Thank you all for the kind words and advice.
So far he's been a really good boy. Destroyed my slipper but small price to pay for it not being my face/arms.

Trixibella · 28/08/2023 17:41

These lovely patches will get more and more frequent - don’t be disheartened if he’s bitey again tomorrow or there’s an accident inside. Sometimes it really does feel one step forwards, two steps back with puppies but whippets are lovely, he sounds sweet and he’s so so young. He didn’t exist 10 weeks ago, you’re the only anchor he has at the moment.

Just gird your loins for biting for weeks yet - it’s totally normal, it’s like when babies grab your hair or whack you on the nose with something they’re waving around.

Food; give him what he likes. You can sort any dietary changes later when you’ve got the headspace if you want to. Puppies self regulate their food intake very well usually (perhaps not
labs).

Hello! Please may I join?

We picked up our 8 week old poodle puppy yesterday. I have questions!

  1. Crate training. It's lovely, it has treats, it's where we feed her. Does she like it? Does she fuck. She's been in a bit today... how do I encourage this? I'm really reluctant to shut her in so soon :-(
  1. Sleep. We have 2 small kids. 18-20 hours a day is a tall order. She's been pretty good today but she seems to be a really light sleeper!

Would be very grateful for advice!

Cocopuff · 28/08/2023 21:01

@DueyCheatemAndHow congrats on your new puppy! Crates take a while for them to get used to. We had Cocos crate in a pen. She would nap in the pen but not the crate during the day - but would (v reluctantly) go in the crate at night times. Den wizard visits (where treats mysteriously appear in the crate) encouraged her to venture in there during the day willingly. Also kongs or lickimats in the crate are good. Pen also helps for puppy to have quiet space to rest in while little kids are charging around

DueyCheatemAndHow · 28/08/2023 21:03

Thanks so much that's reassuring!

We have a Coco too! I've also read Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy. Maybe you're me ahead of time!

Cocopuff · 28/08/2023 21:04

Glad today has been a better day @Losingmymind85

You will have good days and bad days but it will all be so worth it in the long run. Find long lasting chews that will satisfy their need to chew - goats ears, bull puddles, whatever it takes - they will soon realise those are so much better to chew on than you

Steppingintome · 28/08/2023 21:41

steppup has been lovely today. DH finally got round to cutting our huge lawn so she’s been out most of the day and we can see her! She’s only destroyed 2 plants and dug a big hole by the back door lol. she slept again last night and did an extra hour until 7am. Yay! She’s only tried to bite my feet 1000 times today instead of the normal 5000 so I think it’s progress ;). I’m fully aware this may not last and we may go backwards again haha. I’m making the most of it.

Im back at work tomorrow so not here to keep letting her out so I’ve told DH if he doesn’t want to be clearing piss up all day he needs to remember to keep letting her into the garden lol

Riverlee · 28/08/2023 21:58

Welcome @DueyCheatemAndHow.

If you only got your puppy yesterday, she’s probably still getting used to her new environment. Give her time to settle in.

Please May we have a picture?

Not sure how many have teen puppies here or if it's more for new additions?

My teen boy (8 months) is very unpredictable when it comes to how he is with people, he will sometimes happily just walk past like they don't exist at all, but other times he will leap to go after them, barking and growling... he's only little, but definitely still scares people when he is like that. It's just odd how unpredictable it is...

DueyCheatemAndHow · 28/08/2023 22:10

@Riverlee oh alright then! All the nicer ones are bigger than 6mb!

We are approaching 8 months and he is starting to randomly spook at things that never bothered him before and not listening when given a command. He is also extremely vocal when he is over tired ( dropping naps left right and centre) longer walks, training sessions and sniffy games are helping but not totally solving it. Trainer is on holiday this week will be asking their advice when they get back!!

Orangebadger · 29/08/2023 19:10

@Gizlotsmum Orangepup was spooked in the park about a month ago, but then so was I ( but after she was spooked!) we were walking along the river side in the park and she just stopped suddenly, became hyper alert and started barking, thankfully not lunging, just standing barking. Initially I had no idea why, when I looked around a man with all his fishing tackle had just appeared from the bushes in front of us! So not surprised she got a shock. But ever since then she will randomly stop and bark at people. Usually where there are bushes but they're not necessarily coming out of bushes. The other day a lady was just reading her book by some bushes. Luckily orange pup is only barking, but still. It's took us aback as she's normally that very friendly dog that loves you if you breathe! I just put the lead back on and give her treats while walking by. She hasn't done it for a week now so I am really hoping it's passed.

Florapup went through a phase of barking at people, I started getting her attention on me with a nice ‘sit’ at treats before the person was close enough to bark. If the ‘offending’ person was remotely doggie, I’d see them smiling, or they’d say ‘ahhh’ with a smile. I’d tell them she was a puppy in training and ask if they would give her a treat. They often looked surprised, but they all agreed. 7/10 if this and she no longer barked at people, though sometimes she wanted to check them for treats 😂🤣 This was maybe 7 weeks ago and the barking has never come back.

Gizlotsmum · 29/08/2023 19:36

Ooh I think I need to be more on it in spotting people. He doesn’t sit when anything interesting is near tho! Most of his barking is at home when we are trying to relax today we spent a fifth of our walk with him looking over his shoulder. No idea at what…

AnnieSnap · 29/08/2023 22:53

@Gizlotsmum can you find a treat that is high value enough to keep his attention when out, maybe cheese or liver?

Sunflowers765 · 30/08/2023 09:39

Sunpup is now officially Sundog because he's a year old!
To all those with pups that won't sleep, bite all the time and wee and poo where they're not supposed to.... hang in there ... they're just baby dogs!!
It will get better, and then you just have to deal with adolescence!

@Sunflowers765 Gorgeous photo's, they really do grow up quickly. What a handsome young dog he is.

EinyLinky · 30/08/2023 12:49

What age did your dogs stop with accidents? He's 8 months and does go outside most of the time as I offer him every couple of hours and when he's being particularly keen near the door. However, he does sometimes go near the door with little care to wait a bit... is it likely to be just because he's young at 8 months?

AnnieSnap · 30/08/2023 12:59

Sun dog is so gorgeous 🙂

NoWordForFluffy · 30/08/2023 14:47

@EinyLinky, FluffyPup was 5 months when we got him and house trained in a week. I'd say 8 months is a bit old maybe?

This is my worry! Seems everyone's pup is so much younger for being reliably house trained. I've been told it's the Dachshund in him... but I don't know. It's so frustrating because you think of you do everything "by the book" it will all go fine and toilet training was the highest priority for me! Really gutted

Gizlotsmum · 30/08/2023 18:46

@AnnieSnap i’m willing to try anything!

Gizlotsmum · 30/08/2023 18:48

@EinyLinky we still have occasional accidents ( normally if we are not paying enough attention) we are coming up to 8 months.

BigBundleOfFluff · 30/08/2023 19:03

@Sunflowers765 awwww Sundog is great. That action picture is just cracker!
