The royal family

Meghan has been named one of 25 most influential women by FT

"Meghan Markle has become a symbol of resilience for many silenced women. Specifically speaking, for women of colour and, even more specifically, mixed-race and black women. Her experience within the royal family resonated with those who have had to navigate historically white, elitist institutions that are, at best, not built with them in mind and, at worst, outwardly hostile.

The royal family is an establishment largely maintained through silence and complicity. It’s this, in part, that makes Meghan’s choice to use her voice so powerful. This year she launched a podcast, Archetypes, where she interrogates the labels used to contain and inhibit women – fitting, given the projection and smears she has endured from the press. For the black community in particular, it was hard to watch her demonisation by the British media and public. But seeing her come into her own, and use her platform to speak about what matters to her, has sent a message even louder than she may have intended."

If being influential means having swishy hair and lots of money plus heavily "curated" amazing lifestyle plus a "story" about triumph over adversity.

Yup I reckon MM is very much an influencer in the modern sense of the word. I really thought she was classier and more intelligent than that.

ginghamstarfish · 02/12/2022 21:51

FFS! Pass the sickbag.

What has she won? She’s almost universally derided.

I think this is closer to reality: www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ellievhall/bot-sentinel-meghan-markle-prince-harry-twitter

Figgygal · 02/12/2022 22:32

Sycophantic nonsense

Propertyindisrepair · 02/12/2022 22:33

I think she’s clearly been very very poorly treated by the daily Mail etc who weirdly have it in for her - probably reflective of a sector of uk society

i also imagine it’s an extraordinarily toxic and dysfunctional family to marry into

bjt the thing is - she continues to call herself a princess and her childrens book and so much other stuff is under her royal name

the ONLY reason they have a profile isnbecUs they’re royal. And they never seem to include themselves in elites who are unelected when they bang on about democracy

Ohnonevermind · 02/12/2022 20:33

@Marulatree

Shes winning at being a laughing stock all right. The stakes are so high 🤣 in her own deluded mind

Well she appears to influence you and others like yourself to get up each day to take to your keyboards to write about her. That could be described as influence – at best, or compulsion at its very worst. Either way, she appears to be a much relevant figure in the lives of those with much time to spare. Speaking of, perhaps you may want to supplement your reading with her husband’s forthcoming title. That, along with all their other lucrative business ventures, are certainly going to keep them well attired in Chanel and all those wonderful fashion labels that you (judging by previous posts) seem to adore – including Dior 😅I think MM is laughing all the way to the bank 😂

DrMarciaFieldstone · 02/12/2022 22:41

I’m talking about real life, not Twitter.

Heavyraindropsarefallingonmyhead · 02/12/2022 22:43

I love some of these nominations (and I'm busy googling the ones I don't know)

My highlights are Olia Hercules (who is pretty phenomenal herself) nominating Oleksandra Matviichuk and Christiane Amanpour nominating the women of Iran.

Thank you @RoseAndRose for transcribing the names on here

Ohnonevermind · 02/12/2022 22:46

@marula

They are wonderful, they have brought so many people together to laugh at their deluded self importance. I’m going to embroider H’s on all my blankets to try to be more like her.

she’s a blanket inspiration to us all.

antelopevalley · 02/12/2022 22:50

Interesting how many of you are interested in her and what she is doing.

@antelopevalley i know it’s not as riveting as Camilla lifting sleeves and who is wearing wedding rings, but we’re muddling along

Lallaw · 02/12/2022 22:57

I don't think 56 comments in over 7 hours is that interesting.... But whatever floats your boat!

antelopevalley · 02/12/2022 23:04

I think it is interesting that there are so many posters who say they detest her but can't stop talking about her.

I don’t detest her. She fascinates me.

Same goes for posters who seem to hate most of the rest of the RF, but start threads on them almost daily.

antelopevalley · 02/12/2022 23:10

I don't hate them. As I frequently say they are strangers.
I do want the institution of Royalty abolished. Viva Le Republique

On a previous thread, you said you are a royalist and you follow the Royals 🤔

DunkingMyDonuts · 02/12/2022 23:13

Sad she only became influential due to her marriage. It would hold more weight if by the time she had got married at 35 she had done it by other means.

Doubt if any of the other women on the list became influential due to who their spouse was

Ohnonevermind · 02/12/2022 23:14

@smilesy
i remember the op writing that too

antelopevalley · 02/12/2022 23:14

No I did not. I said I read lots about the Royals. I have never said I am a Royalist. I have said I used to be fine with them and had no issue with them at all. Until I started to find out more.

Who needs misogyny when women are each other's worst enemies, eh?

The vitriol spewed at Megan Markle here is despicable.

Whatever you think of her, she has a right to her own life and her own thoughts and to express them.
Yes, she married into the royal family, doesn't mean you own her.

Get a life, instead of bitching about her.

She's American! At least she has the balls to say what she thinks in public. Not like you lot.

Maybe Queenie - god bless her, amazing - had the stiff upper lip as is the English way - never complain, never explain. After all, that was the done thing 100 years ago.

Doesn't mean Megan Markle has to toe the line of an archaic institution. Not like Kate. Same old, same old.

We are heading into 2023!

You only have to look at the recent Buckingham Palace faux-pas to see how out of touch that institution is....... while collecting their taxes

Kind of like voting over and over again for the Tories who trash the country while syphoning away their riches - the true reason for Brexit.

Isn’t MM lucky that despite doing nothing for 2 years she’s getting all these awards just in time for her Netflix series, isn’t it an an amazingly lucky coincidence

🤣🤣🤣

This ^

I can't bear MM - not because she is mixed-race. That I really don't care about.

I feel she is totally manipulative and all about her. I genuinely believe she married at very short notice into the British Royal Family expecting that anything she wanted would be accommodated. Harry is to blame for this - he clearly didnt communicate well on pretty much anything - either before marriage to her about expectations, or afterwards to her or his family. I think she is controlling and he is weak. So the move away to the States ultimately will damage him more than her. But yes these fake awards just as a large broadcaster launches a new expensive series are seriously questionable like most of the fake narrative.

Ohnonevermind · 02/12/2022 23:44

I’m guessing Netflix will be running some nice big ads in the FT and the guardian. Lucky them to get the ad revenue.

Orangesatsuma · 02/12/2022 23:48

Well she has been influential hasn’t she, for better or worse depending on your opinion.

The British tabloids have written articles about her on an almost daily basis, Piers Morgan seems to be obsessed with her and she has shaken up the Royal Family.

Must be something about her.
