How will the Royal Family end?

The Royal Family will end. Not yet obviously. But within the next generation.

People often assume institutions like this fall slowly and gradually. We see a bit of that already happening with the reduction in "working" Royals, far less favourable poll results than when Queen Elizabeth reigned, and the willingness of the media to be more critical of the Royal Family.

I have seen people commenting assuming this means the Royal family will end soon. I think they misunderstand what is happening.

But society is changing and the deference that Queen Elizabeth attracted can no longer be taken for granted. Colonies are no longer happy for the Royals to carry out cosplay colonial tours on their soil, and increasingly they will remove the King as their Head of State. But I think when the end comes it will be sudden and unexpected. Similar to the fall of the Soviet Union. A clear weakening of the institution, but then a sudden, and shocking fall.

The aftermath will be very messy though as the Royal family try and fight for as much of the states wealth as they can, using the courts if they need to.

How is the Royal Family going to end?

JoyousGreyOrca · 13/02/2025 15:50

With a sudden scandal that will bring them down. It won't be anything that anyone will foresee beforehand, or only a few people. But it will be one that simply can not be brushed over.

Scandal is at the heart of royalty and they are still here.
So how will the Royal family end? It won’t be through scandal.

The Royal Family can ride a certain amount of scandal as long as the media help with the PR narrative. As soon as the media, or most of the media will not co-operate, then they are in deep trouble.

How is the Royal Family going to end?

Yes, one would like to know that oneself!

With reference to the courts - one must remember our forebears made at lot of the laws up themselves. Guffaw, gaffaw!

Eightdayz · 13/02/2025 16:01

It seems like you really want rid of them op.

Revolution will be the only way. And I doubt enough people will be bothered to make that happen.

I mean look at the state of the country now. You want more division?

They’ve been riding that wave for centuries.
They will keep riding it. There is media out there already against the RF.
Media won’t stop people’s love for them.

I think Philip to a large degree and Elizabeth to some degree understood that the existence of the Royal family is not guaranteed. They also understood the need to be seen to be doing one's duty, and to move with the times. Charles has some understanding of that. I do not think either William or Catherine understand this at all. And unless they learn it quick, there is going to be trouble ahead.

No it will not be a revolution. For all the talk of Royal assent and opening of parliament, the Royal family only retain their positions as Head of State through public consent.

I don't think it will end. but do think it will change, don't know how. but I don't think younger people who can't buy a home(for example) will be so supportive of them.

Charles is not a popular king but William will be.
Nothing is going to bring the RF down in your lifetime.

I don't think they will end. I'm always surprised by how many European countries still have royals. I think it will just change to more like these.

Enko · 13/02/2025 16:06

Like others here I do not think they will end within the next generation. In fact I don't think within the next 3 generations.

Ang3leyes · 13/02/2025 16:07

I have little to no knowledge of what the royal family actually do

I am not so sure. Maybe William will change and recognise he needs to do more visible work. But I doubt it.

Not being able to buy a home has nothing to do with the RF and everything to do with governments.
If obvious the RF are rich, it’s what they are. It’s of no significance in everyday life.
Why would anyone compare themselves to the RF and their wealth?

Because we all pay for it.

No they pay for themselves. You can see the facts if you look for them.

No we don’t. It’s just people who are against a monarchy like to say we do.

Really?? He is getting away with how he is because he is not the Head of State, media protect him, and Catherine had cancer.
His lack of work will not bring down the Royal Family. But I do not think he is aware enough or strategically nimble enough to recognise threats to the Royal family and respond appropriately. That is what will bring them down.

Guillotine was my first thought to be honest 😂
