Well, I sat down with foot in air & the bloke whipped out a machete (scalpel, I am exaggerating a little). I said hopefully 'is there any local anesthetic' as the blade glinted ever closer to the massive red infected toe.
He said 'you should have gone to our other centre for that'. Then he saw my face and said 'I'll use a smaller scalpel'. And produced a blade about the size of a carving knife (slight exagg again). And a whole armoury of curved blades and gougers.
I kept conscious by asking him about the highs and lows of podiatry
. He said he liked his job, but he didn't like inflicting pain.
