The royal family

William denounced as "workshy" due to lack of royal engagements he performs

I read this article in the DM which was originally brought to my attention by my MIL, who has a very keen interest in goings-on involving the RF.

'His absences have not gone unnoticed': Norman Baker asks when 'workshy William' is going to step up https://mol.im/a/15908021

I must admit I was surprised to learn that William has attended fewer events than KC and Anne over the last 3 years. I agree with the sentiment that he needs to step up to ease the burden on his father.

NORMAN BAKER asks when 'workshy William' is going to step up

He might be a present husband and father, but when it comes to carrying out royal duties, the Prince of Wales is 'workshy', a royal expert has claimed.

On Resonation Street

Blimey, that looks like one of my knackered old cardis that I haven’t got round to binning.

sweatymessi · 25/06/2026 20:30

and it’s delightful to see so many new names!

What does this mean? Are the Royal boards not for all users of MNs?

Perhaps you are too old for it to resonate with you? 🤣

TatianaTwinkletoes · 25/06/2026 20:34

IDasIX · Today 19:51
A member of staff dresses them, another hands them some briefing, another drives them to engagement, they cut the ribbon and give the speech someone wrote for them, they are taken back home again, a staff member brings them tea and toast, another helps them into their jammies, they kiss the kids goodnight after nanny has washed and put them to bed, then they fall asleep utterly exhausted from the extremely hard job they have.
And you know this how exactly?

nochance17 · 25/06/2026 20:34

He’s been called Workshy for years , long before Kate’s cancer.

Exactly, I had no idea it was a controversial opinion and one you could only have if you are hoping for some free jam!

Given that it’s behind a paywall it probably won’t actually get enough eyes for the free jam prize.

Didn’t he give up his actual job with the air ambulance to become a full time royal?

Didn't he take that job to avoid royal duties? And I don't think he worked full time. To be fair, I think most royal visits look boring as fuck. But if I was getting public money, I'd learn to love it. Interested in the people who are sure Anne "loves" engagements. Perhaps she's just more duty orientated?

AbsoluteHoot · 25/06/2026 20:41

DaisyDooley · 25/06/2026 20:12

Presumably you will be planning on retiring at some point? Yes?

Williams work -unlike most of us- will only get more pressured and more intense the older he gets. There will be no retirement.
He will when he is King get the famous ‘Red Boxes’ every day apart from Christmas Day. Every day.
Conservatively they take 2-3 hrs to read, question and sign off.
I’m pretty sure the late Queen decided to ease William and Kate into their duties especially when they had 3 small children. She could see how it badly affected Charles & Diana not seeing their parents much.
I don’t think William and Harry saw much of their parents either - more than royals used to but certainly not inthe way the rest of us would .
William and Catherine did not want this for their children. The Duchy of Cornwall will now take up a lot of William’s time.
He will work till the day he dies. He will be head of state. Give him a break!

The red boxes are meaningless. They are only symbolic. They might give the appearance of involvement, but the monarch has no power. He can read them but the government would function the same without them. They are merely there to create the appearance of the monarch being involved in governing.

DaisyDooley · 25/06/2026 20:19

Do you understand what ‘Head of State’ means?
Would you like me to find you a link to explain the role?

I do what Head of State means.

And, in the context of us, I question it.

MarmaladeorJam · 25/06/2026 20:44

No doubt someone will be getting a basket of overpriced jam delivered soon for their efforts.

To be clear, I didn’t mean anyone on this thread. As I’m sure you knew!

Similar with his other "projects This is a man who couldn't hack a geography degree-the chances he is actually in charge are minimal.

It can’t be many as they are so busy with work 🤔

CathyorClaire · 25/06/2026 20:52

Haven't RTFT but W has been dubbed workshy for years.

He didn't take on even what's laughingly called full time royal work until he was 35 which gave him quite the hall pass.

He's now cut the time spent on the admittedly ineffective patronages severely seemingly in favour of pimping his vanity projects and giddying up the staff responsible for maximising his personal profits 24/7.

Grifter.

What do you mean - didn’t he get a 2:1 from St Andrews?

CathyorClaire · 25/06/2026 20:57

VanCleefArpels · 25/06/2026 16:32

These things always fail to take into account the private work done for things like Earthshot and managing the Duchy etc

Basically vanity project and personal profit then.

Norman Baker has form for this kind of nonsense, and the press love to shit-stir. This is just lazy journalism.

Norman Baker does his research and is overwhelmingly accurate in his assessments.

I don't suppose he's top of the list for a garden party or made up gong any time soon though 😁

I’m in favour of a more streamlined version of our monarchy - where the monarch is doing the constitutional role as head of state, with his/her spouse, the heir and their spouse doing the bulk of duties and engagements. With a sprinkling of wider family invited to the big events.

The 2nd in line - the heir’s heir - should be allowed to do as much of a regular job as possible for as long as possible. While doing as William did month long internships in the various institutions which are essential to British life - the banking industry, the security services, the NHS, agricultural management training etc.

I think William as 2nd in line would have been allowed to stay employed by the air ambulance for longer had the Queen not been so old, and it was around 2017 when Prince Phillip was seriously declining (lots of behind the scenes prompting about getting obits ready in press circles)

You do make me laugh @CathyorClaire 😆!. Do you just find a comment and think 'how can I put a negative spin on this'? You must have a really comprehensive knowledge of the RF to be so well informed!

Edit for typo

Month long assignments don't even begin to scratch the surface of the industry in question.

Hopefully he was sent out by the real workers to find the industry of the day's equivalent of tartan paint.

Dutchhouse14 · 25/06/2026 21:16

The Royal family have enormous privilege, of course they don't work hard, its ridiculous to suggest they do and treat them like saints.
57 engagements over 947 days isn't hard work, especially as sometimes they clock up 2 engagements in the same day if they are travelling and a lot of the engagements they do are the things other people take annual leave for and attend for pleasure, Royal Ascot, Wimbledon, Chelsea flower show etc
Maybe he has some meetings overseeing the duchy of Cornwall estate etc but I doubt its anywhere near like a full time job of 37 hours a week for 47 weeks of the year!
Yes he has kids, lots of people do, yes his wifes recovered from cancer , unfortunately many people need to work through this too and without the help of any staff.

Informational internships of a short duration can definitely be useful. It’s about meeting, networking and hearing from the inside track. Not teenage work placements - professional secondments - I know they happen for non royals successfully too.

William has also been very selective with his private secretaries and seems to choose one every two years with a different and specific skill set - domestic politics, international relations, budgeting for big institutions etc.

I think he’s making good choices within the environment he’s operating in.
