Papergirl1968 · 28/10/2020 09:06

There is a tabby cat day in the spring, apparently, but Socks was very disappointed to discover there is no black and white cat day.
I’m starting a new job on Friday, after nearly six and a half years of not working. We had Matt just after I took voluntary redundancy so he’s never known me go to work.
It’s part time and Christmas temp only (retail) but my first shift is seven hours! 😿

Papergirl1968 · 28/10/2020 09:09

There’s also a ginger cat appreciation day. Socks is sulking even more now!

Supersimkin2 · 28/10/2020 09:34

We must have a Socks Day on the thread. Good luck @Papergirl1968, well done you. Those first shifts will be knackering but I do the charity shop at Xmas and it is, in South London vocab, a right larf. Time flies by.

Matt will kip waiting for you to come back and appear at his bowl 0.05 seconds after key in door.

Papergirl1968 · 28/10/2020 09:59

Thanks, Lana. I hope I cope with being on my feet for so many hours. I just had some fugly but hopefully comfy Padders shoes delivered...
I think the cats will be fine although I’ll try to keep Socks in as she’s a bugger to get back in sometimes. She never goes far but darts off again as soon as I try to close the door behind her.
Slightly more worried about the dog and whether to trust dd, 19, whose dog it actually is, to pop home. I always separate the dog from the cats when I go out as feline-canine relations are still difficult. Last night they snoozed a foot away from each other with me in between them but Matt only has to catch the dog’s eye and he growls at her! And three times the other day the dog chased the cats barking at them. Although I think that was because they went too near her food so I now pick it up if it’s not eaten.

I've checked out the CPL site for Socks. National Black Cat Day was started by them in 2011 to encourage the adoption of black and black&white cats as they spent longer waiting for homes.

👍🏻

nettie434 · 28/10/2020 10:30

Good luck with the new job Papergirl1968. Those shoes sound as if they are definitely need.

Belated Happy Black Cat Day to all black and nearly black cats, including Ollie, Leroy, Socks and Bertie. I loved your photos on the other thread Allergic (and all the other photos). I hadn't realised Boycat and Girlcat were black.

Is there a ginger cat day for the Capn, Nemo, Colin etc?

nettie434 · 28/10/2020 10:32

Just read that there is a ginger cat day - sorry Papergirl, I missed that Blush Most unfair that there is no b&w cat day.

Papergirl1968 · 28/10/2020 10:37

Ginger cat day was 1st Sept.
I’ve told Socks she can share black cat day and she’s happy now. Smile
How long did Paws stay in the middle of the night, Queen? It’s lucky you were still up!

swampytiggaa · 28/10/2020 10:42

Good luck with the new job @Papergirl1968 💕 fingers crossed it leads to something more permanent if that’s what you want 💕

I’ve just got in from work. Started at 5. Gomez started creating at 3:10am 😭😭 not impressed.

QueenPaws · 28/10/2020 10:44

About 20 mins! He found the heated airer

Papergirl1968 · 28/10/2020 10:52

Thanks, Swampy. Gomez was just trying to make sure you didn’t oversleep. Grin
queen, I long for the day that Paws stays all night.

swampytiggaa · 28/10/2020 10:55

What sort of retail are you doing? I’m in a supermarket 🙂

Papergirl1968 · 28/10/2020 11:00

HomeSense. I’ve never worked in retail before.
Even if it is just till Christmas I hope it will help me get something else in the new year.
I’ve been so broke lately!

YesItsMeIDontCare · 28/10/2020 11:35

I’ve told Socks she can share black cat day and she’s happy now.

Not sharing - created specifically with B&Ws needs carrying equal weight to Blacks.

It's different in my head iyswim Blush

coastergirl · 28/10/2020 11:53

Ah Walter will be happy too then as he's also black and white.

TheLongRider · 28/10/2020 11:56

Best of luck with the new job Papergirl. The time will fly by.

swampytiggaa · 28/10/2020 12:06

If you can survive Christmas in retail you can survive anything 😂😂 good luck 💕

Defiantly41 · 28/10/2020 12:55

Good luck @Papergirl1968 . @swampytiggaa is right, if you can survive Christmas in retail you can survive anything. It's exhausting and hard on the feet but you sleep better and this year (with some objectionable exceptions), retail workers seem to be more appreciated.

I work in retail and many of our team right up to the directors started as seasonal temps, so it's good to build skills and get connections.

Um SORT OF black.

Boycat is actually smoke black, with a lovely silvery grey undercoat so shedding shows up on both dark and light fabrics.

Girlcat is also smoke, but when you catch her in just the right light you can see she's actually charcoal tabby! The charcoal is much darker than usual, but there are definitely distinct stripes in her head and legs, and her tail is faintly ringed.

Allergictoironing · 28/10/2020 13:10

In fact, here's the pic from the other thread, which shows her stripes quite well if you open it a bit larger Smile

YesItsMeIDontCare · 28/10/2020 13:43

Look closely enough at any panther and you'll see the markings of their actual species (breed for domestic cats). Which in Leroy's case appears to be Blotchy Moggy.

nettie434 · 28/10/2020 14:03

Thanks Allergic and YesitsmeIdon'tcare. That's interesting about the markings. I saw a TV programme a few weeks ago which said that domestic cats were originally tabbies in the wild for better camouflage.

Papergirl1968 · 28/10/2020 14:23

Thank you everyone.
A pack of two kitchen rolls have just fallen off the top of the fridge on to poor Socks who has retreated further into the garage in search of cover where she’s safer from unexpected missiles Grin.
I amuse myself by saying in a David Attenborough voice, “And here we have the lesser spotted Socks, a very rare sight in day time.”
I also call her Spinster of this Parish because she reminds me of a quiet, straight laced and slightly disapproving elderly lady.
