Since there is a flurry of discussion on another thread its probably best to create a thread for it to take place here and not derail another one.

So William is not attending a number of important events the recent one being the VJ day..lots of you think he should have after all he is the future King and if he can't make time for these things then it begs the question what is the point of them?

So discuss away...what should he turning up to, what is his actual role if he starts to not do these types of things...

@jamnpancakes but you questioned that poster about the undergoing treatment statement. At least have the grace to acknowledge that!

Yeah ive known people with cancer who have had the chemotherapy took them years to get right again they are still effected now over five years AFTER they finished treatment

No they didn't dive back into work there husband supported them

But if that’s the case for Kate, stay out of the spotlight completely and recover, don’t rock up to Wimbledon and then disappear again!

Like Meghan and Harry then? Do you follow them and think they are so hilarious?

I predicted you’d say this about five comments ago.

No, I don’t follow them because they’re not influencers. I said that, HYPOTHETICALLY, if Catherine and William were no longer royals and were influencers, I’d follow them and find them entertaining.

In remission does not mean someone is cured of cancer. I hate to think of the number of people I know who were in remission or who rang the bell and then died of cancer. I hate even hearing someone use that phrase.

I never said she was cured of cancer.

hangerup · 20/08/2025 09:45

Never watched them, not watched the interview, read the book, watched the TV show, etc because I'm not interested. Did get accused of being a stan once though because I said "she's hardly Myra Hindley" by someone who did watch and read everything they did 🤔

That wasn't for you.

No idea what you are talking about . Can you use more words?

L0bstersLass · 20/08/2025 09:49

@Spectre8 He doesn't habe to do every single thing but he is our head of state, an occasion such as VJ day should be of importance to attend!

Eh?! No he isn't. That's the King.
If you're going to start a thread about the man, at least realise that he's not the Head of State.

The point wasn't made to you. It was in response to something a specific person had said. That's how a forum works 🙄

I consider myself a normal person ( others may disagree!)I was semi retired when cancer hit and fully expected to do part time work for a bit longer but simply wasn’t able to.
I now do some voluntary work and pick and chose what else I do . Outwardly I look fine but as anyone who has had cancer knows , the mental effects last forever.
W and C know that when they become King and Queen , that’s it for the rest of their lives so frankly I don’t blame them spending time as a family .

'Being King and Queen for the rest of their lives' is not onerous and has hardly any responsibility and none of any consequence, apart from to b themselves and their own continuation. They are figureheads. They have to shake hands and make small talk a few times a year with dignitaries they may not like. The fact that a 96 year old woman riddled with cancer could do it shows its not hard work. William didn't have cancer. His wife did, she had been in remission for a year. She is surrounded by servants. His father still has cancer yet he couldn't be bothered to step up to help him out or turn up for a morning to church.

Yes but I’ve answered your questions and you’ve then changed the goalposts and ignored other points I’ve made?

ARichtGoodDram · 20/08/2025 09:53

I do think William will have to start doing more engagements if he wants to keep public opinion from turning against him.

However, the split of royals doing stuff on VJ Day was in balance imo - the King & Queen doing the main event, the Edinburgh's doing, well, Edinburgh, and the Gloucester's doing the two prisoner of war services (the Duke is patron of the far east prisoner of war charity, and has been heavily involved with them over the years).

Throwing William into the mix somewhere would have taken attention away from either of the other "lesser" royals, in fact had William done something somewhere the events attended by the Gloucesters would likely have got zero mention anywhere.

LifeOfAShowGirl · 20/08/2025 09:45

I never said she was cured of cancer.

In that case then she will be being monitored for any signs of a reoccurrence or signs anywhere else in her body so that may affect the amount of things/events she attends. You can play with words all you like.

Anyone can reply on a forum, what aren't you getting?

Umm no I haven't .

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 20/08/2025 09:54

Does he actually work a 47 week year though? What does he do apart from attend sports events?

hangerup · 20/08/2025 09:54

Why don't you use less?

But, again, this doesn’t seem to affect the events she is interested in. And, in any event, there is no reason for both of them to have skipped VJ Day. She is getting the best private medical care available. There is absolutely no reason that William needed to miss it.

Genevieva · 20/08/2025 09:56

Buckingham Palace decide who attends what. The King goes to the most important events. They also do engagements that get less press coverage. They have both attended local events near me because there is a lot of Duchy land here, so they take a close interest.

How do you know that the King didn't suggest he spent time with his family while he can?

There will be decades ahead when William has to forgo a normal life (not that's it is normal now.)

We don't know the true extent of the King's health which may be far worse than we're being told.

Considering the shit time he's had for years, I think his family and the school holidays are more important than just another Royal bod at a function.

hangerup · 20/08/2025 09:56

"jamnpancakes
My comment was relating to your comment that she is no longer undergoing treatment - you don't know this."

"She has publicly stated she is no longer undergoing treatment and is in remission."

"In remission does not mean someone is cured of cancer."

You can't make it up

ladybirdsanchez · 20/08/2025 09:57

I think William and Catherine need to be careful, because they're starting to get a reputation for not turning up to things and for taking too much of a backseat. I understand them wanting to be hands on parents, I understand them wanting to live privately, I understand them wanting to ring-fence their family time, but it is literally their job, and one they are ridiculously well-paid for, to be visible at times of commemoration such as the 80th anniversary of VJ Day. I don't expect him to be at the same one as Charles and Camilla, but I do expect him and Catherine to be at one of them, somewhere.

Catherine's recent cancer treatment is not an excuse. The King, who is 35 years older, is still having cancer treatment and he was right there, front and centre, doing his duty. Good for him. He flew down from Balmoral, where he was having his summer holiday, in order to attend the service in Staffordshire. I don't know what W&C's excuse was, but since their DC are at private school they've been on school holidays since early July, so they've had plenty of time to take a family holiday somewhere without missing the VJ commemorations.
