Bizarre yet impressive things your cat has done

We have a maine coon and he is always 'into things'. He cannot be trusted around meats (runs away with said meat in his mouth) or small boppable objects (that he can also run away with in his mouth).

I left my washing up gloves to dry last night and I woke up this morning to find the 'end' (the sleeve bit) of one glove in the hallway. Went into the kitchen and glove was hanging up with the end of it missing. Just why?

He never fails to surprise me and he tickles me. What was going on in that furry brain of his?

What odd things has your cat done that tickles you?

Brought me a Christmas ham.

It was not mine

Perhaps not bizarre but one Christmas I came downstairs to find a fuzzy red wing on my stair, I knew it belonged to the fabric robin tree bauble. No sign of the robin. The following year I found the one winged robin under the sofa. I believe she intentionally hid the body.

I still put the robin on the tree, visible to her but inaccessible, much to her displeasure. She kept the wing as a trophy.

😂 That sounds like something ours would do.

But YABU for putting it up high. Abominable behaviour towards her and I heard she’s put in multiple calls to RSPCA about that!

My new cat likes playing the guitar. For real. My guitar is hanging on the wall above the cat tree. It's always been there and my other cats have never paid it any attention. New boy caught it accidentally while fighting himself to the death on top of the tree. It made a noise. He froze then hit the strings. It made more noise. Now when he's on the cat tree he randomly and deliberately hits the strings because he's fascinated with the noise it makes. Weirdo!

Edited

A guitar playing cat. Now I have heard it all!!

My cat chews anything rubber. Every pair of crocs in the house has teeth marks in, and he has devoured countless ear phones (the added taste of ear wax seems to enhance the sensation for him...) He will also lick your ears, given the chance, which is not a pleasant sensation!

Ours is so similar! Tiny teeth marks js standard and he likes the rubber bits off earphones. Also doesn’t mind ear wax 😂

We don't have a cat flap but thats no bother to my cat as he has learnt how to use the door knocker. He doesnt just knock the once he does it twice like a human would. Very clever boy.

7 squirrels and a sparrowhawk are lifetime highlights for one of my dcats.

Mine once caught a mole, but a sparrowhawk?? How big is your cat?

dudsville · 21/11/2023 18:08

@MrTiddlesTheCat , your post reminded me of a thing my mum's cat does. Mum has wind chimes hanging from the ceiling in front of a window inside the living room. Her indoor cat loves sitting on a table especially placed for her so that she can look out the window (every window is catered for similarly!). Occassionally she reaches up and just tinkles the chimes. It's adorable.

Ours chews elastic. We have to shut anything with elastic cord away in a cupboard.

When she was younger, we weren't so clued up about this, so when a long piece of elastic went missing we weren't sure where it had gone. Until ElastiCat started wandering around with half of it hanging out of her arse. She had eaten it. I was the one with the joyous task of gently pulling on the elastic until eventually it pinged out of her arse. It was long, impressive and very smelly. ElastiCat was fortunately unharmed, though a bit annoyed at the indignity.

😂😂😂 I knew where this was going once I read “eats elastic.” I laughed out loud.

poor cat.

Sort of reminds me when ours was due a trim with the groomer and was dragging his arse on the floor. Odd behaviour for him. Turned out he had a WHOLE SHIT stuck in his bum fur!

(btw just want to say I do keep on top of his bum hair trims even though he gets groomed and this was a bit of a freak accident)

My Cat steals cat food pouches from neighbours houses. Brings them into our garden, rips them open and eats them.

Wazzzzzuuuuuuup · 21/11/2023 12:19

When my cat was a kitten it jumped through the kitchen window carrying a jumbo battered sausage. It was still hot so I can only imagine the cat nabbed it straight out of the fish and chip newspaper.

