Looking a little uptight and exasperated when the collar is put on Charles and then the cloak? I didn't notice at the time but on sky re run I can see William looking uncomfortable and even impatient??

I have tried to find this but can't. The online recordings I have watched don't show Kate at all. Maybe cut out showing OP is right?

Bouledeneige · 07/05/2023 09:49

Alos, having met the Queen and seen her on a number of state occasions I can honestly say I thought she was genuinely a grumpy old lady (and Phillip was famously so). So bear in mind who they learnt from....

Camilla didn't look at all well to me either. She looked anxious, bewildered and confused at times. Particularly when she first came out onto the balcony and tried to usher others out. That's not the queen's job love, just look elegant and enjoy the moment, let someone else do the organising.

This thread just keeps turning up the dial on the crazy.

Have you never seen the late Queen or her mother on the balcony? Waving people into place was practically their full time job up there 🤣🤣🤣

The Queen was like a marshaller directing planes at times.

When Charles was walking back down the aisle past his family who were singing god save the king, why didn’t Edwards children bow/curtesy? Everyone else did, not sure about Harry but they didn’t.

So they shouldn’t. Ridiculous outdated custom.

rattymol · 07/05/2023 09:51

@CabernetSauvignon yes Diana hugged. But she married in and did behave differently

smilesy · 07/05/2023 09:52

I agree there is a lot of reaching for the negative by some on here. It was a ceremony that has its roots nearly a thousand years ago. Everyone is bound to come across as a bit stilted at times and will obviously have to read from cue cards as the language is archaic and unnatural to them, yet important to get right. I thought poor William’s eyes were going to pop out of his head as he had to turn them so far to the side to read, yet still stay facing his father! Also, those crowns are actually heavy in case people have forgotten. I don’t think Camilla’s looked very safe when it was first put on, so maybe that is why she was fidgety. Welby did appear to be screwing the crown in to Charles’ head 😂

It is interesting and revealing how people who watched the same footage can have such differing opinions - they are viewing through the lens of their own bias and prejudice.

To those criticising William and Charles for using cue cards - they were used all through the coronation of the late Queen. If you watch the footage you will see them. When Philip approaches the crowned Queen to take the pledge a cleric steps forward and leans down to present the cue card at Philips left.

I imagine cue cards have been used for most coronations, as it is imperative that the exact words are spoken.

Think they maybe started using cue cards after Victoria's coronation?

At one point she thought it was over, so left. Then had to be brought back as it still wasn't official.

Wish all that had been caught on vivid technicolor!!

LivelyBlake · 07/05/2023 09:55

I thought he did great. In his position I doubt I’d be able to utter a single word tbh.

Anonymouseposter · 07/05/2023 09:57

Well, if they smile they’re either smug or sniggering. If they have a straight face they’re grumpy or foul tempered. Can’t really win. The only thing I would say is that the King didn’t look very well at some points in the ceremony. I don’t have mind reading powers so I don’t know what happened before or what anyone was thinking.

GeorgeGerald · 07/05/2023 10:00

I saw and inferred this

  • William slightly nervous and using the prompt card as a way of reducing the intense emotion. I think direct eye contact for the whole thing would've been pretty intense for both of them. I didn't think he looked bored or impatient during the investiture - probably just trying to keep his emotions in check and possibly contemplating his future. Also aware that millions of people were watching his facial expressions!
  • Charles look pretty humble and emotional throughout - I think the music touches him deeply for a start.
  • Camilla looked humble and maybe even embarrassed. She look almost scared when Justin came towards her with the Crown.
Anyway, stressful and emotional day - they're human and it is ok they are grumpy now and again. Didn't see that yesterday (apart from Charles waiting in the coach) though.
OMGitsnotgood · 07/05/2023 10:05

It struck me that it must have been a difficult day for him. He's lost his grandmother; his dad is taking on a job when most people have long since retired; it'll be his job one day, how long will he have to wait? And when it's his coronation, it will likely be because his father has died. When his mother married his father, she'd have been queen one day, tho as it turned out it wouldn't have happened even if she'd lived , they divorced, then she died. This is the jumble of thoughts that would be going through my head. All the time knowing that the nation would be scrutinising every second and he'd be publicly admonished for any minor mistake .

I'm not a huge royalist but can objectively see it might have been a stressful event for him.

GG1986 · 07/05/2023 10:13

Maybe William feels like Harry and wants out, but has no choice! Being a future king might not be all its cracked up to be.

Gymnopedie · 07/05/2023 10:14

What's astonished me about this thread and some of the ones yesterday, is how many MNers know the Royal Family so intimately and can say, as fact and with absolute certainty, that William is..., Charles is..., Camilla is..., Catherine is...,. (And for ... read 'usually something derogatory').

I don't know any of the RF, let alone intimately, and I'm feeling very left out. I may sulk.

newusern1 · 07/05/2023 10:14

William and Kate have released a video of themselves getting in the car to head to the coronation. There was no shouting “hurry up we’re late! Get in the car NOW” and they seemed pretty relaxed so I think they were on schedule 🤣

SabbatWheel · 07/05/2023 10:24

I too thought Penny Mordaunt did a cracking job. She refused to wear the traditional male garb as she is the first female in the role, and had her outfit specially made. It was stunning.

Favourite music was the Byzantine choir during the presentation of the sword etc. Camilla looked bored during many parts of it and Charles looked exhausted by the end.

Chlorinatedcoronationchicken · 07/05/2023 10:26

I have gone out of my way to avoid the whole thing, as I did the funeral and the jubilee last year and every royal event since the wedding of Charles and Diana.

PW looked bored, irritated and grumpy? Probably because he's a chip off the old block. Just like pa, grannie, great grandmother and the rest. I always thought the speculation about Harry's parentage was irrelevant and bonkers, but judging his temperament compared to the rest of the RF, I'm not so sure.

Yes and no really. Obviously, there are people on these threads who may have gone to the same schools and universities as some of the royals or been members of the same private clubs or mix in the same wider social circles. Not everybody will have a uniform knowledge of the royal family just because they have wound up on the same discussion forum.

Meltinthemiddle · 07/05/2023 10:28

They were probably on tender hooks due to prince Louis. It's always stressful with kids at weddings etc trying to ensure they behave never mind in love TV, you almost want it over with so you can relax.

Oh give over

Sudeko · 07/05/2023 10:37

William hadn't kissed that purple face since around the year 2000. I hope that Charles tossed him some small change (a few million) in order to bribe him into doing it!

Gymnopedie · 07/05/2023 10:37

@Sudeko I had my tongue in my cheek^^. Sorry if it didn't come across.

thebellagio · 07/05/2023 10:41

queen Elizabeth was known for having “resting bitch face” - I remember at the London 2012 olympics she looked furious, until Zara walked out with Team Gb,

I thought the gospel choir were phenomenal and to me, it looked like Kate thoroughly enjoyed it. I actually commented to my husband how she was the only one of the congregation that seemed to show her enjoyment of them.

camila looked terrified, I thought that perhaps they hadn’t placed the crown on her securely at first, the way she kept touching her fringe, I wonder if it was painful perhaps? She also looked terrified to walk in it. When she stepped down from the throne I noticed she had to have help from Justin Welby to steady herself.

charles looked very emotional and I thought it was a lovely moment between him and William.

Everyone here insisted he would not be attending. It was the excuse given for not inviting the Sussex children.

Prince Harry is the double of Phillip, the red hair comes from The Spencers. Do people still doubt his parentage?
