The royal family

Meghan has been named one of 25 most influential women by FT

"Meghan Markle has become a symbol of resilience for many silenced women. Specifically speaking, for women of colour and, even more specifically, mixed-race and black women. Her experience within the royal family resonated with those who have had to navigate historically white, elitist institutions that are, at best, not built with them in mind and, at worst, outwardly hostile.

The royal family is an establishment largely maintained through silence and complicity. It’s this, in part, that makes Meghan’s choice to use her voice so powerful. This year she launched a podcast, Archetypes, where she interrogates the labels used to contain and inhibit women – fitting, given the projection and smears she has endured from the press. For the black community in particular, it was hard to watch her demonisation by the British media and public. But seeing her come into her own, and use her platform to speak about what matters to her, has sent a message even louder than she may have intended."

Good for her, pretty deserved imo

WinnieTheW0rm · 02/12/2022 15:42

I like their reasoning, but I'm mildly surprised.

The podcasts don't seem to have had that much traction, and she hasn't really done much else.

You didn't post a share token, so I wasn't able to access the full article, or see who else is on the list

FeelWellEnoughToTellYou · 02/12/2022 15:43

With all the stick she gets I think she deserves it for just getting up every morning.

well said

Reeks of paid for PR to me. MM has never been silenced and does not recognise her incredible privilege compared to those she claims to give voice to. Her whole business is based on focusing on the past, whilst claiming to be building the future. It's nauseating and disingenuous.

RoseAndRose · 02/12/2022 16:33

Looking at the version of the FT list that's available on Twitter, they seem to have invited a group of people to each name an inspiring woman.

I'll add a list of the 25, and who nominated them, shortly (it'll take quite a bit of copying/retyping). I'd be quite interested on views on the whole list (and how many of them are familiar - many quite unknown to me)

She deserves it for all she has achieved. Must have been such shock to find that she'd married into a historically white, elitist institution.

Yes, I expect she was astounded to discover that.

I don't fully understand why but I just don't feel like I like her..she comes across as a selfish person - Whether that's because of her upbringing as an only child or her success as an actress which separated her more from her family, she just seems to be quite self-centred, but in a way that she likes to come across that she's caring.

Is she influential? I'm not sure, unless you want an influence to be an actress turned royal who then feels the odd one out (when any American would feel the same) and decides to dramatically remove herself and her husband (the actual royal) from his family and support system.
And if you want to be influenced to do a Netflix series for lots of money - will they give any of this to charity?

I just don't buy it, But I do get that she had a hard time with the British press. Maybe they've just aired too much dirty laundry for us all to see, and they keep going.

AttilaTheUOkHun · 02/12/2022 16:57

Really? One random persons opinion and the FT will call you influential?

AttilaTheUOkHun · 02/12/2022 16:59

Hmm
lollyloo88 · 02/12/2022 17:01

@AttilaTheUOkHun - sorry if you are an only child 😬

Simplelivingisharderthanitlooks · 02/12/2022 17:05

Well... influential isn't necessarily positive is it?

That's all I can take from the award.

I can think of many, many influential people whose values and morals infuriate me. Meghan Markle should not be on that list - it changes and demeans the award for others.

AttilaTheUOkHun · 02/12/2022 17:07

lollyloo88 · 02/12/2022 17:01

@AttilaTheUOkHun - sorry if you are an only child 😬

I'm not and Meghan has half-siblings so she did have to "share" her dad/home so the bullshit you're spouting really doesn't make sense.

xalo · 02/12/2022 17:20

Dare I hope that they're all women ( of the old-fashioned kind)

DrMarciaFieldstone · 02/12/2022 17:21

These awards don’t change anything in the general perception of her

Ohnonevermind · 02/12/2022 17:22

@AttilaTheUOkHun

meghan said ‘she was an only child’ to Oprah Winfrey and that’s ‘her truth’. We know she doesn’t lie so obviously her siblings don’t really exist

careful, you’ll be reported by the stans

Off-topic, but I'm delighted to see Tsitsi Dangarembga on there.
