William's non attendance to important events

Since there is a flurry of discussion on another thread its probably best to create a thread for it to take place here and not derail another one.

So William is not attending a number of important events the recent one being the VJ day..lots of you think he should have after all he is the future King and if he can't make time for these things then it begs the question what is the point of them?

So discuss away...what should he turning up to, what is his actual role if he starts to not do these types of things...

OP posts:
hangerup · 20/08/2025 09:34

but I do have a gap in my understanding around what he does in his role. I am aware it's not all attending events, but what else does he do?

I asked the same as I don't understand what they do? They seem very pointless to me.

jumpingthehighjump · 20/08/2025 09:34

The part I don't get is - let's say he gets a (pretty generous) month off a year for holidays.

He very very rarely does engagements during the school holidays, which are about 16 weeks a year.

HappySummerDays · 20/08/2025 09:34

The majority of people would not turn up to see Edward cut a ribbon, never mind the Gloucesters or the Kents.
What they want are the children - the focus is switching to George, Charlotte and Louis.

You don't know this.

Oh, please.

She has publicly spoken about how much she loves the tennis etc., she goes to the flower shows but can’t attend a VJ Day memorial?

I think this is what pisses me off so much.

My family have been through some horrendous health struggles in the last five years. At one point, my mum and I worked around the clock to keep the family business afloat because everyone else was sick. We then also cared for the sick family members and stretched ourselves unbelievably thin, and when they recovered? No time off, no months away from work, just back to normal to keep the business going. Real people don’t have these luxuries and frankly, why should the royals? They don’t do anything special.

That does sound really, really tough. Your Mum and you sound super amazing and strong even when you wanted anything else but to be. I hope everyone is doing ok now.

But life is like that for everyone. The royals live lives that are cushy in some ways and tough in other ways it’s probably hard to understand if you’ve not lived it in others. I’m pretty sure there are more than plenty of people in places around the globe wishing they have lives like ours in the UK. Even mine where it’s a constant struggle to try not to need remitting to a mental health ward.

jamnpancakes · 20/08/2025 09:35

LifeOfAShowGirl · 20/08/2025 09:33

Because she is a member of the royal family and should work as such.

As I’ve said, if they’re really not bothered by the work side of it, step down and live your life in private. Remove yourselves from the line of succession and quit as working royals. Take your children away and let them grow up in private, and you can go and do what you want. The irony of it is, I would absolutely follow them if they were private citizens as influencers or whatever. I’d find them fascinating. But as it stands, they come across really very badly.

You would follow them if they were influencers? 😳 hmmmm

Even more for private schools!

I’m not a Sussex Squad, but I’m still really disappointed in W and K. I am a vague Royalist in that I think they give cohesion, can represent us on the world stage and brighten up lives with their appearances.

But W and K need to realise they owe their position to the goodwill of the people and if they can’t be arsed to turn up on a wet Wednesday and build a relationship, that social contract will break down.

I did think W should have turned up at VJ Day - people gave their lives and suffered terribly in that conflict. It just shows respect. As for K’s ridiculous video - give me a break, it’s tone deaf about people’s lives.

If W has a “vision’ then he’d better get better at expressing it because he’s not convincing a lot of people at the moment.

Agree with this post. Not a fan of the Sussexes, I think a lot of their behaviour has been embarrassing and unkind but they are not constitutionally relevant. William is.

The RF are part of our history and traditions and they have a role to play which IMO W is not particularly interested in and has always done the bare minimum. That's a problem. I have huge sympathy for Catherine recovering from cancer and the impact on the whole family, of course that will mean fewer engagements etc, but William does still need to actually do his job.

thepariscrimefiles · 20/08/2025 09:36

Spectre8 · 20/08/2025 09:06

A luxury most of us cant afford to do its tone deaf. How do we do that when we have to go to work full time to earn enough to pay for the basics with upcoming looking tax rises...but sure let's just spend more time with the family guys 🤔🙄

I remember the justified disgust from many people, particularly people recovering from cancer, when Allison Pearson, writing in the Telegraph, referred to other people with cancer as 'less mortals' compared with the Princess of Wales.

'"On a cold, grey day, the princess proves a tonic at Trooping the Colour," says the paper. Its columnist, Allison Pearson, thanks her for attending, saying "lesser mortals" with her illness "would have stayed home, tucked up in their jim-jams".'

The sycophancy from certain sections of the media is ridiculous to the point of parody.

I think it’s fascinating. I love watching them just live their lives - many people are fabulously wealthy and so out of touch but they’re interesting to watch.

But as it stands, they want all the benefits of being royalty without any of the work.

He’s lazy. Simple As. Kate too, imo.

Ah yes, people recovering from serious cancers are well known to be lazy 🙄

Coffeeishot · 20/08/2025 08:42

What is the matter with you ?

Nothing. I was just pointing out that he does next to nothing in comparison to what Charles did when he was PoW, and continues to do now even though he has cancer.

My comment was relating to your comment that she is no longer undergoing treatment - you don't know this.

@IAmATorturedPoet

really? you don't see all the press articles about "modest homes", "no live in staff", "thrifty rewearing", "hands on parenting", etc. I mean I know it's fluff but some obviously buy into it.

She has publicly stated she is no longer undergoing treatment and is in remission.

What's a serious cancer vs a non serious cancer?

What’s interesting?

im sure you’re going to accuse me of being some sort of Sussex supporter but im not really arsed by them. They went off and whatever, not bothered.

Supersimkin7 · 20/08/2025 09:39

He and Kate don’t turn up.

Except for showbiz and sport. And yachts.

Diana liked glitz and stadiums too, but she was the planet’s biggest grafter and made zillions for charity. She was mentally ill for years, which is a bloody site harder than being in remission for cancer. She turned up.

hangerup · 20/08/2025 09:40

I think they are boring but maybe it's all behind closed doors 😆

I just find watching rich people do their thing so funny. I don’t know why, but when they’re private citizens it does amuse me. It’s just so hilariously out of touch 🤣

Could you describe what this new model is like because I have no idea.

I fear a new model is barely showing your face and just putting out messages on social media and pretty videos

Yes but of course still having all the cash, the homes, the swanning around in jewels and being invited to events, not being subject to the same laws as everyone else. So basically the same benefits but for less work. William will make the Monarchy even more irrelevant than it already is.

jamnpancakes · 20/08/2025 09:42

LifeOfAShowGirl · 20/08/2025 09:37

She has publicly stated she is no longer undergoing treatment and is in remission.

In remission does not mean someone is cured of cancer. I hate to think of the number of people I know who were in remission or who rang the bell and then died of cancer. I hate even hearing someone use that phrase.

Methefurious · 20/08/2025 09:23

There are facts and there are opinions. Some simply arent bothered that they havent done x, y or z engagements. Sorry if that displeases you.

I couldn't care less. I just pop in to read the comments of the high horse defenders. 😀

Like Meghan and Harry then? Do you follow them and think they are so hilarious?
