I thought it would be high time to get the TARDIS party going, now we're on a countdown. Has anyone else seen the clip from the first episode yet? Looking like good fun. I might even be persuaded to squee.

Very intruiged by next weeks. This weeks will go in the list of 'only watched as part of a series rewatch' rather than stand alone. V similar to rose & mickey but at least Rory was a bit hostile at first. MS reminded me of DT tonight.

sphil · 08/05/2010 22:03

I loved it - lots of funny lines and good pace. Agree about the Rose/Mickey similarities though.

I thought the Dr shouted at Amy because he was feeling bruised by Rory's comment about him making people a danger to themselves.

I think I'm enjoying this series so much (apart from dreadful daleks episode) because they all look as if they're having such a good time. No angst - quite refreshing. I did love DT's sad eyes but it made me smile tonight when the fish-woman jumped into the water - it would have been a cue for soulful staring into the distance with DT but all MS managed was to look slightly quizzical

Aitch · 08/05/2010 22:24

i really like the new Shouty Doctor, actually, i think it's entirely reasonable that after nine hundred or whatever years he would just find humans annoying when they jabber.

so do we think that the bit at the first episode where the sunburst happened ant they slowed the film down was the re-writey witey timey-wimey doc? beside the duck pond~?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/05/2010 22:30

more thoughts?
why could they sometimes tolerate sunlight and not other times?

why did the fish lady have to remove her clothes when before when she used her gadget they just disappeared and clearly weren't real?

how did the doctor suddenly get in to talk to fish lady when it had been so hard to get in before?

and why so few girls for so many boys?

and how would rain sink venice?

and where did the tidal wave from the earthquake go?

and why would the doctor get in his tardis at the end when all was silent?

BariatricObama · 08/05/2010 22:34

why did they have to sink the city, couldn't they just jump in the sea [unwilling to suspend disbelief that much]

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/05/2010 22:41

thst is vert true BO - all sinking venice would do is drown a lot of people.

I love dr who, have done since Tom Baker, but this episode was just nonsense.

re the clothes. she had to go in wearing the white goonie so that her boys would think she was a bride.

Lovecat · 08/05/2010 23:21

They'd have wanted to sink the City so they had something to eat, no? (Not sure of this one myself, tbh!)

I was quite moved by the end of it - perhaps it was me, but was the mother trying to help her children live a bit longer by feeding herself to them?

And MS deffo came back when Amy was a child - I kept waiting for that to be explained but it's obviously something to do with the whole storyline of the series now that things are going a bit odd.

Glad Rory's on board, I like it when the Dr has a male 'assistant'...

CoinOperatedGirl · 09/05/2010 01:23

That was truly boring. Goddamit I was hoping to become a Dr Who Geek in my spare time, really not working out. I was a bit meh about it tbh when it first started, Dp was enthusiastic. Over the 4 series, I did become involved and loved it by the end, but this....well. I keep saying I will give it until the next episode but tbh I'm rapidly losing interest.

True to form I will give it to the next episode which looks interesting, but if that doesn't blow me away I'm going to give up I think. So much is re-hashed, the whole alien species coming to earth to raise young/save species. It's just, well I dunno, theres no complexity or drama,or interest.

The whole cracks thing is shoehorned in at every opportunity with no subtlety at all. Maybe there will be a mega timey wimey pay-off in the finale. So fecking what, the whole series is not just a lead up to the finale. Tbqh I would actually be pissed off with a timey wimey complicated finale. We have already had the darkness is coming/stars going out type thing. The subtle clues to the overall arc are good, but they can't be the only interesting things about episodes. Don't even get me started on (some of) the pathetic humour. Especially, the "you talking about my Mum" line grrr.

CoinOperatedGirl · 09/05/2010 01:29

Plus, I can't really remember anything previous threads, but I'm pretty sure they moved much faster than this one. Seems like there is nothing much to discuss .

aloevera · 09/05/2010 15:20

Ok, I watched it again and I think the dr was particularly shouty ("go back to the Tardis" etc) because what's-her-name's-dad had just killed himself to blow up the girls. And it brought home what Rory had said about people being a danger to themselves when he's around.

