The royal family

How will the Royal Family end?

The Royal Family will end. Not yet obviously. But within the next generation.

People often assume institutions like this fall slowly and gradually. We see a bit of that already happening with the reduction in "working" Royals, far less favourable poll results than when Queen Elizabeth reigned, and the willingness of the media to be more critical of the Royal Family.

I have seen people commenting assuming this means the Royal family will end soon. I think they misunderstand what is happening.

But society is changing and the deference that Queen Elizabeth attracted can no longer be taken for granted. Colonies are no longer happy for the Royals to carry out cosplay colonial tours on their soil, and increasingly they will remove the King as their Head of State. But I think when the end comes it will be sudden and unexpected. Similar to the fall of the Soviet Union. A clear weakening of the institution, but then a sudden, and shocking fall.

The aftermath will be very messy though as the Royal family try and fight for as much of the states wealth as they can, using the courts if they need to.

William will be a very popular king. Think it's safe for another century and who knows what will happen after that

That is something that interests me.
I like William and think he does some good things (like when he surprised a charity walker)
but I do wonder why people think he will make a good king. I’m what way is he different to KC ?

Quickly and soon, hopefully.

Couldn’t agree more with this.

Kinneddar · 13/02/2025 17:16

William routinely gets booed at football matches, and has no one or few turn up to see him at some public events

That's what football fans do. Boo celebrities supporting the opposition. And last week it was Celtic fans who are notoriously anti Royal. So not a great example.

I dont know what engagements you're seeing but I've never seen any visit by William which hasn't had a significant crowd unless it's been a private one.

Jamaica is removing the King as Head of State. Other countries are talking about it.

When's that happening?

JoyousGreyOrca · 13/02/2025 17:18

@Treeleaf11 I agree. There has been a tiny bit of that. The Daily Mail has an article complaining about William and Kate not attending the BAFTAs, using the BBCs claimed upset. By itself it is meaningless. But I agree, a drip drip effect would change views.

It won’t end but we will have a Royal family more in line with the European royalty.

MajorCarolDanvers · 13/02/2025 17:19

I’ve heard people make the same predictions (pretty much word for word) as you @JoyousGreyOrcafoe the last 50 years yet the RF keep on going.

OP posts:
BemusedAmerican · 13/02/2025 17:21

You need the RF as whipping boys to preserve national unity. Right now I'm really annoyed with a large percentage of the US population. I'm looking at the actions of my elected officials and will vote accordingly. I'm reviewing where I spend and donate my money.

How many people find it easier to blame the RF rather than campaign for change or put pressure on their electeds?

I find this interesting too.

I also find Kate's popularity intriguing - because it's not really something I understand from what she does. I think I mostly agree with the Hilary Mantel analysis there

At some engagements, no one turns out for William. It does not happen often. But it shows how some areas of the UK are not bothered William. And apathy and uninterest is the biggest threat of all.

Excruciating moment Prince William is greeted by almost no one during Scotland visit

Prince William arrived in Aberdeen yesterday (28 June) to help launch a project targeting homelessness, but unusually, unlike other royal visits, almost no one came out to greet him.The royal stepped out of his car into a fenced-off area as thought it...

Jamaica have started the process. I do not understand Jamaica's government enough to know how long it will take.

https://www.thenational.scot/news/24795208.jamaica-tables-bill-remove-king-charles-head-state/

So it's not a done deal? It's a bill that needs to be passed by their parliament. No referendum?

I don't care, by the way, if Jamaica or any other country want independence from the British head of state. That's completely their call. They'll just end up falling in with the Chinese or the Russians, with one of those states controlling them via their economy instead. They are in a strategically important place geographically to needle the US.

JoyousGreyOrca · 13/02/2025 17:28

@bitteroldseetrouts Nothing is a done deal until the day Charles is removed as their Head of State. But the government have clear public support. So it will pass.

Right.........

Those two articles are about the same Aberdeen homeless charity visit.

Nice. Or have a working knowledge of the UK constitution and some basic understanding of history?

Prince Philip recognised that the Monarchys existence was not automatic and they had to modernise to secure their existence.

I guarantee you, I know more about it than you ever will.

But your language was cringe, like you're writing for some cheap fan fic of "the crown"

I had to laugh at it, do you talk like that all the time?

JoyousGreyOrca · 13/02/2025 17:34

bitteroldseetrouts · 13/02/2025 17:32

As Charles is removed as the Head of State by various countries, it weakens the perceived strength of the Royal Family. And it shows it can be done.

Do not rely on Trumps support for the Royal Family. He loved Queen Elizabeth, but his support is fickle as Farage discovered.
Trump also said he would have made Princess Diana take an AIDS test and nailed her. You really do not want his type of support.

Which ‘colonies’ do we still have?

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 13/02/2025 17:40

I am a constitutional monarchist. Until such time as a reasonable alternative to a king or queen as head of state I’ll stick with what we have. I do not want anything as divisive as Brexit in my lifetime or that of my dcs.

Interesting that you are so pro Harry and Meghan OP considering how they hang onto those titles!
