Bizarre yet impressive things your cat has done

We have a maine coon and he is always 'into things'. He cannot be trusted around meats (runs away with said meat in his mouth) or small boppable objects (that he can also run away with in his mouth).

I left my washing up gloves to dry last night and I woke up this morning to find the 'end' (the sleeve bit) of one glove in the hallway. Went into the kitchen and glove was hanging up with the end of it missing. Just why?

He never fails to surprise me and he tickles me. What was going on in that furry brain of his?

What odd things has your cat done that tickles you?

Toasty Boy Cat learned how to open the bin in the kitchen by launching himself off a nearby chair onto the lid and jumping off again

AnneElliott · 21/11/2023 19:44

My cat doesn't like whistling. If you whistle in her presence she gives you a hard stare and then jumps up and smacks your mouth with her paw. It is so cute - but she won't do it if I'm filming!!!

BarneyRumbleton · 21/11/2023 19:47

Mine managed to use the touch control on the hob with his paw and almost burnt the house down. We now switch it off at the wall.

Just as I was applying a slice of ham to my buttered bread for my lunchtime sandwich, my cat launched himself from across the room and in one swift move, at the speed of lightning, he swiped that slice of ham clean from my fingers and had already disappeared out the cat flap with it before I'd even had chance to register why my sandwich was still ham-less!

It was an almost Matrix-like move. In one moment I had ham, and a millisecond later it had just gone, with the cat flap swinging rapidly in the background.

The little bleeder then sat in front of the kitchen window looking at me with a satisfied smugness while eating my bloody ham. He was so proud of himself. Prick.

He also used to steal whole eggs from somewhere and bring them home. Totally intact. No idea how he managed to get his chops around an egg, and climb trees and clamber through bushes and over walls to deliver them to the back porch in perfect condition.

He was a sod. A needy clingy bugger who only had eyes for me and hated anyone else. But he's passed away now, about 6 yrs ago. I still miss that sod. He was gorgeous.

We have ‘Tap Cat’ who gets ridiculously excited whenever a tap is turned on. He jumps up to sit next to it and paws at the water. I’ve never know a cat actually like water before.
Next is ‘Soft Cat’ who loves to be turned upside down and have his belly rubbed. He will sit like this for ages purring. He will catch the odd mouse but brings them in and lets them go. He was hand reared and I assume he had a squeaky mouse toy. If he catches the mouse again he will press down on it till it squeaks and then let it go. He will not kill or harm it.
Then we have ‘Killer Cat’ who brings in huge baby birds (presumably pigeons) moles, squirrels and huge rabbits. These he kills and eats, however if ‘Soft Cat’ brings anything in he won’t touch it. He will watch where he knows it is fascinated but if it appears he just watches with a “not my mouse, not my problem” look on his face.

My new cat likes playing the guitar. For real. My guitar is hanging on the wall above the cat tree. It's always been there and my other cats have never paid it any attention. New boy caught it accidentally while fighting himself to the death on top of the tree. It made a noise. He froze then hit the strings. It made more noise. Now when he's on the cat tree he randomly and deliberately hits the strings because he's fascinated with the noise it makes. Weirdo!

Edited

You definitely need to record him - you could sell genuine Cat Music!

Catsmere · 21/11/2023 20:16

My late Katie was a champion bird catcher (nine in a fortnight was her record). I once saw her catch a bird on the wing. Stupid young wattlebird was sitting squawking at her from a branch about five feet off the ground, while she was sitting under it getting ready to spring. Bird took off just as she did, and she caught it, and a bunch of leaves.

Cats, eh?

Why do cats have a thing for swiss roll? When I was a kid my DM laid the table for Sunday tea, including a very nice swiss roll. Dad had been decorating so we went upstairs to admire his handiwork and when we came back downstairs a couple of minutes later, three quarters of the swiss roll had gone.