VERY good

My cat leaves dead mice etc at the door for me, nothing unusual there, but when I shovel them up and throw them in the wood she chases me and bites my ankles, obviously I'm ungrateful for the corpse😏

YABU

My ginger boy, for the first 3 years, stole socks, and gardening gloves from every neighbours garden he could manage. My kitchen would have at least 2 new items each morning. Then he just sort of grew out of it. Now he carries around 3 toy mice, one at a time around the house, crying loudly as he does it to let us know how clever he is. My other cats just roll their eyes and call him a tit.

That is adorable. Mine is a cryer too. V sensitive boy.

@Elisheva have you considered a small knighting ceremony for him re bath-gate? A no fuss affair of course but it’s what he deserves.

We have have been gifted many thankfully mostly dead birds and shrews

But the whole fully grown pheasant through the cat flap was a surprise.

Gears up for a jump in a doorway, ears back, looking up, lots of bum wiggles, and then jumps straight up, turning over in midair and landing back where she started.

When she was a kitten she would jump at any hand that touched a door jamb, amd regularly attempted to jump up standard lamps and a tall fan I have.

She's a Siberian. I'm guessing there's a long heritage of living in trees somewhere deep inside that little walnut brain.

She also casually tips over waste paper baskets.

re the jumping how strange! What a visual! Does she turn as in a forward roll in mid air or is it a horizontal roll?

My bengals open the cupboards, fridge, freezer and doors with handles, taps. We have now got child lock on cupboards fridge and freezer, changed door handles to knobs and got a lock on the taps too.

They also play fetch

TotalOverhaul · 21/11/2023 18:29

DCat once caught a river vole and carried it home like a kitten, unharmed, dropped it right in the middle of the living room rug for me and sat beside it, super proud that he had found me a playmate for the weekend as DH had taken DC to visit relatives while I had a work deadline. DCat was adamant this was my toy and he wouldn't ruin my fun by helping me catch it. He sauntered in and out of the room while I spent the next three hours trying to catch the vole to release it. He was clearly thinking: Result. I gave her hours of fun!

CMOTDibbler · 21/11/2023 18:35

@CatonmyKeyboard he is big - about 10kg of solid muscle and is a very dedicated hunter. We back onto community woodland and then open farmland so he has lots of opportunity.
A previous cat liked to lurk around in the woodland and then run up trees to scare people. We got complaints about it, but I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do apart from have words with the cat

Ooh, my Mum’s cat used to catch moles. We thought he must have spent a lot of time patiently watching molehills.

CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan · 21/11/2023 18:49

10kg?! Are you sure he’s a cat and not a jaguar, CMOTDibbler?

Ours is now old and lazy, but when she was younger she learnt to open the cupboard under the stairs where her spare food was kept (we keep the open packet in a cat-proof plastic box) and cunningly ripped into the back of the spare bag, so nothing was visible when we opened the door. We didn’t twig until DH caught her sauntering out licking her lips one day. She was most displeased when we moved the food!

princefamilypaper · 21/11/2023 19:26

Brought a pork chop in the first time he went out on his own when he was a kitten. God knows where he got it from!

princefamilypaper · 21/11/2023 19:28

Oh also my husbands taught him to play hide and seek. Dh will hide (usually behind the curtains or door) cat will jump on curtains to test to see if he's there 🙄 then run off and hide behind the door or under the sofa. They take it in turns and it's very cute watching the cat walk round trying to find him

SausageShop · 21/11/2023 19:33

Not at all impressive, just a bit weird... my girl loves sponges. She loves to throw them around and rip little bits off, makes a right mess! She does the same with cardboard and paper. Little weirdo.

Her brother went missing 2 years ago sadly but he was a fantastic hunter. He once left the bottom half of a squirrel on the doormat, I thought someone was sending me a sinister message 😂

I've always had cats growing up - one used to wrap herself around my head at night and lick my eyelids.

When I was about 14 my friend and I were idly rolling a tennis ball to each other while the cat was getting excited. Then we decided to throw it and the cat suddenly did a huge backflip - when he didn't catch it he walked off as if it never happened 😂 same cat used to sit on top of doors.

Such odd little beings aren't they!
