I think the docu was really very effective in raising awareness of veteran issues. Like most people in Britain I'd heard of the Invictus Games, just as one's generally aware of the Paralympics, but had not necessarily engaged nor given a ton of thought to the immense challenges vets face and the scale of support they need from family members and dedicated volunteers and professionals just to survive let alone become functioning members of society (not to mention taking it out on society by becoming perpetrators of violence, as unfortunately does happen).

Telling the real-life stories of the truly inspiring vets in the docu brought it all to life in a gripping way.

So hats off to Harry for using his fame to shine a light on vets and their supporting entourage.

ALittleTeawithmilk · 07/09/2023 11:51

Yes, I think Harry has done a good thing. It was because of Harry’s involvement that I started watching the Invictus documentary, but I continued to watch it because of the Veterans. Their stories are gripping.

I will be watching some of this year’s games. On Twitter tonight I saw a pic of my country’s Invictus team arriving in Germany. And a press release from the US White House announcing that a Presidential Delegation are attending the opening ceremony on Saturday. Prior to watching the documentary I wouldn’t have even registered those two things.

Thank you for opening this thread.
Can we post about WellChild also? The awards are tonight.
It’s a charity close to my heart.

MissElinorDashwood · 07/09/2023 13:03

In terms of mental health and injuries there are parallels between Wellchild and Heart of Invictus.

ALittleTeawithmilk · 07/09/2023 13:38

@MissElinorDashwood I’ve just been reading about the Wellchild awards on the website. This year’s recipients of the awards, the kids & teenagers are so brave and extraordinary. So too are the parents and carers. I knew nothing about Well Child as I’m not from the UK. I can see there would be parallels. They have their own battles but they concern themselves with supporting other children as well. All extraordinary kids and teenagers.

I remember you posting about your daughter, and how much you both liked watching the Invictus Documentary. I can see why this charity would be close to your heart.

ALittleTeawithmilk · 07/09/2023 13:46

Harry would be good at being patron for Well Child, I think. He seems to have inherited his mother’s natural warmth and affinity for children.

MissElinorDashwood · 07/09/2023 14:57

Yes, he has been patron of WellChild for 15 years

Watch the 2023 @WellChild Awards via livestream tonight at 6:15pm GMT / 1:15pm ET / 10:15am PT.

Join us from 6:15pm this evening to watch the 2023 #WellChildAwards, in association with @GSK, LIVE. See our incredible winners receive their awards from our celebrity guests and WellChild Patron, Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex.

Roussette · 07/09/2023 15:50

Harry has attended every single WellChild Awards for 15 years apart from last year (Queen's death) and one COVID year when he attended remotely

All the footage of all these Awards ceremonies are on YouTube. It's interesting to see how he's changed, as we all do!

It's a Charity very dear to his heart, as is Invictus and they always speak very warmly of him

Daisyislazy · 07/09/2023 18:22

I've just been reading about Wellchild, how lovely

Coronateachingagain · 07/09/2023 18:46

Well you said the payroll so I would imagine you know which one you are referring to

onlylarkin · 07/09/2023 19:32

I want to be on someone's payroll! Ill take RF or Harry's. Here in my corner of the US, I am spending about $500 a week in groceries and that is just he basics. Can someone tell me how I can be a paid fan? Doesn't matter who.

Hawkins0009 · 07/09/2023 19:38

Daisyislazy · 07/09/2023 18:44

“We wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for his support. We talk a lot about how we punch above our weight as we are a small team doing a lot of good work at a high level, and we wouldn’t be where we are without the work the Duke has done to help us fundraise, attract supporters and providing a platform to shine a light on the issues being faced by families up and down the country.”

“But also for the hundreds of smiles he has put on faces of WellChild Award winners over the years. It’s such a boost for us,” he adds.

It’s a sad state of affairs when those who choose to highlight good work as opposed to spewing hate, get accused of being on the payroll.

It says so much about the character of the person asking.

MissElinorDashwood · 08/09/2023 09:37

It’s nice to see how the Invictus Games is going from strength to strength since the first games in 2014. It will be interesting to see how they move forward in the upcoming years, since receiving extra funds from The Heart of Invictus.

Invictus Games Düsseldorf, Germany:

•518 competitors
•21 Countries
•1,036 Family members
•21,800 service men&women
•13,800 schoolchildren from across Europe
•1,222 Volunteers from 30 Counties

Yes, that's what I was getting at, I knew exactly what she meant
