The trailer has just been released and I can’t wait!

It’s probably my favourite programme atm so it’s a shame it’s ending but I’d rather that than it getting repetitive and dragged out.

Logan's cable knit jumper and fluffy cuddly cardigan are definitely deliberate style choices.

I may be doing them too much credit but I can’t help but think they are all deliberate decisions. Shiv wants to rule the corporate world but can’t quite hit the stylistic mark. Roman is in expensive suits but is so crippled with his emotions he can’t pull them off. Even Logan’s cable knit jumper in the credits makes me laugh because it gives “cuddly grandpa” vibes and he couldn’t be less so. Tom always looks sharp though!

I agree. Although I think I'm a dissenting voice on Shiv as I think she usually looks quite good!

Tom as a relative outsider has to try hard and has probably slung money at getting the best tailor/stylists/grooming possible.

IClaudine · 12/04/2023 09:38

I think the clothing decisions are very carefully thought out. If you look at Shiv in the first season, she dressed very differently.

Logan (RIP🤣)did love a cable knit.

MarkWithaC · 12/04/2023 09:39

Oh, and I've no doubt at all that they're all deliberate decisions by the show's stylists.

MarkWithaC · 12/04/2023 10:00

Ooh, thank you!

FiftyNotNifty · 12/04/2023 10:05

Thank you, that's such an interesting article! I'd forgotten about Tom's puffy vest being full of his hopes and dreams 😂

slamfightbrightlight · 12/04/2023 10:08

Also, as an aside, there are some Me Too-ish stories circulating about Nicholas Braun. If I was a cynic I’d say someone has done a very good job of sitting on them until filming was complete. If there’s any truth to them, then there have been some very close to the bone lines aimed at his character throughout the show.

blahblahblahandblahsomemore · 12/04/2023 10:26

I’ve just restarted the first series and Shiv looks really different, long hair and wearing a pink silk shirt and trouser combo and think a cardigan that looks casual but obvs cost a fortune. She definitely looks much more put together. There must be an deliberate shift in what she’s wearing and even how she carries herself. She looks much younger in series 1 even though it wasn’t that long ago.

tribpot · 12/04/2023 10:57

She was in politics in season 1, so I guess image was much more important to her.

The Ringer interview is great, thanks @slamfightbrightlight - why am I not surprised that Jeremy Strong is involved in Kendall's wardrobe down to choosing the underwear!

Logan did like a comfy cable knit, shame he was the world's most terrifying grandpa (I guess maybe except Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin). He got one of Kendall's kids to taste his food for him in case Kendall was trying to poison him.

Lottapianos · 12/04/2023 11:37

'He got one of Kendall's kids to taste his food for him in case Kendall was trying to poison him.'

Oh my gosh, I had forgotten that! 😱 He was such a fearsome character, really frightening at times

XelaM · 12/04/2023 11:38

Am I the only one who is very disappointed with the series?

Seems just swearing for the sake of it with no real drama except a rehash of the same old. Shiv looks a mess. Was she pregnant during filming? None of the characters (except the old man) are likeable and if he's really dead then it's all very disappointing.

JaneFondue · 12/04/2023 11:45

The point is that they are deeply unlikeable! It's like dark bitter coffee in the morning, after lying awake at 3 am thinking about all the regrets you have and can never change now. It's gnawing existentialist despair. It's realising your parents never loved you. It's Philip Larkin, as pp said. 😀

'if he's really dead'? Have you actually watched the pertinent episode?
And I second what JaneFondue says. But I'd also add that part of its allure and its genius is that yes, they all behave abominably most of the time, but you can see why, and even have some sympathy for at least understanding of them.
If you're watching it for simple likeability then you are definitely on a hiding to nothing, but IMO it is much more rewarding than would be a drama where everyone is just nice.

And the 'same old' can equally be described as the whole point of the whole thing. I'd think that being part of a dynasty like that IS an endless circling of the idea of succession, and changing your approach/manoeuvres as the wind changes, and being constantly on edge and insecure. Which takes it toll on a person's character and humanity, and again makes for great drama.

tribpot · 12/04/2023 11:53

The old man was decidedly not likeable! He was an utter monster. Everyone in the show is horrific. The point is that money corrupts and these people are obscenely wealthy.

slamfightbrightlight · 12/04/2023 12:02

Likeable 😂 the man was a monster.

In Season 1 he's even worse

This is such a great description. I know some people who watch it do struggle with them all being so despicable but for me that’s the joy of it. And still rooting for (some of) them despite their massive flaws.

It also shows just how completely removed the mega-wealthy are from everyone else, and yet how much they control the narrative - I know they haven’t made as much of that in recent series but the manipulation of politics and public thought definitely came through in earlier episodes. As a kind of “how the hell did we get here” it’s a really sobering watch.

And the acting is just so phenomenal. No gesture or word is wasted. Roman’s fumbled attempts at comforting his siblings, and in seeking comfort from
Gerri, made me physically ache 😆 I watch an embarrassing amount of television but I rarely rewatch drama series, whereas this I can watch over and over again.

Oh no! That would be so disappointing. I love his performance as Greg.

XelaM · 12/04/2023 12:56

I do get that they're all terrible people, but I could really get into it in Seasons 1 and 2. Season 3 was much weaker but still good. But this season is just a drag. Same old same old and none of the characters have any kind of development

TanyaandGreg · 12/04/2023 13:47

I know what you mean. I would have liked this series to have stated with the Madsen deal done and the kids dealing with the fallout, rather than it still being in negotiation. The scenes are still better than pretty much all other shows but I find when it’s all negotiation and back and forth, it’s a bit wearying. Also maybe if Tom and Shiv’s divorce was already underway, rather than just starting. Though maybe both things wouldn’t work now with Logan’s death - for example if the Madsen deal had gone through, would any of the 3 be able to take over? I’ve confused myself with the detail. You can tell I’m not in business!

tribpot · 12/04/2023 13:57

Yep if the company had been sold to Matsson there would be nothing for the kids to 'succeed' to, they would be (even more) staggeringly wealthy and the only company Logan would still have been running would be ATN.

JaneFondue · 12/04/2023 15:26

Sorry @XelaM for Succession-splaining to you! I didn't realise you had seen the earlier seasons and preferred them; I thought you hadn't seen any.

Personally I think the S 3 season finale with the wedding in Italy was the best of the lot.

TanyaandGreg · 12/04/2023 16:50

Thanks tribpot.

It’s so revealing those moments where all your money and power can’t change anything. They want to get the best heart doctor and a better medical team etc etc. Do you remember in a previous series where Kendall wants to get the heli to the board meeting and the airspace is shut. Kendall is offering him everything until the pilot finally says if I take off they will shoot us down and he finally gives in!

Totally agree re the wedding. The scenes with the three kids were incredible
