Please don't flame me I'm here for advice.

My 'house' cat has just given birth to 1 kitten, I did not know she was expecting, no real weight gain and she is a longhair so has disguised this well. The 1s

Sorry posted too soon.

The 1st kitten came an hour ago, will there be anymore? They are both settled mum sleeping kitten feeding. Is it unusual to have only 1?

I have been waiting on a call back from the vet.

Very unusual to only have one. Has she escaped recently? I think a vet visit would be money well spent, shame it’s a Sunday. Hope the vet rings back soon.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 30/07/2023 16:40

Is she a normal moggybecause some breeds do have smaller litters. Think my Birman was one of three.

KirstenBlest · 30/07/2023 16:41

It will probably be a small litter, 1-3. She has probably sneaked out without you knowing or a tom cat has sneaked in.

SmirnoffIceIsNice · 30/07/2023 16:41

My cat years ago had only one kitten the first time. Second time she had three sand thereafter it was off to the vet to be spayed! It's not unheard of.

SoCentralRain · 30/07/2023 16:42

I think if it’s their first litter they can have only one but don’t be surprised if another makes an appearance soon…

Pics please when you get a minute 😍

SoCentralRain · 30/07/2023 16:43

Oh and get her neutered as soon as the vet recommends!!

TokyoSushi · 30/07/2023 16:46

Oh my, that's quite a surprise. It could just be one, but more likely to be 2 or 3. Agree with the vet, especially as it's unexpected but it seems that you're doing that.

And yes, pictures please when you can - good luck!

MrsCarson · 30/07/2023 16:56

I'm just here for the pictures.

ChelseaGem · 30/07/2023 16:58

Kitty pix please!

Yusay · 30/07/2023 17:01

Congratulations! Please don’t whisk her off to the vet, the stress is exactly the opposite of what she needs. She needs a quiet dark place to relax and bond with the kitten. She’s probably already found such a place to give birth. If she doesn’t seem to know what to do and tbe kitten isn’t feeding, you can gently lift the kitten so it’s mouth is near a nipple. But really it will all be fine she just needs rest, peace and good nutrition.

A first litter is usually small, a litter of one is unusual, but not super rare.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 30/07/2023 17:04

Doesn't sound like a house cat if it’s got a kitten.

Its ok to leave her to it if she’s not distressed there’s probably more in there.

She needs spaying though.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 30/07/2023 17:12

How old is she? I assume very young if she's not spayed?

LulooLemon · 30/07/2023 17:29

Wow, what a surprise! Good luck OP.

(Any chance of a picture of the kitten(s)?)

I have house cats. A neighbours cat has gotten into my house before. If they weren't spayed maybe I would be writing the OP. It happens.

mondaytosunday · 30/07/2023 17:43

One cat I had only had two. If she's content and feeding and taking care of the kitten then no need to do anything, though there may well be another - of f nothing after 12 hours then it's a solo kitty. But hey you know the rules - need to post a pic!

Mumsnut · 30/07/2023 18:13

.

SoCentralRain · 30/07/2023 18:16

How's it going @ludicrouslycapaciousbags?

StillWantingADog · 30/07/2023 18:20

Here for pictures

Yahyahs22 · 30/07/2023 18:22

It happens. I've had three cats escape out of doors/windows before - it only takes a second and they're off, especially if they're not neutered.

We've also had cats climb in through our windows before and steal our cats food Grin

Soubriquet · 30/07/2023 18:34

We used to have a cat across the road come to visit us. We went out one day and came back to find him coming downstairs obviously enjoying a good nap upstairs. Cheeky begger. The only cat my cat has ever gotten on with.

Next doors cats tried to come in once. Once. My dogs soon shooed them off which is good cos they are bullies.

Anyway, when your kitten has weaned, please do get your cat spayed. Being a house cat doesn’t mean she will never get pregnant. As she has proven. A cat in heat will be very determined to meet a male.

Undecicive · 30/07/2023 19:03

Singletons do happen but can be quite big. Make sure she can't get out, stays in one room, ideally a darkened corner/box. keep water and quality wet food nearby. Put the litterbox slightly further away, my cats don't use the box if it's too near the nest. Complications in cats are very rare and any trips to the vet would probably just stress her out too much. As the weather is fairly cold, make sure they have a nice, warm blanket to cuddle into.

ludicrouslycapaciousbags · 30/07/2023 20:35

Thank thank thank you for all the lovely messages.

We now have 3! Mum is doing a fabulous job they all seem to be feeding.

Vet said the same as above poster that if there is no complications then no need for them to intervene.

So the mystery of how this happened... counted back the weeks and I was abroad and daughter was looking after her, rather upset daughter confess to the cat getting out for 48 hrs... didn't want to tell me when I was away then apparently forgot 🤷🏼‍♀️

Pictures to follow...

Oooh 3? How cute. What will you do with them all do you think? Keep one for you and cat mum and give 2 to your DD as punishment for letting her out? 😜😆
