William's non attendance to important events

Since there is a flurry of discussion on another thread its probably best to create a thread for it to take place here and not derail another one.

So William is not attending a number of important events the recent one being the VJ day..lots of you think he should have after all he is the future King and if he can't make time for these things then it begs the question what is the point of them?

So discuss away...what should he turning up to, what is his actual role if he starts to not do these types of things...

I’m confused! Are people actually under the misapprehension that the heir to the throne should just work 9to5 in a normal job?
why? , security aside, why? They are rich , they don’t need to work at all and even if the monarchy was abolished they would be rich and not need to work.
people seem very invested in this idea that William and Catherine are lazy !
where does this come from? , we have literally no proof of what they get up to when not in the public eye or if the media doesn’t report on it .
the younger royals use sm unlike the older ones, for all anyone knows he could be working all the time like his father did in the background, or he could be doing nothing.
the whole point is nobody knows .
this whole thread is dripping with delight at sticking the boot in, and as always well timed when Harry is being criticised .

Why? Sense of purpose, dignity, sense of own worth, friends, colleagues.

And I don't understand why all the reasons associated with cancer for why Kate can't do much don't apply to a 75 yr old man?

Exactly! I feel very strongly about this. Charles is still undergoing treatment. Kate said back in February I think it was... she has completed treatment.
No one seems to care about what Charles is going through, and he just rolls up and does his duty.

The King was there representing the country - that’s what matters
Yet the heir to the throne and Head of the Armed Forces in the not distant future... wasn't. Bizarre

William and Catherine did not ignore VJ day, they issued a statement in lieu of personally attending celebrations. Similarly yhe Princess Royal, (amongst other things Colonel of The Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons); Royal Colonel, The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland; Royal Colonel, 52nd Lowland, 6th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland (TA); and Chief Commandant for Women in the Royal Navy) didn't attend any VJ day celebrations.

It was Anne's 75th birthday FFS! Given she tops the number of engagements every year of all the Royals, I think she was entitled to celebrate her 75th Birthday!
A SM message that probably someone else wrote for William is very poor 'in lieu of personally attending'.

Yes Anne is 75 and did 474 engagements last year. The idea that a social media message is work is absolutely laughable.

hangerup · 20/08/2025 15:48

@jeffgoldblum but I don't believe I have said anything insulting about W&K? Obviously when I said disliking the Royals it was more of a catch all about disliking what they represent and the institution of them. But then I have called Andrew all sorts on other threads so I can't get on my high horse if someone wants to call William
a dick or whatever. Am I fan of William
and Kate in their roles? No.

I still don't understand what you so upset about though and why you would accuse me of being another poster. You don't have to like my opinion, agree with it or read it.

jumpingthehighjump · 20/08/2025 15:49

jeffgoldblum · 20/08/2025 15:44

Flattered but not interested, sorry

You are very rude to continuously say this to the OP. It makes you look very bad.

The OP is quite entitled to an opinion. Ignore it if you want.

cumbriaisbest · 20/08/2025 15:50

And let's face it, he's putting his young family first and who wouldn't?

How many people with bills to pay and a mortgage can " put their young family first"

hangerup · 20/08/2025 15:50

@jumpingthehighjump it is bizarre but I do find it fascinating tbh.

Kate stated last September she had finished chemotherapy. And stated in January/February that she was in remission and cancer free.

Yet she has only done 5 appearances this year. One of these was to the hospital she was treated at, one was to a hospice, one was with children to a museum, one was to present a fashion award and one was to Wimbledon.

Maybe it’s just me but I’d be expecting some more awareness around cancer or something.

Oh me too, but I think with Andrew I'm prepared to push the boundaries!

Andrew is a special case isn’t he! 🤣

wordler · 20/08/2025 15:50

Spectre8 · 20/08/2025 15:43

And to add if they want it to mean smaller, less work then thay shoukd come with not needing as much money as they get now in terms of the sovereign grant and handing over assets so they can be commercialised to generate money to keep them in good repair or sold off

And that’s a totally fair discussion to have - that I as someone who prefers our current system of a constitutional monarchy to the idea of a republican presidential system.