COG - think it is feeling very familiar with the species who need a new home darkness/silence is coming, stuff. I'm hoping that it will take a new direction with it all, especially because they seem to have let so much out the bag so early in the series.

Completely agree with everyone who hated the spire bit. Really naff ending. But I did like the machine in the globe bit. Very lovely clockworky thing.

aloevera · 09/05/2010 15:25

Also, when the camera zoomed in on the tardis keyhole did it have a tiny crack in it, shining with light. Or am I just seeing them everywhere now??

And, Amy opened the door. What key did she use? Does she have her own now?

Idontknowhowtohelpher · 09/05/2010 15:41

why was what's-her-name's-dad wearing Rory's tshirt?
what was going to happen to the 10,000 "husbands" once their prospective wives had gone?
Didn't any Venetians ever fall in the water and get eaten?
and to echo OhYouBadBadKitten - why would the doctor just leave once he's noticed the silence?

I did like the jumping out of the wrong cake again joke, though.

whoopstheregoesmymerkin · 09/05/2010 15:52

Well I liked it, made me laugh a lot and I thought MS finally made the part his own.
What ser names dad swapped clothes with Rory so he could look like a gondelier. And it was comedy value.
I am loving the whole steam punk thing too, brass goggles, clockworky ray blaster. Fab.

RustyBear · 09/05/2010 16:33

If the Doctor can "see the turn of the universe" as Tim Latimer said, he was probably aware that the silence wasn't just local to Venice.

JackieNo · 09/05/2010 18:39

FInally worked out that the guy who played Francesco, fish lady's son, was Alex Price, who not only does the voice over for Doctor Who Confidential, but was also Gilbert in the Being Human (grumpy ghost from the 80s who liked the Smiths). I knew I knew him from somewhere, but couldn't work out why.

KayHarker · 09/05/2010 21:54

Are we having Gilbert fun yet?

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 10/05/2010 00:14

There were bit plot holes in that (in addition to those listed, she'd taken off the perceptual filter before going into the water, so how come she still looked human?) although some clever ideas too. I loved Matt Smith's delivery of the stag party dialogue.

The big build up in the spire scene then just having to flip a switch was a nice idea (subverting expectations) but doesn't work as the big episode climax -- you could do it elsewhere in an episode but not there.

I think Isabella's dad was wearing Rory's t-shirt because he and Rory had swapped clothes for Rory's undercover delivering Amy to the school. Rory is still wearing the Venetian clothes at that point and I don't think he'd had a chance to get them from anyone except Guido.

I thought it was fairly clear that he was shouting at Amy to get her safely back to the TARDIS after Rory had criticised him for making her put herself in danger all the time.

Aitch · 10/05/2010 01:43

she really fiddled with the filter though, perhaps she was extending its signal? tbh i don't think that the prod co doesn't think of this stuff.

badkitty · 10/05/2010 09:34

Late joiner to thread but just having to post as watched Saturday's episode last night (Sky plus) and AMY IS SO IRRITATING SHE MAKES ME WANT TO SCREAM. I don't think I can stand much more of her stupid pouty poutyness.

Just had to get it off my chest. Come back Donna, all is forgiven.

Still DH thinks she's great - I suspect they are going for the male vote!

Nymphadora · 10/05/2010 09:36

The perception filter wasnt working properly as the Dr had sonic-ed it.

I thought he shouted at AMy cos of Rory and also to encourage her to actually stop putting herself in danger (Anyone else think she is a bit of a Daphne?)

Arcadie · 10/05/2010 14:02

I think , having watched a few Dr Who Confidentials, that Amy Pond as a character is still far less irritating than Karen Gillan in RL. But my 4 yr old fancies her so that's all that matters....

KayHarker · 10/05/2010 14:21

Karen Gillen is quite annoying, that's true.

OP posts:
ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 10/05/2010 14:25

I don't know... I think she's just very young.

I like Amy Pond, as a character. I think she'd be bloody annoying if you knew her in RL, but I think she works within the scope of Doctor Who and plays off Eleven nicely.

The rest of you are just Philistines...
