Part 2 of a nice, unproblematic thread to discuss some of the fab outfits from the Duchess of Sussex, and some of the many great causes she (and Harry) and Archewell supports.

I think if you read the article, they reference the photo taken of the Sussexes walking away (the one with the Chloe patchwork dress in ivory) but they can print it because they don’t have the rights, so they printed the one from 2018 instead

edited to finish sentence 😂

Thanks for clarifying. I have to admit I only skim read it - all the stuff about 80s fashion was much more interesting 😁 It might have been the decade taste bypassed, but I bloody LOVED it. I embraced every last shoulder pad, electric colour and as for my wedding dress….let’s just say I’m really glad that social media didn’t exist then!

Roussette · 19/10/2023 06:48

Just catching up on the fashion! Oh my, yes, 80s was horrendous but I loved my wedding dress... it was deffo a Princess Di, but nicer! (I think anyway! ). Of course, it's so dated, but at the time, it was beautiful, silk lace, huge sleeves etc. and is hanging in a wardrobe in a dust bag!

I loved the 70s fashion... afghan coats, loons, cheesecloth shirts, platforms, hotpants, geometric print mini dresses...

ALittleTeawithmilk · 19/10/2023 08:00

I was just watching season 3 ep 7 of Appletv series Morning Wars and the actress, Karen Pittman, who plays Mia appeared on screen in Meghan’s gold dress made by Johanna Ortiz.

It is a beautiful dress. I didn’t particularly like it in photos of the Ms awards night, too yellowish gold I thought, but seeing it on a bigger screen you see more detail - the fabric is gorgeous, a sort of weaved texture, and the gold colour is much deeper and richer than it looks in the images from the Ms awards.

It goes to show how much depth and colour is lost by the flashes of the paparazzi cameras. (Mia wore the dress with straps which l like a little more)

(Morning Wars is a v good series imo)

this thread is making me feel old. Its bad enough when I watch the bidding room and they call something mid century....and I realise that the 70's were not a few years ago. now we have young people dissing the fashion of our youth.

(light hearted post)

Awww I loved the 80s, my playlist is full of 80s soundtracks from classics such as Topgun, Rocky and Beverley Hills Cop! (plus many more classics ) Grin And I still have an 80s buffet at special occasions 😆

Im not a huge fan of the 70s though sadly! Sorry Halo

Samcro · 19/10/2023 09:45

oh the 70's were my time, grew up in them. life was easier as no sm to catch you out. and there were discos

Yeah I’m glad I lived my younger life
without sm, I’m not very good at sm anyway and rarely go on it but i would be horrified if everything I did as a youngster ended up on it like it does now! Sm and the internet have caused so many problems as a society that it’s very toxic and no one is ever held responsible! There is report buttons on sm but apart from a few admins on other internet pages there’s nothing being done about all the abusive posts ( Meghan being a perfect example) it’s just allowed and encouraged and it’s a cesspit

MummyJ12 · 19/10/2023 11:18

I’m hugely relieved that there are no photos of me on sm in my well dodgy C&A clothes in the 80s! Even though I was little, I looked about 50!

I love Meghan’s style. It’s classic and timeless and she doesn’t tend to follow treads but wears what suits her. Love the tank and skinnies combos she’s been wearing recently (one in all black, one in all white), and also the Cult Gaia strapless dress that she wore for the closing ceremony of the IG.

There’s a documentary on Apple+ streaming atm ‘the Super Models’ - it’s a good look back at lots of things in the 80s and 90s, especially the 80s fashions worn/modelled by super models and what those around them were wearing and also hairstyles etc..

Also interesting was how the fashion industry put those women on pedestals in the 80s, only to try and tear them down in the 90s (what’s changed?) although designers like Versace and Westwood continued to appreciate their ability to sell fashion through the 90s.

There was a scene when Linda Evangelists is in a pink dress Diana could have worn in the 90s. (I recognised her style). When the designers ask her how she feels in the dress, Linda answers ‘like a Princess’ .
Also , it touches on the sexual abuses of young women too, so trigger warning for that.

Plus, feminists were questioning the whole ‘beauty myth’ during the 90s also.

The super models are often still modelling today, which is great for them but how many women in the mid 50s look like those women? Same old story there too.

I thought that white trouser suit Meghan wore the other day was dreadful. Not keen on that wide trouser look. And that boxy off the shoulder neckline wasn't flattering.

EmpressSisi · 01/11/2023 13:18

There’s a photo circulating on social media that appears to show Harry & Meghan ‘trick or treating’ with the children. Not sure if it is them or just lookalikes though.

Yeah, I just saw it.

If it is them it's nice for them.

There's literally no way to tell, it's so blurry and no features are distinguishable it could be anyone.

royalwatchewr · 02/11/2023 08:04

I would assume that trick or treating at Halloween would have to be the best possible time to stay incognito. What costumes were they wearing?

Gloriously · 02/11/2023 08:32

Think they went as W&K or was it C&C?

The photo I saw it didn't appear they were wearing costumes. Just tshirts and jeans.

EmpressSisi · 03/11/2023 09:03

I think Archie is meant to be a skeleton. Couldn’t tell with Lili, she’s wearing a big puffy pink costume.

Ive seen people on social media stating it’s not actually them though and the adults are dressed up as Harry & Meghan 🤷🏼‍♀️

Maybe it was W&K dressed up as H&M....

Crazies are gonna crazy.

I just ignore those kind of comments.

ALittleTeawithmilk · 04/11/2023 10:05

It’s quite funny that all we are seeing of Meghan is someone dressed up as her for Halloween.

I’ve been in the US on Halloween and it’s not uncommon for people to dress up as well known people. It’s a clever idea. And usually a complement.

LaMarschallin · 04/11/2023 10:52

And usually a complement.

I didn't know that it was supposed to be a compliment.

I used to go a North American-run school back in the day and have kept in touch with a few of my school friends from those times.
What I hear from them is that the "well known people" that are represented in fancy dress are those such as Trump - certainly in keeping with the "scary" idea of Halloween and Trick or Treating - rather than, say, Taylor Swift or someone else attractive and admired.

Having said that, I've no idea whether people dressed up as Meghan and Harry or not. If they did, no doubt it was meant as a compliment to them.

ALittleTeawithmilk · 04/11/2023 12:11

I’ve seen people dressed up as Cher, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Angelina Jolie. Oh I saw a couple that were dressed as JFK and his wife Jackie ( they were dressed in the style of their White House years) - ‘Jackie’ wore a matching pillbox hat snd Dior suit and looked fab, and ‘John’ had a very sharp 60s style mans suit on.

Actually people do dress up as Taylor Swift. Halloween Taylor Swift and boyfriend

Of courses, going as Trump would not be complementary. (I said, ‘usually’ a complement’ I should have said ‘often’ a compliment:

Let’s keep it positive on here about Meghan, as OP has requested. I’m enjoying the positivity of this thread.

I didn't say anything negative about Meghan.
I'll repeat my last paragraph:

Having said that, I've no idea whether people dressed up as Meghan and Harry or not. If they did, no doubt it was meant as a compliment to them.
I appreciate skins on here can be extremely thin and I tried hard not to offend.
It didn't seem unreasonable to ask about a statement that didn't seem to correlate with any of the things I've heard.

Of courses, going as Trump would not be complementary

Who knows? It might seem so to some (now that's genuinely scary Smile).

I said, ‘usually’ a complement’ I should have said ‘often’ a compliment

Yes, perhaps you should have.
I certainly wouldn't have questioned that.

(Edited to replace "some" with "any". Nobody I know has ever suggested Halloween costumes are a compliment to anyone, but that's only my limited experience.)
