William's non attendance to important events

Since there is a flurry of discussion on another thread its probably best to create a thread for it to take place here and not derail another one.

So William is not attending a number of important events the recent one being the VJ day..lots of you think he should have after all he is the future King and if he can't make time for these things then it begs the question what is the point of them?

So discuss away...what should he turning up to, what is his actual role if he starts to not do these types of things...

I don't see an issue . All the engagements are pre arranged and agreed well in advance by their teams .

This used to be the case, but someone I know who is involved in managing these types of engagements says the younger royals are a nightmare in this context - changing plans at the last minute, not sticking to the schedule etc. they seem unaware or uncaring of the amount of other people's work that going into the planning and organising, and of the disappointment of members of the public when they don't turn up as expected.

There are plenty of threads for sycophants and die hards. There are plenty of threads to curse H&M. It's ok to have a thread for people who dislike the Royals, if it distresses fans why read it?

So are you actually saying the quiet part out loud!
this thread is actually not about fair criticism of William not attending the service but instead is a thread for people who dislike the royals and want to insult them?

Where has anything been said that’s been just an insult? Everything I have said (as an example, I am NOT suggesting that you are singling me out, nor am I assuming this comment is about me), has either been backed up by facts, or is my reasoned opinion.

hangerup · 20/08/2025 15:18

@MissFenellaPrism no, in terms of your barometer of what's nice or not. I thought that was obvious 😆😆

Ok. I'll just continue to post what I choose to, within the talk guidelines. Oh, and I never get personal.

hangerup · 20/08/2025 15:20

I think one of my first posts said I'm not a Royalist. Is that a shock that some people are Republicans?

And hang on, you mean to tell me when people are criticising the way Meghan holds her pen it's because some people don't like her, or are misogynist or racist? Never!

Frankly I find it insulting that they have the ability to turn up to things that relate to their hobbies (football, Wimbledon), but can’t be bothered to turn up to things like this. And I include Catherine in that statement, at this point. She finished chemotherapy nearly a year ago and is in remission. Most normal people would be expected to be back to work at this point.

Absolutely, we all knew C would be at Wimbledon.
I'm going through my second round of treatment for metastasised cancer, only radiotherapy this time, and I'm having to work 3 days a week to pay my bills etc.

LifeOfAShowGirl · 20/08/2025 15:12

Generally the people within my team will be told “Life is off because of a cold/the flu/XYZ” to give an indication of timescales for return.

In the case of the monarchy, I think if it’s going to affect your work to this degree, a year on, you need to be honest about it. Because otherwise it has the situation we have ended up with. They look as though they are hiding behind the diagnosis to excuse skipping events (such as VJ Day), and only turning up to the ones they enjoy.

No it’s simply not relevant!
we have already been informed that Catherine and Charles had cancer and are being ( or have been) treated, that is the same level of information anyone would need to give a “employer “ , nobody should be forced to give any more information than that.
people only want to know more for nosy , comparison reasons.

hangerup · 20/08/2025 15:21

@MissFenellaPrism Good for you, I look forward to more thoughtful contributions.

I hope you have a speedy recovery 🩷 this is what people mean though. It’s very pick and choose which engagements they do and don’t do.

It absolutely is relevant when a year on, she’s barely working, unless it’s an event she wants to go to.

wordler · 20/08/2025 15:22

If Charles had wanted William at the VJ event he would have been there.

William is the heir which isn’t a job it’s a position with a specific set of responsibilities.

Provide the next heir.
Support the current monarch by doing any tasks they ask you to.
Learn ad much about the top job ad you can before it’s your turn.

He won’t just have decided on a whim not to go to this event or any other.

His team and the King’s team will have coordinated their diaries for several months in advance.

hangerup · 20/08/2025 15:23

@jeffgoldblum I don't believe I have said one insulting about W or K on this thread, I have insulted Andrew many times though.

Are you related to the other poster who arrived and told us their relative planned and managed these engagements?
amazing to have so many friends of staff here.

Edited

What Charles wants is irrelevant.

At the end of the day, the only reason the royals are even still around is because of the men who gave their lives in the war. Had we lost, Edward could have been installed again as a puppet monarch due to his sympathies towards Germany. Germany, Japan and Italy allied together to try and spread their ideologies across much of the globe.

The least William and Kate could have done was bother to turn up.

IdaGlossop · 20/08/2025 15:27

The monarchy is once again in peril. William and Catherine could be its saviours. Do they have the appetite? Their judgement is off. It's good to prioritise bringing up their children. There is widespread sympathy for Catherine's illness and what it means for William that both is wife and father are suffering.

Not showing up on VJ Day is quite shocking, especially when the remaining veterans are so old, yet another residence was announced over the same weekend, and a schmaltzy film from Catherine was released. It's a shame as they are both good at gladhanding, have relatable causes, plenty of staff and no shortage of money.

For typo

Loads of people manage to do it while also doing full time jobs…

And without live-in nannies, chefs and other servants.

Well, I don't dislike the royals. I do dislike it when they don't appear to want to bother to perform the role, and IMO William has consistently been poor for this. Maybe stop generalising and making the thread a childish conspiracy theory about Sussex fans or whatever? I couldn't give a stuff about the Sussexes. Why is it ok for the heir to the throne to do the bare minimum, not just lately but basically from the word go? Are people's standards that low that they don't expect the next in line to the throne and future figurehead for the armed forces to show up for a few hours to show respect for the anniversary of VJ day?
