I’m finally going to get a cat!

My partner and I want a dog and a cat, me more so cat, and him more dog. I’ve finally made him realise a cat is the sensible first choice with our lives right now. We’ve signed up with the local rescues, looking for a young adult cat and I am so fucking excited. I’ve owned cats before but from a young child, anything I should get I haven’t thought about? Can I see your cats just to get me more excited? I’m genuinely over the moon

Give it a few weeks and you'll wonder how you ever lived without a cat.

FelicityBeedle · 25/02/2021 14:33

He’s been under the sofa for more than 3 hours now poor lad. I’ve sprinkled some treats and cat nip down there, and rolled a ball under in case he gets bored

He's just waiting for you to get so worried about him that you'll sell your soul for him. Once he knows he has the right level of devotion he'll be out!

FelicityBeedle · 25/02/2021 14:49

He must have heard me on the phone to the vets booking his microchip appointment and is sulking!

At least you don't have to get his bits chopped off! Grin

FelicityBeedle · 25/02/2021 15:33

He did the funniest thing at the rescue, apparently he’s only done it since he was neutered. He was fine with you being in his space to fuss over him, give treats etc. But as soon as the lady went in with dustbin and brush he was pushing her away with head and paw, no biting scratching or hissing. Really good natured but absolutely insistent. she said she’d never seen anything like it before

Yay! I'm sure he'll soon settle in. The tom cat smell will gradually go too.

HeadNorth · 25/02/2021 15:45

Cats are the best and the secret to a long marriage. My DH got me a cat as our wedding present when we first married. It has now been 27 years and we are onto our second cat, I can forgive a lot from a man who got me a cat (especially as he is allergic, bless him).

Joolsin · 25/02/2021 15:50

Here is my moggy, hard at work sleeping on my lap. I should be hoovering, but cat on knees trumps everything!!

I’m finally going to get a cat!
TheLongRider · 25/02/2021 16:19

He's lovely and looks a bit like one of my previous cats called Percy.

Don't worry if he hides for a few days. He might not eat much for the first 24 hours ( or not in front of you). He will probably not use the litter tray for about 24 hours either. Give him some time.

The best thing you can do is sit quietly in the room he's hiding in and talk to him so that he gets used to the sound of your voice. You could sit and Mumsnet or read.

He will wash himself and the smell will go, you don't need to clean him. Again time is your friend.

iklboo · 25/02/2021 16:30

He's gorgeous. Looks like a Bernard to me.

MrsAteacher · 25/02/2021 17:04

Recently adopted a ten month old rescue recently. Cant believe she was a stray. Taken to all in house within a day.

bebarkered · 25/02/2021 17:29

Oh OP, I'm absolutely thrilled for you and for your new baby! He's gorgeous. Happy days ahead 😼😼😼

bebarkered · 25/02/2021 17:30

Timmy? Billy?

FelicityBeedle · 25/02/2021 17:43

Sorry you’re likely to be bombarded with photos for a few days. We’re not considering Sebastian, or NAthaniel

He is ridiculously gorgeous. Apparently they find names ending in a E sound easiest to learn. No idea who asked the cats though.

Georgie or Teddy are nice names.

EachandEveryone · 25/02/2021 18:01

Is that him at the rescue or now out from under the sofa?

FelicityBeedle · 25/02/2021 18:22

That’s him now! Four hours under the sofa and now he’s as friendly as can be.

My DH didn't want another cat, so we got two kittens and now have 3 cats. He loves them every bit as much as I do and is a right soft touch for the old, disabled one.

Get cat insurance. My £10 farm kitten got hit by a car at 9 months old and had cost me nearly £1000 in vets bills before her first birthday.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/02/2021 18:31

That’s the right thing to do when they don’t want another cat. It’s like saying your not going to have pudding after a big meal, it’s Optimistic at best.

coastergirl · 25/02/2021 19:33

He is so gorgeous! He looks really happy too. Congratulations to you all.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/02/2021 19:39

Aww I feel all warm and fuzzy! He looks absolutely adorable.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 25/02/2021 19:53

Well that didn't take him long Grin.

I agree with chosing a name ending with 'ee'. If you don't you'll append 'ee' onto his name anyway.

He needs a good solid name - how about Bob?

Joolsin · 25/02/2021 19:57

I think he looks like a Francis (no idea why!) and you can call him Fran or Frank or Frankie for short.
