Elite education instils demeanour and confidence that commoners have to fake Smile

OVienna · 26/01/2020 20:19

Dandy indeed she did. Northwestern is no joke. I actually wonder if my expectations for her are unfairly high because of it. Sometimes in the US if you've been to a school like that you do wonder if your job is "good enough" to justify the education you've received, especially considering how much it costs. Some of her early acting jobs could have attracted sneering and I do wonder if the Suits role was "enough" ot she felt she needed to do the humanitarian work. Not saying she didnt mean it but there could be quite a lot of self-induced pressure here.

Chocpear · 26/01/2020 20:23

Regarding the Royal’s speeches, I have presumed that they employ a speechwriter/PR person but may verbally say which points they wish to cover to whoever is writing it. Perhaps I am underestimating the Royal’s contribution to speeches?

IIRC Kate studied history of art. William geography (?) & Charles went to oxbridge. But can’t remember what he studied.

William switched from History of Art to Geography allegedly because the class was chock full of wannabe American princesses.

OVienna · 26/01/2020 20:24

I can well imagine that private school LA environment. You made your first billion yet? What? No tech IPO? Lots of one upmanship around. It's actually one of the reasons I thought she'd navigate the RF role well. I expected her to have developed a thicker skin along the way.

GracefulHippo · 26/01/2020 20:25

I agree that there are different types of intelligence, there is quite a good book by Gardner called “multiple intelligences”. Academia is not for everyone and there could be many reasons for that, none of them derogatory.

I disagree that it is annoying for experts in climate change to listen to PH though. Nobody thinks that he is a noted expert on the topic. Given his unique position and enthusiasm, he was able to provide a huge amount of glamour to any event, which had massive benefits to his selected causes . I think the experts understand that. That is why it is sad for his charities that he currently isn’t part of the RF.

Obviously that is not a reason for him to force himself to do something he feels unable to do.

derxa · 26/01/2020 20:36

I always wonder about this "how boring it is to cut ribbons on a rainy day in Scunthorpe" scenario. To me everyone is interesting. Not to old Megsy though.
It was heartening to me that Kate and William had a great reception in Bradford. The drums were banging for them.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 26/01/2020 20:50

If you meant Charles, he studied archaeology, anthropology ("arch and anth") and history at Trinity College Cambridge. He studied the Welsh Language at Aberystwyth in his second year.

DandyAndFine · 26/01/2020 21:35

@OVienna I had an offer from Northwestern a long time ago, didn’t take it for circumstantial reasons but it’s an excellent school and a very small part of me wishes I had gone there!

CanIHaveATiaraPlease · 26/01/2020 21:43

Of course thank you cat

StartupRepair · 26/01/2020 21:53

I spent an amazing 3 hours last night at one of Elton John's farewell concerts. He had lots of photo montages scattered through it with a few photos of Harry. One of the songs, about not hating people, had a wedding photo of H and M in it. So Elton is still on side.

bluebell34567 · 26/01/2020 22:45

i wonder if there was something like a pre-nup and if she was told that she wouldnt continue to be a duchess if she divorces, would she still marry him?
why when divorced are they able to carry that title?

CleansUpDragonPoo · 26/01/2020 22:46

There's a programme that's on Sky News sometimes where they have the Editors of the Daily Mail and the Mirror on discussing stuff. The two seem to frequently disagree with each other - in fact it's usually a 'whose dick is bigger debate', but both of them do seem rather clued in to what's going on.

That's the daily half hour Press Preview at 1030pm and 1130pm, DeTwamps. Pierce and Maquire are on Wednesday nights, and I agree with this statement I found on google: "There have been many comic double acts on television over the years, but few can rival the real-life comic antics of the right-wing Andrew Pierce (Daily Mail) and the left-wing Kevin Maguire (Daily Mirror) when they get together on Sky News to review the following morning’s papers".

It gets quite lively and the presenter often struggles to keep control, but it's usually fun and reasonably fact-based. Much more interesting than actually reading either of their publications!

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 26/01/2020 22:55

Andrew and Kevin are really good personal friends. A lot of what we see on television is just for show.

peridito · 26/01/2020 23:41

Please can someone tell me what Meghan has said about not liking the UK ?

There have been a number of references to this on here ,as below ,but I still have no idea what she has said .

"uk people didn't support me" ( not my speech marks )

label and cast aspersions so publicly on the people and country who welcomed you and financed you.

She knows the things she's said are not true

Then they get told she hates it here, the RF were unwelcoming, we're all racist etc etc

Triglesoffy · 26/01/2020 23:43

Tory Boy Grin

darktriad · 27/01/2020 00:07

I agree Harry is possibly neurodivergent as was Diana, could explain their academic struggles IMO

CleansUpDragonPoo · 27/01/2020 00:22

Quote from a journalism college report about a visit from Pierce and Maguire: "The warmth that radiates from these two old friends is a gentle reminder that fiercely opposing views can live in (relative) harmony."

Something to note perhaps!

peridito · 27/01/2020 00:34

good quote CleansUp

user1477391263 · 27/01/2020 00:41

Happily I don’t have friends who tear into a (female POC) public figure

You mean, they'll tear into other types of people, but if someone is female and non-white that's not allowed?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 27/01/2020 00:42

That's very true of those two CleansUp. There is lots of joshing and they defend their positions robustly but they are always kind to each other.

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 27/01/2020 00:45

Princess Diana was not neuro divergent.

user1477391263 · 27/01/2020 00:46

*I would have been great if it had panned out the way we all thought it would.
New blood the Fab Four etc *

IK,R? I remember feeling really happy about the engagement when I heard about it. It's been a really downer watching how things have panned out.

.......
That's all very well but Harry didn't do badly by most standards, he was just less academic than some of his peers.

I've just been reading the news in which Thomas Markle says he is prepared to testify against his daughter and how it will 'all come out'. What on earth will come out and what has she done that he feels he has to testify against her? I can't envisage any situation in which he'll be called as a witness. What could he say anyway - my daughter was hurt that I co operated with the media, etc. So would any daughter!

Absolute pond life, a man with a grudge and no class. Any sympathy I had for him earlier - when I thought he had merely been naive and manipulated by the media - has gone.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 27/01/2020 01:40

I don't know if we are reading the same article Bluerussian but it seemed to me that he isn't keen to testify but feels that, if he has to, he wants to clear up untrue things that have been said about him. After all, it's H&M who initiated this court case over M's letter and thereby involved him.

The reason he allowed any of the letter to be published (and he didn't give the whole letter to the media) was because M's friends had leaked false information as to the contents which placed him in a negative light.

I don't blame him for wanting to clear his name under those circumstances. I think she's forced his hand.