I’d like to start with a more transparent breakdown of the Sovereign grant and how much goes on building and staff upkeep that we’d want to continue for any head of state etc.

I definitely don’t want to see historical assets sold off to - most likely - Chinese or Russian billionaires.

But making buildings like Buck Palace generate more income for its upkeep would be good.

cumbriaisbest · 20/08/2025 15:52

Maybe it's good C doesn't do much? Less hundreds of thousands of pounds going on coat dresses.

hangerup · 20/08/2025 15:52

@jeffgoldblum why can't people criticise W&K without be accused of being Harry lovers or whatever?

MissFenellaPrism · 20/08/2025 15:53

He is! However, I do understand that is probably for another thread ☺️

Absolutely. Who knows if he wrote it. If he did, it would have taken max 2 minutes to knock out. IF he wrote it.

I am no Royalist but I hope Anne enjoyed her day off and had a good 75th birthday with her family. She deserved it, as she is the workhorse of them all.

hangerup · 20/08/2025 15:54

This is definitely overdue.

Tutorpuzzle · 20/08/2025 15:54

I think the problem, @hangerup , is that the republican sentiment is growing ever greater because of W&K’s lack of work ethic. And as the stories about their cost to the public purse, the shadowy lengths they go to to hide their money, being an appalling landlord etc etc there simply is no constitutional argument for the RF to exist.

If there was @jeffgoldblum et al would have put it forward! Instead, you get insulted, I get insulted and then we go off on the Meghan go round…

(and now divorce 🙄)

I think those are very good points, wordler. I often think that more could be made of BP as an asset.

Quite. Compare the upcoming engagements on the royal diary for Anne vs William. Anne has 3 pages of results. William has none. Anne also topped the numbers for 2024 despite having a significant head injury. Trying to defend William from accusations of him being workshy by pointing to Anne really isn’t going to help matters.

I’m a republican but Anne is probably one of the few I have respect for.

I’m not upset! 🤣 I’m so laid back on here I’m practically horizontal!
and in the many , many years I’ve posted this thread is the first time I’ve been told to calm down and that I’m irrational! 🤣
I didn’t accuse you of insulting the royal family, I simply asked about your statement of the thread being for those who dislike the royals , if it was just a turn of phrase or funny, that was all you needed to say .
after witnessing some really horrible comments previously, it’s sadly not as unusual as you may think.

Contrast this with what I have just read about Edwina Mountbatten, lazy until World War II but throwing herself into the Red Cross with responsibility for 60,000 staff znd 10,000 volunteers.

Not true.

Total official engagements by the Princess of Wales in 2025: 32, as of June 29, 2025

We don't know why W&C didn't attend any celebrations. Many people point out it's 12 months since Catherine stopped chemo, as if thats no reason not to be enjoying perfecthealth. But we don't know her prognosis, we don't know if she required resection surgery, we don't know any long term complications of treatment or medical intervention which, for anyone who has experienced cancer themselves or in a loved one knows, can be profound.
Harry is often excused his behaviour because his mother died so young. William has 3 children under 12 and what must he have gone through with the possibility of history repeating itself?
William is often accused of being lazy, but anyone who qualified as a helicopter pilot and then worked as a S&R pilot is certainly not that. And let's face it, he's putting his young family first and who wouldn't? The way he is being castigated for having the means and funds to support his wife and family shows what a poisoned chalice he has inherited.

www.townandcountrymag.com/society/tradition/a65790262/prince-william-kate-middleton-vj-day-message-2025/

A brief google search informs me that the VJ Day celebrations occurred on Princess Anne’s 75th birthday.

To celebrate, she held a large reception for her many charities at Buckingham Palace.

Not quite as work shy as some, is it?

Edwina really came into her own, there. It seemed to galvanise her, she was a very interesting character.
