Good luck with the vet appointment. I think you need some professional advice. We've had older cats that have howled for ages, almost like a form of catty dementia. They seemed perfectly happy but very shouty. We never found a cure for it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/02/2021 08:03

You can give anxious cats amitriptyline for generalised anxiety. Asbo was offered it for his stress cystitis.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 11/02/2021 08:07

How's his hearing? Neighbour's meezer was shouty in his old age and they thought he was unwell - but he was actually somewhat deaf.

QueenPaw · 11/02/2021 08:37

Hears a tin opening 3 rooms away Smile

YetAnotherSpartacus · 11/02/2021 08:41

Oh well. At least his ears work.

Do you think he is actually unhappy though?

QueenPaw · 11/02/2021 08:47

I don't know Sad
His day is basically yowl for food, eat food. Go in and out the window and shout each time, sometimes vanish for 30 mins. Sleep 11-3 if I'm lucky. Yowl from 3-6 in between going in and out. Sit outside the bathroom and shout while I shower after work. Quiet 7-10 as he's sat on me. Sleep. Start shouting from 3am - 6am

QueenPaw · 11/02/2021 08:48

This is the noise

YetAnotherSpartacus · 11/02/2021 08:52

Quiet 7-10 as he's sat on me

I think this is the key - he wants you.

QueenPaw · 11/02/2021 08:55

He does but then it changes late on as he wants to go out, even being sat on me doesn't work
If I leave the doors open at night so he can come and find me, he just comes in my room and shouts Confused
Oh Ollie

Papergirl1968 · 11/02/2021 11:06

My money would be on him just being a very chatty and needy lad, and getting increasingly so as he gets older, like a grumpy old man, rather than it being a physical thing or dementia. He’s got used to you working from home, but he doesn't understand why he doesn’t have your undivided attention. He doesn’t sound unhappy, just very demanding.
Matt has taken to howling at the top of his voice when I go to bed, and I think it’s because he wants to go back to his favourite spot on the radiator in the living room, but he can’t because the dog sleeps in there and the heating is off at night in any case.

TheSilveryPussycat · 11/02/2021 11:20

So now I know about Handsome Nature. Even though I am not really a cat, I sat and watched pigeons feeding and a squirrel have a feast last night Blush

Back in the Olden Days our DCat used to love watching the snooker.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 11/02/2021 11:42

I love it SilveryPussycat! Mug of hot chocolate, Mumsnet and Handsome Nature on the TV makes for a relaxing afternoon 😁

Pic of Leroy enjoying a recent episode!

Ollie has obviously listened to me as he's been sunbathing outside silently Grin
Our vet has a behaviourist so will see what they say tomorrow. He will also be in for a steroid jab in 3 weeks so can have another check then
I just don't want him to be in pain or miserable and I worry when he's howling all night that he is. But if he won't settle on the bed with me there's not much I can do. Thankfully my neighbour is very hard of hearing....

QueenPaw · 11/02/2021 18:39

Ollie has bookmarked this thread. He's been tucked up in bed all day, silent Hmm

Papergirl1968 · 11/02/2021 18:54

Your “I’m at the end of my tether” voice clearly works! Grin

QueenPaw · 11/02/2021 19:01

Now I'm worrying he's ill because he's quiet HmmConfusedGrin
He's been outside and sunbathed a bit and then just napped all day

Noise is a good barometer for illness in the more vocal cat isn’t it?.

He’ll wake you at 2am.

QueenPaw · 11/02/2021 19:17

He's just emerged to shout at me for having the audacity to eat rice pudding and not share

nettie434 · 11/02/2021 20:40

Reassuring that Ollie has realised he has missed out on the rice pudding and is complaining! I agree with Papergirl1968 that humans working from home and not able to provide 24/7 service must be weird. I hope the behaviourist has some suggestions.

Defiantly41 · 11/02/2021 21:00

We have a bit of wailing at night from DCat1, she seems to do it in her sleep and wakes herself (and us) up at times. She's about 15, had this with our old cat too when he was in his late teens. Meantime, DCat2 has come in with a scratched eyeball and has to have drops 5 times a day. It's hard to catch her even once so that's going to be fun.

Papergirl1968 · 12/02/2021 11:09

Matt was quiet when went to bed but woke me up howling in the middle of the night - I channelled my inner Queen and did my best “end of my tether” voice! Smile

Toddlerteaplease · 12/02/2021 16:06

The shouting on that video is exactly what Cheddar does when she wants attention. He seems like he's got something important to tell you.

QueenPaw · 12/02/2021 17:09

@Toddlerteaplease I just wish it wasn't for 16hrs a day... Grin

Spoke to the vet who agrees try the post op food for 2 weeks, and suggested nutracalm? He also agreed to not try the calm stuff at the minute as don't want to put him off food when he needs weight. Shouting he said probably neurotic weirdo learned behaviour Hmm

Supersimkin2 · 12/02/2021 20:01

Pleased Ollie is back to his usual self.

Leroy ought to guest on Gogglebox.

QueenPaw · 13/02/2021 12:20

Any grub going? Lunch time

He's scoffing down ollies wet food. Ollie "but that is ma food mama. Why he not eat the dry peasant food?"
