We found a kitten. Tips

Help! My daughter and husband have brought this sweet baby home having found it in a roadside. It’s a bit bitey and scared so I haven’t checked sex yet.

I’m off to the vet in a bit to check for any chip and to see what condition it’s in.

It has a good voice so I’m hoping it’s ok, although one eye is a little droopy.

It’s had a drink and is peeking up a bit now it’s out of the sun.

Anything else I should be doing other than keeping it safe?

I’ve had cats before but rescued as adults, never a kitten!!

Squeee! I’m of no use other than to say thank you so much for looking after a small baby thing!
And all black! How amazing!
Do let us know what the vet says

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 21/06/2023 16:22

If it doesn't have a chip.

  • Buy a litter tray and litter
  • Buy cat bowls and food
  • go back to where you found him and look for others
  • enjoy your new cat

We have a local lost & found pets group on FB. I would search out the one for your area and post in there. Someone may be looking for it.

FoundAKittenOops · 21/06/2023 16:38

Thanks everyone. We’re really quite rural so will message the 5 or 6 neighbouring houses / farms but I’m guessing abandoned farm cat.

I’ll still check for a chip in case it has escaped another way so we cover all bases!

Apparently my daughter has already thoroughly checked for others, though I may do another pass.

Do I need special litter for babies or is my usual clumping ok??

😩😬Found a kitten...

Somewere, theres a mother cat very upset. It didnt just materialise.

Ive been on the other side of this before when people have clearly "found" kittens around my farm and "rescued" them leaving a very upset mother cat.

Please carry out due dilligence.

CatChant · 21/06/2023 16:40

Oh what a pretty scrap!

Do check there are no others where you found him or her. Keep us posted on what the vet says.

No definitely not clumping litter for kittens. They like to eat it.

@Thatladdo we have a family farm so know the drill. DH says no sign of others or mum and he was flat and covered in flies hence picking him up.

Just waiting on vet advice now.

This happened to us. A black kitten suddenly appeared in our utility room. She had slipped in the door when one of us came in.

When we discovered her, we fed her and she wolfed down two trays of cat food.

She was full of worms and fleas. No chip. No other kittens no mum cat. She became ours. Sadly she got knocked down four years later.

I wonder if it's a black cat thing, being dumped.

I've had three black cats now and they were all super affectionate.

Enjoy your new cat. Lucky cat. Lucky you!

Yes this ^ You need to keep going back to where they found it. The mother could’ve been out hunting, she’s bound to be there somewhere. I’d get the kitten checked out by the vet and then maybe put him back where he was found and lurk around for a while in case mum does come back.

FoundAKittenOops · 21/06/2023 16:57

Also @Thatladdo i know the farmer two will check with her!

awwwwwwww

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 21/06/2023 17:31

That is one pissed off looking kitten! Well it’s a free pet.

FoundAKittenOops · 21/06/2023 17:40

He has an injury to his eye which is possibly infected so has medicated cream for that.

His bum was also riddled with maggots so is on an aggressive (by baby standards) worming and maggot killing treatment. Vet says it’s lucky we found him!

No chip was found. So he stays for his meds and I’ll check in with the neighbours!

I know you probably don’t want another kitten but have you thought about adopting another kitten so it has someone to play with?

Very cute.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 21/06/2023 18:08

Given your update OP it sounds as if you have saved a little fluffy life.
Good job 😁.

FoundAKittenOops · 21/06/2023 19:02

@GonnaGetGoingReturns i need to absorb having one! We’re on holiday in 5 weeks so might look for a pal after that. No neighbours have claimed him so far!

Aw what a sweetie! Thank god you found him..

I live rurally and found a kitten a few years ago by the side of the road, took him into the vet and they rang 2 days later to say another had been found further up the road, so probably dumped.

Thankfully the vets secretary kept them both in my case, but do keep your eyes peeled!

loveourplanet · 21/06/2023 19:16

Well done OP! without you, that lovely fluffy kitten would have had a very different outcome. Good on you!

RoseDog · 21/06/2023 19:19

What are you going to call him?

FoundAKittenOops · 21/06/2023 19:22

We have a dog called Pratchett so think this wee on will be Terry 🤣

chemistnightmare · 21/06/2023 19:23

Florissante · 21/06/2023 20:30

Well done, OP! You haven't changed the world but you've changed that kitten's world.

LostCats · 22/06/2023 10:45

Any news on baby?