Another time, we started finding things like ping pong balls, odd socks and raw crinkle-cut chips outside our back door. We didn't have a cat at the time, but our neighbour did, and their cat had randomly decided that we were in need of presents.

sixteenfurryfeet · 21/11/2023 20:21

Oh yeah - I forgot this one. We were invited round NDN's house once for a party, and I enquired why their budgie's cage was chained firmly to the wall. NDN had to explain that they'd needed to resort to that as our cat kept going into their house, launching himself at the cage and knocking it off its table onto the floor, in the hope of a feathered lunch. Whoops. Blush

Bought me a bottle of bicycle oil

Discarded collar on neighbours bed

Terfenheimerama · 21/11/2023 20:32

I had a friend who bought an expensive Labrador retriever puppy from a breeder but failed to teach him to retrieve. At all. Meanwhile, my current cat was new to me and had to stay indoors at first; she taught herself to throw a little ball down my steep stairs, rush down to kill it, and then carry it back up to do it again. I loved breaking my friend’s heart by sending her a video of that.

In her previous foster home, cat had worked out how to open the back door (by jumping on the adjacent counter and bearing down on the handle), so that she and all the other rescue cats could get outside.

I love her so much.

@CatonmyKeyboard he is big - about 10kg of solid muscle and is a very dedicated hunter. We back onto community woodland and then open farmland so he has lots of opportunity.
A previous cat liked to lurk around in the woodland and then run up trees to scare people. We got complaints about it, but I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do apart from have words with the cat

Complaints. 😂 All I can think is they clearly aren’t cat people. I don’t know how I could take them seriously. Of course it acts like a dick and bothers people… it’s a cat?

This thread is full of intelligent and self riteous cats and just reminds me why I love them so much

Not at all impressive, just a bit weird... my girl loves sponges. She loves to throw them around and rip little bits off, makes a right mess! She does the same with cardboard and paper. Little weirdo.

Her brother went missing 2 years ago sadly but he was a fantastic hunter. He once left the bottom half of a squirrel on the doormat, I thought someone was sending me a sinister message 😂

I've always had cats growing up - one used to wrap herself around my head at night and lick my eyelids.

When I was about 14 my friend and I were idly rolling a tennis ball to each other while the cat was getting excited. Then we decided to throw it and the cat suddenly did a huge backflip - when he didn't catch it he walked off as if it never happened 😂 same cat used to sit on top of doors.

Such odd little beings aren't they!

All of that = adorable 🧡

How do we nominate this thread for classics?

One of mine went through a mole-slaying phase. God only knows how he managed it. Did he wait for hours on end beside mole hills before going in for the kill? Who knows. All I know is I had to remove around eight dead moleys from my hearth rug where they were proudly displayed. Except for one which he must have dropped. I came home to find all three of them sitting in front of the bookcase with eyes like daggers. When I finally moved it, I discovered a poor live mole who was absolutely petrified.

My cat once managed to bury himself in snow. I only found him because his black tail was sticking out of the snow 😆
His little sister stole a rasher of bacon from the frying pan whilst it was cooking. She managed to singe the whiskers off one side of her face 🙄. They did grow back though.

MaMisled · 21/11/2023 21:48

Dragged a neighbours massive koi carp through our cat flap. We kept that very quiet.

fetchacloth · 21/11/2023 21:50

Years ago I had a cat that stole small items of laundry from the washing line and brought them through the cat flap into the house. She also stole from other people's washing lines and I had to try and reunite these items with their various owners. That was interesting when most of it was underwear 😳

It was, he gave me a right scare. I thought I'd lost him. He thought it was hilarious.

I have to unplug the kettle for the same reason 🙄

SuperGinger · 21/11/2023 22:00

Mine aged almost 17 years old recently learned how to open the bin, I had chucked out a few chicken bones after we had a roast, it's the sort of bin that you tap on top to open, anyway the silly girl jumped in and got stuck as there wasn't much in it.

haggisandcoos · 21/11/2023 22:03

Dcat supervises me in the kitchen. When she was a little kitten, she taught herself to climb up the drawer handles to reach the countertop and she still does this, even though she could make it in one jump now. She sits at the side of the sink with her tail in the water while I do the dishes. We love each other dearly but she knows that I belong to her.

longtompot · 21/11/2023 22:13

One of our old boys when they were I think under 5, brought in a pigeon through the cat flap. Alive!
