I thought it would be high time to get the TARDIS party going, now we're on a countdown. Has anyone else seen the clip from the first episode yet? Looking like good fun. I might even be persuaded to squee.

Loved it! Big DT fan - but then was big CE fan before him! Just an (unexpectedly) big Doctor Who nerd fan I guess

Agree with others that he was refreshing after the angst of DT's later episodes - pleased I didn't want to sob at the end for once!

Almost felt a small crush developing until the change of clothes - lose the boy tie pleeeease!

DS1 (12) who seemed to have 'grown out of' Dr who last series or two thought it was excellent and even stopped msn-ing his gf for nearly the whole episode

frecklyspeckly · 03/04/2010 22:42

It was gripping; brilliant episode and dare I say a bit of light relief from the gloomy End of Time Christmas Episode. DS had to be put to bed and dosed with calpol on New Years Day when DT regenerated, he was distraught, but lo! all forgotten tonight! think Amy helped, he appears to be discovering the lure of pretty girls. (He is 7).

sweetnitanitro · 03/04/2010 22:45

Just watched it with DH, we both loved it. I don't normally cope well with change but I think MS is brilliant. Amy is fab too, I can't wait to see the next episode. I might even be brave enough to watch the episode with those angels in it, they were really scary!

edam · 03/04/2010 22:50

Am reserving judgment on Matt Smith but will admit this episode was a lot better than I'd expected. Moffat is fine, am glad he took over, but still not convinced by Matt. Hate the new theme tune, too.

Fanboy dh (we have a picture of him aged seven in a blue anorak with Tom Baker) was pleased though and thinks Matt will do just fine.

Jbck · 03/04/2010 22:50

DD1 and I recorded it and watched when we could concentrate. Loved it, thought he was really good. Was getting a bit fed up of seeing him and the trailer so was preparing to be a bit disappointed.
Laughed a lot which I think won me over a bit after all DT's angst lately.
Episode flew by and he'd even begun to look less odd by about half way through.
Looking forward to the rest of the series.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 03/04/2010 22:51

Loved it! I am so fickle. I sulked bigtime when Tenth regenerated, and I'm afraid to say that Matt Smith had me within about five minutes. He is great, far beyond my expectations. A bit David Tennantish so far, but I'm sure he'll find his voice soon enough.

Not sure about the kissogram, but it made DH happy, anyway.

luciemule · 03/04/2010 22:53

Oh dear - my first time atching DW since I was little and not very impressed. He seemed so dippy (I know they have all been like that) but I have to say I was expecting same calibre as Torchwood and it so wasn't. It seemed like a bit of a joke really and totally unbelievable acting. Oh well - I'm sure DS and DD will make me watch the others so perhaps it will warm up.

BigHairyLeggedSpider · 03/04/2010 23:02

Loved it. So did the DSs'es. He's going to be a great Doctor!

And yup... I have a slight crush on him! Mmmm

Pixel · 03/04/2010 23:03

Rustybear thanks for that, I didn't realise there were some old Doctor Whos on so I've now set the recorder.

Well what can I say, he still looks creepy but was better than I expected. Hated the beginning and he sort of grew on me a bit, and then found myself thinking quite fondly of him when we got to "I am a madman with a box".

Amy can't run though. Serves her right for having those ridiculous giraffe legs.

noddyholder · 03/04/2010 23:08

V good First Dr Who I have seen since the 70s and it is a definite improvement. He is great very individual looking and watchable The girl is lovely and a redhead which is a bonus

MotherOfBarabas · 03/04/2010 23:15

i thought he was very pt like, vg i thought. although am a bit squicked by the moff going at it like a mechanical digger.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 03/04/2010 23:25

I enjoyed it a lot - more than I thought I would, given that I think David Tennant was the best Doctor ever.

Was it just me, or did the head of the alien look a bit like the head of the monster in Alien? It reminded me of something.

I agree they should lose the bow tie - the rest of the outfit is ok, and I am a bit ho-hum about the new tardis, though I expect it will grow on me. I'm looking forward to finding out what the Silence is.

All in all, A- for Effort, B++ for Attainment. A good start, but must work hard to keep up this good standard, and improve upon it.

SearchingForMyInnerJoan · 03/04/2010 23:26

Loved it Loved it LOVED IT!

Have to say that I did say 'David Who?' when it finished.

Totally fabulous. Loved all the 'in jokes'
'DUCK' on the text (remember the Angels?)
and also loved the whole 'What do Tiggers like?' sequence.

I can't believe any of you (or those that did) are seriously worrying abut the kissogram thing . They made good use of the joke with the whole nurse/nun thing...
It was FUNNY

I should get a prize for that because as soon as the Doctor said "what's happening tomorrow?" I said "I bet she's getting married". Dd was quite impressed when I was proved right.

Idontknowhowtohelpher · 03/04/2010 23:47

When the doctor said about wiping the history on computers, both dh and ds (20+) sniggered. dd2 (age 8) asked them what was so funny - that served them right

BalsamicJam · 04/04/2010 00:02

Well it was a HUGE occasion in our house because it was the first time that we allowed our 6 year old Dr Who-mad son to watch an episode. He's cultivated his obsession with some programmes on CBBC, the comic, the toys, an occasional clip on I-Player and has been begging for about 2 years now to watch a whole episode and that "he promises not to be too scared".

So we despatched Dad and younger sister to another room and sat down and watched it together. I really enjoyed it. Found it funnier and sexier than I expected. My son was amused by the whole Dr being 5 minutes late equating with 12 years - was in awe of the new tardis. Didn't like the fact that I had to answer the question "what's a kissogram" to a 6 year old but was impressed by Matt Smith and his cartoon-esque face.

Guess I am going to have to watch it every week now which is a slightly less onerous prospect after tonight's very entertaining episode.

FiveOrangePips · 04/04/2010 00:23

My ds (nearly six) thinks he is Doctor Who, and dd * (who was not happy about the change - though her fave is not Tennant, but Ecclestone) - both seemed to really enjoy it.

I think they are both just glad it has started again!

confuddledDOTcom · 04/04/2010 02:55

I wasn't happy that I liked him so much! I was determined not too but he really works well.

One thing no one else seems to have picked up on - what was with the St John Ambulance logo on the door? I've been a member most of my life so picked up on that a mile away, it was the full logo with the animals and name, not just a Maltese cross which could be anything.

tatt · 04/04/2010 08:18

none of us thought much of it. New assistant may be ok but the new doctor definitely sad. Was also disappointed that the cybermen, daleks and angels are all to come back, makes it seem they have no new ideas.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/04/2010 08:20

Rusty How fantastic!!!!! Am so glad you posted about the classic Who. I am very made up have set the recorder to record loads today. Hooray!!!

RustyBear · 04/04/2010 08:28

confuddled - the St. John Ambulance logo was on the real police boxes, and on the original Tardis prop - it was left out when the original got so battered they had to make a new one for the Fourth Doctor's third season. You can see the different Tardis versions here

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 04/04/2010 08:46

It went down well here! I hated Donna (really sorry, just not a Catherine Tate fan) but thought the new assistant was gorgeous and really good - DH was mesmerised by her (kept going on about how lovely her hair was

Matt Smith was pretty good - very quirky, but overall v good and managed to take on the DT albatross well. I thought the little girl was fantastic (and the pg hormones surged when she was packing, sob, to go with him, sob and he obviously wasn't coming back then waaaaaaaaail!)

DH throughly approved of the kissogram!

it's starting to be pure FX, which I hope does not gloss over the storyline
