Looking a little uptight and exasperated when the collar is put on Charles and then the cloak? I didn't notice at the time but on sky re run I can see William looking uncomfortable and even impatient??

Surely the gospel singers were there to be enjoyed? I was surprised how many people sat with absolute po faces when they were given such a joyous performance. She wasn’t smirking, just actually appreciating the wonderful performance.

William was taking his duties seriously. Louis was fabulous as were all the other children.

Anyone care to take a pop at Justin Welsby?

My son said Justin Welsby is "a boring, boring man who is talking too much jesus stuff".

Very "Alan Bennet's Mother" - I remember that he was interviewed once and said that she used to make up histories for people based on her own interpretations of their behaviour/ expressions. These would then become "truths" in her own mind and nothing would convince her that she wasn't right, and she would discuss people she had only seen once and never spoken to as though she knew them well.

I think we all do to some extent. (I know I do 😂)

✔️ 😂😂😂

I did think William seemed to be pissed off and just not arsed about it all. He seemed put out by the whole thing
Strange

Probably thinking "Fuck me, in another 10-20 years, I'll have to go through all this shit" and contemplating abdication.

You've clearly never seen the eleventy billion times the late Queen did exactly that.
And, indeed, her mother.

Yes you're quite right, I didn't see those "eleventy billion times". I never registered the late Queen look flustered at all, not once. Always looked utterly composed to me. Still, I guess she had a lifetimes practise.

Did you tell him the "Jesus stuff" is why he wears the fancy frocks?

He's a grumpy dickhead of a man forced to perform pomp and pageantry in front of millions. Probs not gonna look thrilled is he

This is honestly one of the best comments I have read in my time on Mumsnet.

He was our bishop before he got the top job.

He was not well liked.

It is interesting and revealing how people who watched the same footage can have such differing opinions - they are viewing through the lens of their own bias and prejudice.

To those criticising William and Charles for using cue cards - they were used all through the coronation of the late Queen. If you watch the footage you will see them. When Philip approaches the crowned Queen to take the pledge a cleric steps forward and leans down to present the cue card at Philips left.

I imagine cue cards have been used for most coronations, as it is imperative that the exact words are spoken.

I entertained myself throughout the ceremony by wondering what they were really thinking.

For large parts of it KC looked like he wanted to say "I'm a celebrity get me out of here!!" And Camilla looked bored rigid.

William probably already thinking "how many years before I'm at the centre of this shit show?"

No idea who was or wasn't irritated, frustrated etc I just think it will have been a stressful and nerve-racking day for them all.

Can you share a clip?

You're thoughts mirrored mine.. I reckon the moment they walked off the balcony they took off their robes and crowns, shook off their shoes, chucked themselves on the sofa, ordered a takeaway and thought thank god that's over and done with.. or did they have to go and host a state banquet and be gracious?

I disagree. William looked genuinely happy for his dad and at times he also looked nervous. Also not sure why he's considered a grumpy dickhead just coz he looks stressed and nervous? That's kinda stupid.

LIZS · 07/05/2023 09:25

Does it matter? Maybe he recognises that public appetite for anachronistic ritual is waning.

40thmonarch · 06/05/2023 22:32

He definitely looked bad tempered sort of bored but exasperated.

It's where he's standing in front of Charles whilst they are putting the collar for George's cape on.

Even on the swearing allegiance he doesn't make eye contact!!

Quite a lot of the time none of them made eye contact though I noticed. Even when he was being anointed or crowned, Camilla, the pages and ladies in waiting were not looking directly at Charles

twinklystar23 · 07/05/2023 09:30

I watched the choir, they were fabulous. I must of blinked when the camera flicked to Kate "stifling giggles" so it must have been a nanosecond, enough I guess for some people to make a clear interpretation that it was definitely this, she couldn't possibly be just smiling.

I'm on the fence with the monarchy. In terms of having an unelected HOS. Though my main issues wuth the RF are are the lobbying of politicians particularly in respect of inheritance tax and other laws that don't benefit them. However I really thought the coronation and it seems Charles' choices to include other faiths and represent the diversity of the UK and the oath "to serve" and the Christian pledges to protect the vulnerable, were what a society should be. So quite a special service.

If only all these values could be upheld by the great and the (Not so) good, maybe the country wouldn't be in the shit state it is now.

I think there are people on here conjuring up negativity because that’s what they wanted to see. I must have been watching a different Coronation because I didn’t see any. 🙄

This.

Like the OP I spent much of yesterday on the coach snacking rewatching the Coronation.

I didn't see anyone looking grumpy, just solemn and serious, occasional smiles. William & Charles seemed affectionate to me in their interactions. If anything, both seemed a bit weighed down by what it meant to them both.

But it seems easy to project what you hope happened onto things. If you feel negative about the RF, you see negative interactions.

She was. She did the same when the African-American pastor did his sermon at Harry and Meghan's wedding. She clearly finds black people a source of amusement - she seems hugely unpleasant.

I thought at first she was laughing, but when I rewound it back, she was giving them genuine smiles. The gospel singers were the best bit yesterday, I thought they were great. However the pastor at Harry amd Megan's wedding- well, he did go on and on. Nothing to with his heritage/being black.

Grin

He's had diarrhoea this morning, too - has had me up from yon time (it wasn't a coronation quiche BTW - just an ordinary cheese one).

If it had had the broad beans in it, the roughage might have firmed things up a bit!
On a side note why does my autocorrect seem to think B-road beans makes more sense?

Bouledeneige · 07/05/2023 09:41

I do find it odd how much people are reading into their expressions. I didn't see anyone being grumpy and I thought Kate was smiling warmly at the gospel singers. William was clearly reading his words out as everyone else was throughout from Welby to Charles.

I think that they were all very solemn and serious and that maybe Charles and William have a bit of a resting bitch face when serious. I know I have when I'm serious or expressionless. The only one I thought could have managed their composure better was Camilla who seemed to find it difficult to look calmly serious and not twitchy.

@40thmonarch some people spend lots of time looking for things to moan about King Charles III and Prince William. Why? What's with the constant moaning and criticism?

Maybe some people find the whole spectacle a bit obscene given the trying times we’re living through.

Given that the royal family have often been found to be racist I wonder if Charles was hoping to show he that he wasn’t. Not that long ago Buckingham palace wouldn’t employ anyone black. Awful institution imo.
