William denounced as "workshy" due to lack of royal engagements he performs

I read this article in the DM which was originally brought to my attention by my MIL, who has a very keen interest in goings-on involving the RF.

'His absences have not gone unnoticed': Norman Baker asks when 'workshy William' is going to step up https://mol.im/a/15908021

I must admit I was surprised to learn that William has attended fewer events than KC and Anne over the last 3 years. I agree with the sentiment that he needs to step up to ease the burden on his father.

NORMAN BAKER asks when 'workshy William' is going to step up

He might be a present husband and father, but when it comes to carrying out royal duties, the Prince of Wales is 'workshy', a royal expert has claimed.

Grifter

Yep

CathyorClaire · 25/06/2026 21:29

I know they happen for non royals successfully too.

It'd be quite interesting to see the long term stats and differentiate between those with a publicly funded cushion and those without.

EvelynBeatrice · 25/06/2026 21:35

I thought - perhaps I’m wrong- that the Palace - King Charles’s team - decide who does what and when , at least in terms of public engagements as opposed to ‘routine’ charity special interest meetings etc.

That being the case, perhaps it’s not his call.

I believe the central control is one thing Meghan found trying.

I wonder how many holidays William and Kate have?

Probably not as many as my mother.
Do you want to winge about her too?

Supersimkin7 · 25/06/2026 21:42

Kate & William aren’t going to start full-time work now.

The Queen’s only objection to Kate was that she’s ‘never done anything’.

When she married PW BP told everyone she had ‘no constitutional role’ ie wasn’t planning on getting up early. And she’s had cancer.

I think the couple are keener on raising sane descendants, which while laudable apparently means you can’t even work part time.

I suspect we’ll need some UK celeb ambassadors & we’ll allow them to use the palaces and the staff and the bling for ‘royal’ engagements.

Fills the gap.

Which Royal is your ma?

Rockyroad1992 · 25/06/2026 21:46

This isn’t news, Will and Kate have always been incredibly lazy. They used the kids as an excuse for years (I don’t believe for a second that William is even vaguely hands on) but as all 3 are getting older and will likely be boarding soon (if not already) the excuses are wearing thin. H&M made them look bad as they actually wanted to work, which is why they had to go.
The Queen wasn’t impressed that Kate barely worked pre-marriage. The mail is an awful rag but I’m glad that these stories are starting to be published and that they are both being held to account. William especially should be working a lot more. I mean, they clearly despise each other, but that’s another story.

Dabralor · 25/06/2026 22:02

I love the amount of slack William is cut due to his ‘young children’.
can you imagine any other dad on mumsnet being excused from going to work so that he could be with his children (who are all at school all day).

ludicrous.

Edited

Let me know where William and Catherine “used the kids as an excuse”

Norman Baker does his research and is overwhelmingly accurate in his assessments.

I don't suppose he's top of the list for a garden party or made up gong any time soon though 😁

He looks like a twat.

AbsoluteHoot · 25/06/2026 16:37

Before Kate’s cancer he was a lazy git, so was she. They can’t keep trotting it out as an excuse forever.

This.

I can confirm.

I’m assuming people on here are unaware of the official announcement from Charles? Happening at 10! , perhaps @CathyorClaire , it might interest you!!!

These things always fail to take into account the private work done for things like Earthshot and managing the Duchy etc

Exactly!! His work isn’t only the visible things that we see. There ie much more to it.

What do you mean - didn’t he get a 2:1 from St Andrews?

My bad. I thought I remembered he'd switched from geography to art history but it was the other way around. The official line was he'd struggled to adjust and I wondered if all university students would be supported like that. Deeply sceptical about the grade being truly deserved. I remember applying to unis at the same time as Edward and he got into Cambridge or Oxford with grades which would have been hard to get into a poly with. I had a lot of friends who did geography at a uni, many very brilliant and intelligent people, but the uni also had a lot of posh twits who couldn't get into Oxbridge, and certain geography options were very popular as easier options.

He has had to care for Kate and KC as well.He also has a young family .I think he wants to put his family first .He has turned out for many events to be fair.I think DM are stirring the pt a bit here TBH

I seriously doubt he's doing much caring for either his wife or his father. They have loads of money, access to world class health care and a host of staff. Wills is not having to give up his job to be an unpaid carer and do the school runs, dinner and bed.

Parasocial world. Facts are not welcome. This is about feelings and most fervent hopes.

They are privileged in so many ways and that makes some angry. One tactic is to look for flaws and failings and when finding nothing concrete, make something up.

So this is what you get, completely fabricated stuff.

I’ve not heard ‘Harry and Meghan showed them up because they wanted to work, that’s why they had to leave’ before, very imaginative 😂🤪

I’m in favour of a more streamlined version of our monarchy - where the monarch is doing the constitutional role as head of state, with his/her spouse, the heir and their spouse doing the bulk of duties and engagements. With a sprinkling of wider family invited to the big events.

The 2nd in line - the heir’s heir - should be allowed to do as much of a regular job as possible for as long as possible. While doing as William did month long internships in the various institutions which are essential to British life - the banking industry, the security services, the NHS, agricultural management training etc.

I think William as 2nd in line would have been allowed to stay employed by the air ambulance for longer had the Queen not been so old, and it was around 2017 when Prince Phillip was seriously declining (lots of behind the scenes prompting about getting obits ready in press circles)

IIRC he had to give up his Air Ambulance job when Phillip retired

Unless there's a tally of online "engagements" factored into the comparisons, I do suspect it's an unfair criticism not based on full facts.

For many of us, traditional ways of working changed dramatically following covid and we continue now as hybrid workers having developed successful ways of agile working. William is a modern working royal and a hybrid worker, just like a proportion of the population are.

He struggled with all the wealthy American women who suddenly applied to Art History in order to meet him.

I think William prefers longer term projects rather than the traditional ribbon cutting royal appearances. It's clear that he has a lot of contact with the charities and events he supports outside of an "official" visit
