OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 08/07/2009 22:16

oh missed this thread, it's rather good isn't it? although henry winkler caused me to miss much of ep 1.

Katisha · 08/07/2009 22:22

I still think it is fatally flawed by the presence of the work experience girl at the very centre of it all. Even the excuse about the implied affair was a bit feeble IMO...

sphil · 08/07/2009 22:25

I ignored DS1 coming down from bed last night to tell me that DS2 was climbing on his bookshelves . Bad bad mummy.

Didn't think tonight's was quite as good, though liked the vomiting (?) aliens.

UnquietDad · 08/07/2009 22:25

Seriously though - I wonder why they have asked for the children.

You'd think, given the powers they have demonstrated so far, they could just take them.

So maybe they don't want the children. It's scarier than that. They want the human race to make the choice.

EccentricaGallumbits · 08/07/2009 22:35

It's all gone far too soap opera. Secret agents who fight aliens really don' need family complications at all.
jack naked did make up for it a bit but although enjoyable this is nowhere near as good as the previous series.

Sugarmagnolia · 08/07/2009 22:36

Not really watched Torchwood before but I am loving this! Heard a rumour that the Dr might make an appearance before the week is out...

pigswithfludontfly · 08/07/2009 22:38

I taught little ds to randomly stand still in a zombie way and say "we are coming" last night when dh got home. I was ROFL.

I'm really enjoying this. Didn't see the first two series, were they as good?

UnquietDad · 08/07/2009 22:42

pigs - 1st two series were patchier.

I bet it's going to go all "Sophie's Choice" in the next 2 eps. Some people will be arguing we should let them have their 10% and even deciding who...

Katymac · 08/07/2009 22:47

Can I ask?

Is this before the end of the last Dr Who.....or after?

Katisha · 08/07/2009 22:47

Maybe we could fob them off with 10% of Mumsnetters?

UnquietDad · 08/07/2009 22:49

katymac - it's after. I assume. No evidence that it isn't.

EdwardBitMe · 08/07/2009 22:49

I bet there's a child lottery.

pigswithfludontfly · 08/07/2009 22:49

Ooh I could offer them more than 10% of the kids I know who I'd happily see carted off by aliens

UnquietDad · 08/07/2009 22:51

Over on the Doctor Who discussion forum they are arguing as to whether the 456 monster "mimicked" Frobisher at one point ("is there anything I can do to help?") or if that was just the voice-software of the Torchwood laptop coming in a bit late.

I think it was the latter, although it was a bit of a misleading directorial cut if so. Maybe the laptop software should have had a female voice to avoid any ambiguity...

UnquietDad · 08/07/2009 22:52

edwardbit me - you're on to something! RTD has been listening to the dinner-party chatter of his friends - it's all a big metaphor for school admissions!!...

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 08/07/2009 22:54

UD - I thought it mimicked Frobisher, but then none of them mentioned it so I thought I might be mistaken.

Sugar - where did that rumour come from? It would be SO good if he did show up

RustyBear · 08/07/2009 23:00

I think it must be after DW4... unless they do some rapid rebuilding of the Hub.

I notice the Doctor did get a brief mention today.

pigswithfludontfly · 08/07/2009 23:05

Can I please have the beginner's guide to the link between Doctor Who and this?

Katisha · 08/07/2009 23:10

After Queen Victoria met Dr Who (in an episode a few years back) she set up the Torchwood Institute to investigate extra-terrestrial goings-on. It has survived in various forms since then and kind of works alongside UNIT when it wants to.
It has popped up in various Dr Who episodes and then span (spinned?) off into its own series.
Every now and then someone will mention the Doctor but generally he seems to leave them to it.
Captain Jack was the doctor's assistant for quite a long time but I can't remember how he comes to be immortal.

RustyBear · 08/07/2009 23:12

Wikipedia has a summary here

UnquietDad · 08/07/2009 23:15

He is immortal because he sort of swallowed the Time Vortex, basically, thanks to Rose. He was exterminated in the final episode of Who Series 1, and came back to life - since then he can't die.

Katisha · 08/07/2009 23:15

Still doesn't explain how he came to be immortal - what happened?

RustyBear · 08/07/2009 23:16

This clip explains more about how Jack became immortal - and has some rather nice DT/JB moments....

pigswithfludontfly · 08/07/2009 23:20

Wow thanks....I didn't know all that. It works pretty well on a stand-alone basis doesn't it.

UnquietDad · 08/07/2009 23:21

Did anyone else think the final shot of the "Next Time" had the monster looking a bit elephantine?
