry's presence as somehow representative of the royal family, the British state and the British head of state, when they are not. Even within some government and military departments in the UK there may have been some confusion as to how to deal with Harry due to the Invictus Games. Now they know that his activities relating to the Games are not representative of the royal family or the head of state or the British military.

I don't think it's entirely a coincidence that this letter was released after the King met with the prime minister, who may have asked the King to release a clarification.

It should also (although I doubt it) put an end to all the stupid reconciliation stories that the media like to put out, pushing the idea that Harry should be let back into the royal fold and thus back to royal work. Perhaps at a private level Harry may reconcile with his family one day, but that doesn't mean he will ever do official royal work ever again.
